Brain Fitness Training Improves Memory in SeniorsWe all know that we need to exercise to improve our physical fitness, yet rarely do we think of the need to perform fitness training for our brain.

The subject becomes important as we age. Normal age-related memory decline affects more than half of all seniors, with those over 80 being the most vulnerable.

A new UCLA study has found that a memory fitness program offered to older adults in their senior living communities helped improve their ability to recognize and recall words, benefitting their verbal learning and retention.

Researchers found the program improved seniors? self-perceived memory, an important factor in maintaining a positive outlook on life while aging.

The average age of participants in the study was 81. It is not clear whether these improvements would be found in younger adults, as few brain fitness studies have been conducted on younger adults.

?It was exciting to see how much older adults participate in a memory fitness program and improve,? said study author Dr. Karen Miller. ?The study demonstrates that it?s never too late to learn new skills to enhance one?s life.?

As people get older, it takes longer to learn new information and to retrieve it, including names, dates, the location of household objects, meetings, and appointments, according to the study?s senior author, Dr. Gary Small, UCLA?s Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging and director of the UCLA Longevity Center.

The six-week, 12-session program was different from other cognitive training courses in that it offered not only memory-training techniques but also education about lifestyle factors that may impact memory ability and overall brain health.

As part of the curriculum, participants received health education on the value of a diet rich in antioxidants, the importance of daily physical exercise and stress reduction.

?Lifestyle and environmental factors may play a role in cognitive decline, so our program included education about healthy living in addition to memory-training techniques,? said Small.

The study involved 115 seniors living in two full-service continuing-care retirement communities in Maryland.

Participants lived in the ?independent? level of care in these communities and had memory complaints, but they had not been diagnosed with dementia and were not taking any medications for memory loss.

Half the participants were enrolled in the memory fitness program and received memory testing before beginning the program and after completion to assess improvement. The other half were placed on a waiting list for the program and acted as study controls.

Miller and Small developed a scripted curriculum for trainers (who possessed a health background), and they provided a companion workbook for participants.

The one-hour education sessions included content on how memory works; quick strategies for remembering names, faces and numbers; and training on basic memory tools such as linking ideas and creating visual images.

Trainers also discussed the role of a healthy lifestyle in protecting and maintaining memory.

Among the older adults attending the classes, the researchers found marked improvement in verbal memory, as well as improvements in how they perceived their memory, compared with the controls.

?The study suggests that the memory fitness program may be a cost-effective means of addressing some of the memory-related concerns of healthy older adults,? Parrish added.

The study is found in the September issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.

Researchers pursue new information from East Coast hurricane

While Hurricane Irene had officials along the East Coast preparing for mass evacuations, scientists at the Stroud Water Research Center and the University of Delaware were grabbing their best data collection tools and heading straight for the storm's path.

It was a rare opportunity for the scientists to learn more about climate change and water quality, as Irene threatened to be the biggest hurricane to hit the Northeastern United States since 1985.

Center scientist Anthony Aufdenkampe explains, "It rains on average once per week, or 15 percent of the year, but streams and rivers move most of their annual loads on those days.

"The bigger the storm, the greater the disproportionate load, so you might have a single 100-year storm event move 25 percent of the material for an entire decade," says Aufdenkampe.

"This is important because fresh waters and the carbon they transport play a major role in the global cycling of greenhouse gases."

Irene could reveal much about how soil erosion into rivers might eventually bury carbon and sequester it from acting as a greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.

That's a primary goal of the Christina River Basin Critical Zone Observatory (CRB-CZO), funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Stroud Water Research Center and University of Delaware scientists are affiliated with the CRB-CZO.

The CRB-CZO is at the forefront of scientific research on integrating how human effects on the hydrologic, mineral and carbon cycles might have feedbacks to climate change.

"One of the motivations for NSF Critical Zone Observatories such as the CRB-CZO is to obtain time-continuous observations that would document and help us understand infrequent events," says Jun Abrajano of NSF's Earth Sciences Division.

"Some of these events are extreme enough to have major cumulative effects on the overall processes and fluxes in watershed systems. The track and magnitude of Hurricane Irene may prove it to be such an event."

We're hypothesizing, says Aufdenkampe, "that big storms are a major player in determining what happens to the carbon in a leaf, for example.

"Does it go back into the atmosphere or does it get buried for decades, centuries, or millennia? That's the key to global warming and climate change."

Aufdenkampe and colleagues visited sites along White Clay Creek and Brandywine Creek to set up equipment to collect floodwaters throughout the storm.

And with innovative tools developed with relatively inexpensive open-source electronic hardware, the researchers didn't have to wait around.

Engineer Steve Hicks of the Stroud Water Research Center put together automatic water samplers that may be triggered remotely via cell phone. "By watching real-time sensor data streaming to the Internet, at precisely the right moment we fill the barrels of water we need for our analyses."

"Had a storm like this hit five or ten years ago, we wouldn't have been able to gather this type of data," says Aufdenkampe.

"But now with open-source hardware and software, anything's possible. We're only limited by our imagination."

Change management, however, seems better related to the macro level, as it describes planned major undertakings, such as a migration from one business or technical state to another, through a project or a program.

?It?s an extension to change control in that it should provide procedures and personnel to take care of project deliverables, to ensure that each is uniquely identifiable, protected from harm or loss, that only the most recent approved version is used and that any proposed changes to it are authorized, managed and recorded,? he said.

Expired food and drink ? a hot commodity ? You Might Need That ...

Because I?ve been battling colitis, I?ve switched to a gluten-free, wheat-free, milk-free, beef-free, corn-free, non-GMO, organic diet.? I was already avoiding some of these food ingredients for previously discovered sensitivities and intolerance, but now I?m a complete food hippy.? I decided I would clear out the top shelves of a particular cabinet and keep all my special food items in one place.? I moved my mom?s ?regular? food out and placed it in a different cupboard where I found some bottles of beer that had expired last year.? I had actually bought the beer approximately two years ago.? Obviously I?m not a big drinker, or it would have been gone a long time ago!? I told my mom that I was going to pour it down the drain.? She went into the old alarmist panic mode and started giving me one of her familiar speeches about food/drink which is past pull date.

Mom:? That?s still good!

Me: Uh, I don?t think so.? It?s probably kind of flat and stale.

Mom:? It?s not flat because the bottle?s never been opened.

Me:? Well, I?m not going to ever drink it and I know you aren?t going to.

Mom:? See if Debbie wants it.? I?ll bet she?d be glad to get it.

Me:? She?s not going to want it.

Mom:? I don?t see why not.

Me:? Because it?s old.

Mom:? Well, I think she will want it.

Mom left the room because she was getting ready to go drive over to see Stella and take her out for dinner.? After mom left the house, I sent Debbie an email.

Email to Debbie:?? I found something I wanted to throw out in the kitchen, but Mom insists that you will want it.? So to appease her, I will ask you.? Debbie, do you want some bottles of beer that expired in August 2010?

Debbie?s reply:? Hell no! Good grief!

Reply to Debbie:? Ha ha.? I knew you wouldn?t want it, but you know how Mom is ? relentless with her obsessions.? She went to see Stella, so I?m going to pour them down the drain and throw the bottles in the recycle while the coast is clear.

Debbie?s reply:? More hoarder mentality..

So I emptied all the old beer bottles down the drain and took them out to the recycle bin.

We go through this routine every time I find some old food or drink and make the mistake of mentioning it to her.? She freaks out, declaring how someone will want the particular item.? Then when she isn?t looking, I have to stealthily dispose of the item.? Now I remember why I used to just get rid of the food or drink when she wasn?t around without bothering to ask her.? It?s to avoid this tiresome routine with the complimentary dramatic freakout over the thought of something being thrown out.

SAN FRANCISCO ? It's easy to forget now, but Apple's magnetism was once confined to a cult-like following of geeks seduced by the elegance and simplicity of the company's computers.

Over the past decade, though, Apple has emerged as a trendsetter and a wealth-making machine ? the rare company that appeals to the cool cats hanging out in hip cafes and the fat cats looking to make another killing on Wall Street.

In the process, Apple has left an indelible mark that extends far beyond that first personal computer Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak introduced 35 years ago. Since then, Apple has transformed the music, retailing, marketing and cellphone industries. Now, it's engineering yet another evolution in computing with the increasingly popular iPad tablet.

Those achievements have endeared Apple to the masses, turning its product announcements into the technology industry's latter-day version of a Beatles concert and turning its familiar logo into an emblem of exquisite taste.

Part visionary, showman and uncompromising taskmaster, Jobs assembled a team that had an incredible knack for anticipating consumer trends and popularizing them by designing devices that were easy ? and delightful ? to use. It seemed as if the second coming of Walt Disney and the rest of the "imagineers" who built Disneyland during the mid-1950s had come to Silicon Valley to lead the way into the 21st century.

In the past decade, the iPod, iPhone and iPad have transformed society, enabling people to bring along their favorite music, books, videos and websites almost everywhere they go. In the process they inspired countless imitators and ensured that Jobs, who resigned Wednesday, will be remembered as one of the most successful CEOs in American history.

None of it would have happened if Jobs hadn't returned to Apple in 1997 after being pushed out of the company in the mid-1980s by John Sculley, a CEO that Jobs had lured away from Pepsico Inc. by asking, "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?"

Jobs' wizardry rescued a company on the precipice of bankruptcy and elevated it into the second most valuable business in America. Packers use late flurry to edge Colts 24-21 (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Graham Harrell's big finish ruined Curtis Painter's timely flourish.

Then Painter struck back.

(AP) ? Thousands of evacuees began returning home early Thursday after fire crews allowed a burning propane rail tanker to burn itself out, ending the threat of a major explosion, authorities said.

The raging blaze from the tanker burned out before midnight, but then crews reignited it to allow vapors caught in the tank to also burn away, Lincoln Fire Chief Dave Whitt said.

But he told The Associated Press that the threat of a major explosion no longer existed and an evacuation order for Lincoln was lifted around midnight.

Between 4,000 and 5,000 homes in the northern California city of 40,000 people had been evacuated, and more than 6,000 students missed their first days of classes after the tanker caught fire Tuesday.

"Most of them are en route (home) or are there," he said.

Whitt said the tanker was being filled with water and a small amount of foam. He expected the vapor fire to burn out before dawn.

After preparing to undertake a bold maneuver to drain the propane from the burning car, Whitt said crews opted instead to let the fire burn itself out after determining the car held less propane than previously thought.

"They saw the flames on top get lazier and lazier," he said. "They said, 'you know what, this may be out of product.' Sure enough that's exactly what happened."

Officials had worked throughout the day Wednesday in trying to head off the potential failure of the 29,000-gallon tank. Whitt said crews were concerned at the time that a buildup of heat could lead to an explosion that could produce a fireball several hundred yards wide.

An explosion also could throw metal shards up to a mile away. Officials on Tuesday ordered mandatory evacuations within a one-mile radius.

It was unclear how the tanker caught fire in the Northern Propane Energy yard in Lincoln, about 30 miles northeast of the state capital. It was surrounded by trucks, other rail cars and storage tanks containing at least 170,000 gallons of additional propane that Whitt said were at risk as the fire burned. A gas pipeline also runs through the area.

One worker at the rail yard was injured in the initial fire and suffered flash burns but has been released from a hospital.

A similar fire in 1973 in the Arizona town of Kingman killed 11 firefighters and a gas company worker when a rail car carrying a propane tank exploded. The resulting fireball injured more than 100 others and showered the surrounding area with shrapnel. The propane tanker flew a quarter of a mile and its impact dug a crater 10 feet deep.

Whitt, who was the first to respond to the fire, said crews were successful in keeping the tanker cool since it caught fire Tuesday.

"If we didn't put water on tank, and protect integrity of tank, outcome would not have been as positive," he said.

He added the crews used up to 5,000 gallons of water per minute to keep the tank cool.

Earlier, the American Red Cross said 270 people had taken shelter in three evacuation centers.

Leslie Reyes and her husband, a city maintenance worker, spent the night in their van outside the Lincoln Community Center, one of the three shelters. Her oldest son slept outside next to the van while three other children were placed with family and friends.

She said they chose to stay outside because they were not allowed to bring in their 2 1/2-year-old toy rat terrier.

Reyes, 35, said she got a call at home Tuesday from her husband to evacuate. A short time later, an officer came to evacuate their street.

"At that point, I told my kids grab your memorables, pictures, things that are near and dear to your heart," Reyes said.

She said she appreciates the precaution despite the inconvenience. Reyes said she plans to relocate her family to her mother's in Antelope, about 15 miles away.

"Of course I would rather go home but it's better to be safe," Reyes said.

Roza Calderon, who lives with her family about a block away from the propane yard where the tanker was burning, described flames as high as utility lines before she evacuated.

"It was a big flame. It was getting worse," she said.

The 26-year-old accountant said she was staying with her husband, daughter and mother at a hotel in Sacramento.
