Family Fun With a New Snowman

Winter time can be very beautiful, the white snow, the crisp air, and for a month, Christmas decorations. These are things that adults and parents can enjoy. In the case of children however, the situation is quite different. Snowball fights, igloos, snow angles, and many other wet and dirty activities. I say dirty because playing in the snow and trailing water through the house is a mom's nightmare!

But this last year things got out of hand for me as a parent. It snowed so much and so often that there were many school cancellations. For my kids this meant euphoria, but for me it meant a lot of work and activities the left me as exhausted as the wrinkled gloves strewn about the house. I just couldn't handle all the time the kids spent at home and not in school, and ran out of ideas of how to keep them busy.

Long story short, I went out with my husband a few of his friends and got into conversation about the trouble I was having with the kids being home all the time. It was an excellent conversation. I got to chew someone's ear off who would tolerate it as opposed to my husband who has heard me run through the riot act a hundred times already. The good news is that there is a point to all of this. This friend of my husband's just so happens to run a online clothing store accessories store and gave me a good idea. He told me to come by the warehouse and pick up some mannequins. The idea was bring them home and have a contest with the children.

This is exactly what I did the next day. I kept the mannequins in the basement until the next time the children go off from school, which was only a week later. I gathered them in the living room and told them about a contest that they would be having. Each kid would have a mannequin and the contest was to take there mannequin outside and cover it in snow. Then there job would be to outfit the snow man (of snow women) in the most creative way that they could imagine.

It worked wonders! They spent the whole day outside with the mannequins and worked on their project. It was a life saver. The next day after school there friends came over and they had another competition, it was an activity that really got me through the winter and gave me the time to get to the things I needed to do around the house. It was a lifesaver. Try it with your kids and be rescued!
