You should definitely take some time doing niche research before you decide to take the leap and start a site about that particular niche. Using forums is not the be-all-end-all when it comes to niche research as you should definitely use more than just forums before you decide to start a site, but they can give you some great information on the niche. Plus it?s really easy to find what you are looking for.
Let?s use the ?Home Improvement? niche for an example. All you would have to do is go to Google and search for home improvement forums.

Just from visiting the first result in Google you can find plenty of sub niches to narrow down your niche even more. Here are just some of the sub niches you can think about pursuing:

Let?s say that you decide that you want to look at starting a niche site in the painting niche of home improvement. You can then click on that folder in the forum to get more information on what people are exactly looking for when it comes to painting.

As you can see just from the first few threads in this forum, you can find several different things people are looking for or asking questions about. Being that this folder has a lot of posts on it and seems to be pretty active you can pretty much assume that people are searching about information about painting. After just taking a quick glance at the forum thread titles, here are just some of the topics you could write about for a niche site in painting:

- Tips for painting steel siding
- How to paint bathroom walls
- Best paint for bathroom walls
- How to stain cedar siding
- Pros and Cons of Sherwin Williams Duration Paint (or a review on the product)
- Ideas for painting headboards

These are just a few different topics that you can get from the first page listings of threads on this forum alone. There are 245 pages of threads for painting in this forum alone!
What to Do Now
Once you have done some research on your niche you can start coming up with topics to write about (be sure you still do keyword research before you start writing though) and make a spreadsheet of topics. You may decide that your sub niche is still too broad and come up with an even more narrowed down niche. For example, with painting, you could always narrow that down to exterior painting or interior painting or go even further and do painting bathrooms or painting/staining furniture. It all depends on how broad of a niche you want your site to be and remember you can always expand your site later if your site takes off.
Once you have your topics and you have decided that there is money to be made in the niche, you should start doing keyword research and finding keywords that you can rank your site for. Be sure that you not only find main keywords but you look for long tail keywords as well.
