If there are specific materials you would like me to work on or something that would help you please let me know. The contact information is listed below. ?I'd be more than happy to put something together for you. Another aspect of this is if you've adopted an older child (10 - 16 years old) and need something to help them go from Russian to English. The same worksheets I'm going to be working on can be edited to move from Russian to English. They'll see the Russian word and it will have the English word and a pronunciation guide in Russian to help them. I know transitioning to America and English as an older child can be difficult. Anything I can do to help I'm more than willing to do.
As a stay at home Mother I have this kind of time now that I have one child in school and the other one being home schooled. Once both girls are in school next year I'll have a lot more time and will be able to devote more time to working on these. I'll be able to add to the initial ones so that kids can work on temperatures (cold vs. hot), names of parts of the body (nose, eyes, hair, mouth, ears, fingers, toes etc).
The informational sheet with websites will include a number of Russian bookstores here in the US in New York, Washington DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco that carry a number of children's books including children's fairy tales, stories on CD or DVD, Disney videos in Russian, Sesame Street DVD's in Russian and more. This will also include some alphabet books, Russian writing books, basic Russian math books and more. There are some basic textbooks available here in the US to help children learn to write the Russian alphabet and for help with vocabulary and more. I'll be providing websites for all of these locations as I compile them and will be expanding on it as I go.
Here is the contact information for anyone interested in teaching their children Russian, or in maintaining their adopted child's current Russian language. Or, for soon to be or current adoptive parents who would like to learn some Russian before travelling to Russia so they can communicate with their adopted child. I know just how helpful this can be and how much smoother our final trip was due to the fact that I could communicate for the most part with our daughter.
I'll admit, I did have a friend on?standby?via Skype who is a Russian American and a translator just in case of an emergency. I contacted her once when we were in Moscow. Our daughter was hysterical, it was the middle of the night Moscow time and I needed to know (in Russian) what she wanted. Turns out she wanted a drink (I knew the words for water, juice, milk etc, I just didn't know the specific word for drink or the verb To Drink). It only took a couple minutes and the entire situation was resolved. She had woken up, was thirsty and wanted a drink. Within minutes she was back in bed. A simple situation like this can turn into a complete meltdown if the child is hysterical, crying, upset etc and can take hours to resolve if you don't understand what they're saying. Learning some basic Russian language can solve this situation in minutes. Less stress on you and less stress on your child. It also assist in bonding. I'll also be recommending CD's of Russian?lullaby?music that you can put on while rocking your child or holding your child. This will facilitate bonding as well. I know there is some on Amazon, but some of the better Russian lullaby music (and what your child may have been exposed to in Russia) is probably not available on Amazon. There are some websites that are primarily in Russian (with a link that you can click on to translate into English). They have a much better selection and a lot of options that are typically only available while you are in Russia.
I will also be providing a number of links to websites where you can find typical Russian toys, Christmas ornaments and more. These will be perfect for Birthdays, Christmas, Baptisms, 1st Communions, 16th Birthday, High School or College Graduation etc.
If any of this sounds like something you would be interested in, email { Russian For Kids (at) Hotmail (dot) com }.
