Because I?ve been battling colitis, I?ve switched to a gluten-free, wheat-free, milk-free, beef-free, corn-free, non-GMO, organic diet.? I was already avoiding some of these food ingredients for previously discovered sensitivities and intolerance, but now I?m a complete food hippy.? I decided I would clear out the top shelves of a particular cabinet and keep all my special food items in one place.? I moved my mom?s ?regular? food out and placed it in a different cupboard where I found some bottles of beer that had expired last year.? I had actually bought the beer approximately two years ago.? Obviously I?m not a big drinker, or it would have been gone a long time ago!? I told my mom that I was going to pour it down the drain.? She went into the old alarmist panic mode and started giving me one of her familiar speeches about food/drink which is past pull date.
Mom:? That?s still good!
Me: Uh, I don?t think so.? It?s probably kind of flat and stale.
Mom:? It?s not flat because the bottle?s never been opened.
Me:? Well, I?m not going to ever drink it and I know you aren?t going to.
Mom:? See if Debbie wants it.? I?ll bet she?d be glad to get it.
Me:? She?s not going to want it.
Mom:? I don?t see why not.
Me:? Because it?s old.
Mom:? Well, I think she will want it.
Mom left the room because she was getting ready to go drive over to see Stella and take her out for dinner.? After mom left the house, I sent Debbie an email.
Email to Debbie:?? I found something I wanted to throw out in the kitchen, but Mom insists that you will want it.? So to appease her, I will ask you.? Debbie, do you want some bottles of beer that expired in August 2010?
Debbie?s reply:? Hell no! Good grief!
Reply to Debbie:? Ha ha.? I knew you wouldn?t want it, but you know how Mom is ? relentless with her obsessions.? She went to see Stella, so I?m going to pour them down the drain and throw the bottles in the recycle while the coast is clear.
Debbie?s reply:? More hoarder mentality..
So I emptied all the old beer bottles down the drain and took them out to the recycle bin.
We go through this routine every time I find some old food or drink and make the mistake of mentioning it to her.? She freaks out, declaring how someone will want the particular item.? Then when she isn?t looking, I have to stealthily dispose of the item.? Now I remember why I used to just get rid of the food or drink when she wasn?t around without bothering to ask her.? It?s to avoid this tiresome routine with the complimentary dramatic freakout over the thought of something being thrown out.
