How to unbalance nothingness

Friday, October 28, 2011

Nothingness ? this is the research subject-matter of a team of theoretical physicists from the Universities Jena (Germany) and Graz (Austria). "The ground state of our world can't be described by the absence of all matter," Professor Dr. Holger Gies from the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and the Helmholtz-Institute Jena explains. "This so-called quantum vacuum rather turns out to be a complex state of constantly fluctuating quantum fields with physical properties."

The world-wide community of physicists is hoping to be able to witness a particularly spectacular characteristic in a few years' time: the spontaneous decay of the vacuum into pairs of particles of matter and antimatter in super strong electric fields. Due to the new research results of the Austro-German team of physicists, this goal came a few steps closer.

Although first theoretical consideration concerning the spontaneous decay of the vacuum dates back to the year 1931, its comprehensive understanding is still in its infancy. ?A great challenge in modern theoretical physics is the description of quantum fields out of equilibrium," Professor Gies explains. "We are facing this problem in phase transitions in the early Universe as well as in many experiments in solid state physics." Therefore experimental proof of the vacuum decay ? as it might be delivered by high intensity lasers in the near future ? will provide knowledge exceeding this particular field.

The scientists from Graz and Jena now succeeded calculating the time evolution of the vacuum decay in detail. "Even we were surprised by the results," Professor Gies confesses. According to the results particles of matter and antimatter behave in a novel self-focusing way and therefore the possibility of discovering them is higher than expected. "The quantum vacuum has already had some surprises in store," says the Heisenberg-Professor for Theoretical Physics. "To unbalance this nothingness could develop into a new prolific field of research."

Back in April, Lady Gaga and the world of Indian pop culture kicked off their love affair when Indian composers Salim-Sulaiman produced a remix of Gaga's smash "Born This Way." And Gaga kept the fire burning during a recent trek to the country.

On Sunday night at a Formula One afterparty in Greater Noida, Gaga performed a Bollywood version of her Born This Way single "Marry the Night," according to Aceshowbiz.com.

"I feel like I've waited a long time to come here. And I feel very grateful," she told the excited crowd at the party. "For the first time ever, I'm going to sing 'Marry the Night.' "

Gaga sat at a piano and played a slowed-down version of the song, accompanied by a sitar. Before the show, in a chat with NDTV in New Delhi, Gaga described it as "a performance that is unique and specific just for India."

In addition to performing the song live for the first time, she had another treat for her Indian fans, revealing for the first time some new details about her video for the "Marry the Night."

"Well, I can share exclusively with you that I directed this video myself. So this is my first directorial debut," she told NDTV. Until now, she has co-directed with her Haus of Gaga and her creative director Laurieann Gibson.

"But it has been a wonderful experience. I worked alongside director of photography Darius Khondji, who is an absolutely amazing DP, and I worked with Gideon Ponte, who is an incredible art director," she explained. "So I'm looking forward to sharing this autobiographical video with the world. I'm very excited. It's my favorite song on the album."

As for what's next for Gaga and India, she tweeted out several photos of herself around town, with the message, "Screw Hollywood. It's all about Bollywood."

During her interview, she shared that she hasn't ruled out some Bollywood-themed projects, explaining, "There's nothing in the works right now, but I love the culture here and I love Bollywood so who knows?"

10 great works of engineering genius

Those monuments you?ve crossed the planet to see ? they?re big, but are they clever? Well, yes, actually they are. These 10 works of engineering genius span the centuries and are guaranteed to boggle the traveler?s brain and leave mouths agape.

1. Great Pyramid of Khufu, Giza, Egypt
Bigger might not be better, but clearly nobody told Pharaoh Khufu that before he built his pyramid in 2570 BC. More than 2 million limestone blocks, each weighing upwards of 2 tons, were hefted to create a beast of a building some 480 feet high ? it remained the world?s tallest structure for 4,000 years. But never mind the size: feel the quality. Not only was the design supremely accurate ? each 755-foot-long side varies by mere inches ? the subtleties of its construction are exceptional: the internal shafts point towards important constellations, for example, and it aligns with true north. Oh, and it looks phenomenal.

The pyramids are open daily; two are usually open to the public. Arrive before 8 am for the best chance of tickets.

2. Aya Sofya, Istanbul, Turkey
No, it doesn?t honor some saintly Sophia ? this astonishing construction was named for divine wisdom (sophos in Greek). The name is apt, because the incredible beauty of this ancient building, created by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in AD 537, was possible only thanks to the cunning of the innovative architects who perched its vast, seemingly floating 98-foot dome on pendentives and hidden pillars. Converted to a mosque after the Ottoman invasion of 1453, Aya Sofya is now a secular monument ? but when shafts of sunlight strike the gold mosaics of its cavernous interior, you?ll be forgiven for experiencing a religious moment.

The Aya Sofya is closed on Mondays; come the rest of the week to fully enjoy the wonder of this historic masterpiece.

3. Indian railways
A glance at the numbers gives a sense of what has been achieved since the first train chugged out of Mumbai on the 20 miles to Thane in 1853; today, over 40,000 miles of track carries 18 million passengers daily. But that?s skimming the surface; the real engineering prowess is demonstrated in the small details. For example, in 1874, Major Stanton constructed an 55-mile section ? from initial survey to loco commissioning ? in a mere 65 days. Such feats were repeated throughout the country and now you can ride on comfortable broad-gauge tracks or switchback up to Himalayan hill stations on toy trains (small mountain trains).

IndRail passes, enabling prebooking of seats and berths, are valid from half-day to 90-day options in three classes.

4. Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain
Is it a ship? A flower? A fish? Frank Gehry?s vision for this glimmering creation was unique. Call it deconstructivism or, as did King Juan Carlos, simply "the best building of the 20th century;" either way, it continues to astonish. Its flowing, organic lines required a ground-breaking 3-D computer-aided design program, which enabled 60 tons of titanium to form sweeping sheets just a half-millimeter thick and specially strengthened glass to curve smoothly around the limestone carapace. Since it opened in 1997, the museum has hosted a dazzling array of works by the likes of Warhol, Rothko and Koons, but it?s the building itself that has kick-started Bilbao?s renaissance.

Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is open Tuesday to Sunday year-round, and Mondays in July and August.

5. Great Wall of China
Genghis Khan reportedly said: "The strength of a wall depends on the courage of those who defend it." True, but it helps if your wall is really big. The original Great Wall was constructed by the 3rd-century Qin dynasty, which coerced hundreds of thousands of workers into hefting an estimated 235 million cubic yards of rocks and mud. The later effort by the Ming dynasty (14th?17th centuries) incorporated 78 million cubic yards of stone and bricks. Overall, the various walls spanned almost 2000 years of construction, cost millions of lives and stretched more than 4000 miles. No, you can?t see it from the moon but, yes, it is jaw-droppingly impressive.

The sections nearest Beijing tend to be crowded and busy with hawkers; head to S?m?t?i or J?nsh?nl?ng for a less-touristy experience.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Munching bugs: Tasty, popular and eco-smart

Forget ?Fear Factor? and stories of survival. Insects are gaining some tasty notoriety ? getting served at fine restaurants and fairs and museums around the country.

    2. Book a hotel room with a boo!
    3. 4 spooky museum exhibits
    4. Jack the cat 'not out of the woods yet'
    5. Traveler gets 'personal' note on TSA card

6. Millau Viaduct, France
Concrete: 206,000 tons; steel decking: 36,000 tons ? oooh, don?t stop, you saucy devil! No, really, it is exciting: Sir Norman Foster?s viaduct is an example of the practical ? prosaic, even ? that is also delicately beautiful. Challenged to build a bridge to span the Gorges du Tarn in southern France, engineers created a record-busting feat of technology: 8070 feet long, it incorporates the world?s highest pylons, highest mast and highest road deck. But the reason drivers (and tourists) stop and gawp ? and they do ? is the sense of lightness and fragility something so huge conveys.

The bridge toll is from ?5.02 (US$6.86) but admission to the visitor center, open daily, is free.

7. Lalibela, Ethiopia
A while back, there was a bit of a fad for carving buildings out of rock ? think Egypt?s Abu Simbel, Jordan?s Petra, India?s Ellora. But Lalibela takes some topping, not least because the rock-hewn churches are still very much active. Come at Timkat (Epiphany; 19 January) for bustling pilgrims, chanting, incense swirling and a peek at the tabots (holy books). Scores of thousands of workers ? some of them heavenly, according to local legend ? labored from the 12th century to dig Lalibela?s 11 churches vertically from the ground. Rough-edged they?re not, though; their exquisite carvings and decorations make them visual treats.

Lalibela?s churches are open daily. To avoid catching fleas from their carpets, try dusting your socks with flea powder.

8. Falkirk Wheel, Scotland
Boats: great for floating, not so hot going downhill. As for going up ? rubbish. If you?re a boat, and you want to head uphill, say, between Scotland?s Forth and Clyde Canal and the 115-foot-higher Union Canal, what you need is either a series of locks stretching over a mile, or a vast steel contraption that rotates a pair of enormous, water-filled gondolas. Each gondola on the Falkirk Wheel carries boats like you on their up or down journeys. It took 1200 tons of steel, more than 15,000 bolts and a really, really big crane to put the wheel together in 2001.

Hour-long boat trips, including lifts up and down, operate daily and cost ?7.95 (US$12.40) for adults.

9. Yaxchil?n, Yucat?n, Mexico
Maya sites are fascinating ? ball courts, pyramids, carved frescoes ? and Yaxchil?n is cooler than most, perched dramatically above a jungle-clad loop of the R?o Usumacinta. A wealthy city during its heyday (AD 680?800), Yaxchil?n has exceptional and intricately carved facades and roof combs, but arguably the most interesting feature isn?t even there anymore: a suspension bridge whose 207-foot central span was the world?s longest for 700 years. The existence of the bridge, posited in the mid-1990s as a result of archaeological research and computer modeling, is still debated, but the idea certainly adds to the allure of one of the Americas? most intriguing ancient sites.

Yaxchil?n isn?t accessible by road or rail; hire a motorboat for the 45-minute journey from Frontera Corozal.

10. Burj Khalifa, United Arab Emirates
OK, so this one really is all about the size: the world?s tallest building isn?t huge ? it?s simply colossal. In the way Gulf states seem to do things (creating vast artificial islands in the shapes of trees, creating the world?s first seven-star hotel, etc), Burj Khalifa didn?t just sneak past the previous incumbent, it roared ahead. Taiwan?s former champion tower, Taipei 101, is a piddling 1667 feet, while Burj Khalifa is a whopping 2716 feet. It?s so high the air temperature at the top is a full 10 degrees Fahrenheit lower than at its base.

For a closer look, the well-heeled can book a suite at the Armani Hotel, which will occupy the lower 37 floors of Burj Khalifa.

49ers beat Browns 20-10 for 5th straight win (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Frank Gore charged up the middle with his signature burst for a 2-yard gain, taking another step forward in franchise history.

Gore got that coveted new contract and is playing like his old dominant self. Forget the hip injury that ended his season last November. He's a new man making his case for a third Pro Bowl and pushing his team toward its first playoff berth in nine years.

Gore ran for both 125-plus yards and a touchdown in a fourth straight game, Michael Crabtree made his first TD reception of the season, and the San Francisco 49ers beat the Cleveland Browns 20-10 on Sunday.

Alex Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 177 yards, leading the first-place 49ers (6-1) to their fifth consecutive victory since an overtime loss to the Cowboys in Week 2.

For Colt McCoy and the Browns, it's 0-for the Bay Area. They lost two weeks ago in Oakland, then flopped across San Francisco Bay at Candlestick Park.

No handshake flap this time for Jim Harbaugh, either. And no post-bye letdown for his 49ers ? even if it was far from flashy.

This marked Harbaugh's first game since his seconds-long greeting and firm backslap of Lions coach Jim Schwartz following San Francisco's 25-19 comeback win at Detroit two weeks ago.

Harbaugh says he practiced during the bye week by high-fiving with his toddler daughter. He was polite to fellow first-year coach Pat Shurmur when they met at midfield.

The 49ers ? who were made aware by Harbaugh this week that teams were 3-9 after their byes coming into Sunday ? are off to their first 6-1 start since 1998 in the days of greats Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens and Steve Young.

Cleveland's D'Qwell Jackson committed a costly facemask penalty against Gore that would have stopped San Francisco on third down 2 yards short in the waning minutes. David Akers sealed it with his second field goal of the day, a 26-yarder.

Gore already had 103 yards on 19 carries by halftime, then got the other 7 yards he needed to pass Roger Craig and move into second place on the franchise rushing list with 7,089. Gore wound up with 134 yards on a season-high 31 carries.

San Francisco has a five-game winning streak for the first time since 2001 and wrapped up its first unbeaten October since 1997.

The next big task will be ending an eight-year stretch of frustration in which the team hasn't had a winning season or made the playoffs. The Niners began the day with a comfortable three-game cushion in the division ? nicknamed the NFC Worst last season, when Seattle won with a 7-9 record.

Harbaugh's big brother, John, helped the sibling cause by rallying to beat Arizona 30-27 earlier Sunday.

The banged-up Browns (3-4) improved on special teams but went without their top two running backs. Peyton Hillis didn't play for the second straight game because of a hamstring injury and Cleveland then lost Montario Hardesty to a calf injury in the first half.

McCoy and Co. managed only Phil Dawson's 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half before Josh Cribbs' 45-yard TD catch with 6:17 to play.

After last week's lackluster 6-3 win over the Seahawks, it didn't get much better for the Browns. They failed to reach the end zone for seven quarters before Cribbs scored.

McCoy accounted for four of Cleveland's five fumbles, one of which was lost and helped set up Gore's early TD run.

McCoy lost the ball on the second play from scrimmage after he was stripped by Ahmad Brooks. Isaac Sopoaga recovered at the Cleveland 20. Gore ran 4 yards for the first points. Gore rushed for a touchdown in his fourth straight game, the first time in his career he's done so.

McCoy was sacked four more times after five last week by the Seahawks.

San Francisco's lopsided first half told the tale far before the clock finally wound down on a crystal-clear, unseasonably warm fall day.

First downs: 15-6. Total yards: 253-93. Time of possession: 18:58-11:02. Rushing yards: 145-25.

Crabtree caught a 2-yard pass to put the Niners ahead 17-0 just before halftime. Dashon Goldson made his first interception of 2011 in the end zone in the third quarter.

Left tackle Joe Staley even was in on the action, catching a 17-yard pass from Smith for a first down midway through the first quarter for his first career reception. He jumped up in celebration and signaled the first down by emphatically pointing down field with both hands. Sopoaga had an 18-yard reception late against the Browns' fourth-ranked defense.

49ers wideout Braylon Edwards returned against his former club in his first action since right knee surgery after getting hurt against the Cowboys. He had four catches.

Film review: The Debt

The Debt

PAYING DUES: Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington and Marton Csokas as Mossad agents in The Debt.

The writers of Kick Ass have created an altogether more mature offering in the form of this historical spy thriller, no doubt influenced by their director, John Madden (best known for Shakespeare in Love and Mrs Brown).

Israel, 1966: three young Mossad agents return from a mission to capture and bring to justice a Nazi war criminal. Heralded as heroes for the next three decades, the truth about their time in Berlin comes back to haunt them in later life, causing upset and a requirement for loose ends to be tied up.

Flitting back and forth between past and present, the strong cast includes Helen Mirren and the ubiquitous Tom Wilkinson, with shining starlet Jessica Chastain (Tree of Life and The Help) and New Zealand's Marton Csokas as their younger selves. Only occasionally do the Israeli accents belie the Antipodean within (Avatar's Sam Worthington has a pivotal role, though it's weakly played) but it's not hard to suspend your disbelief, and many of the set pieces manage to evoke (admittedly superior) counterparts like Munich. Chastain is particularly good, the scenes in which she inveigles her way into the medical practice of the Nazi-turned-gynaecologist serving to create incredible tension, and revulsion at what she must go through in the interests of duty. As the hunted doctor, Jesper Christensen (the shadowy Mr White in the recent James Bond movies) is manipulatively excellent.

Harking back to the days of old-fashioned spy thrillers, the plot is gripping and revelations unexpected. The aforementioned loose ends may be conveniently tied by the end, but the exercise itself shows passion and commitment to the cause.

China key suspect in U.S. satellite hacks

At least two U.S. environment-monitoring satellites were interfered with four or more times in 2007 and 2008 via a ground station in Norway, and China's military is a prime suspect, a draft report to Congress said.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which reported the interference, said the events had not actually been traced to China. It said it was citing them "because the techniques appear consistent with authoritative Chinese military writings" that have advocated disabling satellite control facilities in any conflict.

Pinpointing responsibility for a cyberattack can be extremely difficult. Hackers typically mask their tracks by routing intrusions through computers on multiple continents and may make an attack appear to come from a third country.

The commission said its account was based largely on a May 12 U.S. Air Force briefing for the 12-member commission, which was set up by Congress in 2000 to report on U.S.-China trade's national security implications. Its final 2011 report is due to be sent to lawmakers on November 16.

The satellites cited in the report are used for climate and terrain monitoring by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey.

A Landsat-7 earth observation satellite, built by NASA for the USGS, experienced 12 or more minutes of interference in October 2007 and July 2008, the report said.

A NASA-managed Terra AM-1 earth observation satellite was similarly interfered with for two minutes or more on June 20, 2008, and at least nine minutes on October 22, 2008, it said.

Trent Perrotto, a NASA spokesman, confirmed that NASA had spotted two "suspicious events" with its Terra spacecraft in the summer and fall of 2008, but said no commands were successfully sent to the satellite and no data was captured.

NASA notified the Department of Defense, which is responsible for investigating any attempted interference with satellite operations, Perrotto added.

The U.S. Geological Survey, for its part, said the Landsat-7 satellite in the fall of 2007 and the summer of 2008 had detected radio signals from the ground that seemed to be an attempt to "lock on" to it, a step that must be completed before a ground station's command can be received.

In both cases, the apparent attempts failed and no information was compromised, said USGS spokesman Jon Campbell.

Pentagon response
The Defense Department would not comment on the alleged hacking but said it is monitoring China's development of "counter-space" capabilities.

The department is increasing the resilience of U.S. assets in space and is improving "the ability to operate in a degraded environment," among other precautions, said Army Lieutenant Colonel James Gregory, a Pentagon spokesman.

    1. Moon and planets offer triple treat

Look toward the southwestern horizon just after sunset on Friday night and you?ll see a triple feature of Venus, Mercury, and the two-day old moon. And there's another planet treat in time for the pre-Halloween weekend, too.

    3. Huge asteroid to buzz Earth on Nov. 8
    4. Asteroid may have core of hot melted metal

Degraded environment refers to any compromise of the U.S. military's sophisticated high-tech digital networks.

Hackers appear to have worked through Svalbard Satellite Station, or SvalSat, in Spitsbergen, Norway, which routinely connects to the Internet to transfer data, the commission's draft added in an excerpt provided to Reuters.

Located about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) from the North Pole, SvalSat is well-placed to communicate with satellites in polar orbit, the report said.

The company that owns the ground station said it saw no sign of the penetration reported by the commission. "Our systems indicated nothing," Kongsberg Satellite Services President Rolf Skatteboe told Reuters in Oslo. "We don't understand where this is coming from."

Larry Wortzel, a commissioner who is a retired U.S. Army colonel and former military attache in China, said Beijing had conducted numerous tests on space warfare systems in 2007 and 2008.

"I don't think it is a wild analytical leap to suggest that these hacks could have been part of that matrix of testing," Wortzel said in an email to Reuters.

The bipartisan commission typically goes much further in publicly outlining perceived security threats from Beijing than have U.S. administrations, which must deal with other issues on which China's cooperation is critical. These include North Korea's nuclear program, regional security and matters before the U.N. Security Council.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

The report does not spell out the nature of the interference, but says that hackers "achieved all steps required to command" the Terra AM-1 satellite without ever actually exercising that control.

The interference was disturbing because it could be used to access satellites with more sensitive functions, the commission's draft said.

"For example, access to a satellite's controls could allow an attacker to damage or destroy the satellite. The attacker could also deny or degrade as well as forge or otherwise manipulate the satellite's transmission," the report said.

Madoff son thought text from dad was suicide note (AP)

NEW YORK ? A son of disgraced Wall Street financier Bernard Madoff called authorities in a panic after receiving a text message he thought was a suicide note from his dad months after his December 2008 fraud scheme arrest, a new book says.

The forthcoming book, "Truth and Consequences," recounts how Andrew Madoff and his brother, Mark Madoff, got the message on their cellphones in March 2009. Bernard Madoff told his sons he loved them and to look after their mother. The book says it was the first communication Andrew Madoff had from his father after his arrest.

Andrew Madoff called police, who checked on his father and found no cause for concern.

The book also has wife and mother Ruth Madoff recounting how she and Bernard Madoff tried to kill themselves weeks after his arrest.

"Truth and Consequences," written by Laurie Sandell, will be published by Little, Brown and Co. on Oct. 31. The Associated Press bought a copy Thursday.

Bernard Madoff, who stole billions of dollars in the largest Ponzi scheme in history and pleaded guilty to fraud charges, recently told an interviewer he has terrible remorse and horrible nightmares over his epic scheme but feels happier in prison than he's felt in 20 years.

Barbara Walters told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Thursday that she interviewed Madoff for two hours at the prison in Butner, N.C., where he's serving a 150-year sentence. No cameras were allowed in the prison.

Walters said Madoff, who's in his 70s, told her he thought about suicide before being sent to prison but since he's been there he no longer thinks about it.

His comments come ahead of his wife's appearance on Sunday's edition of CBS' "60 Minutes," on which she talks about the Christmas Eve 2008 suicide attempt.

"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," she says in the interview, according to excerpts released by CBS.

She says the couple took "a bunch of pills" including the insomnia prescription medication Ambien, but they both woke up the next day. She says the decision was "very impulsive" and she's glad they didn't die.

Andrew Madoff also will talk about his experience on CBS.

Little, Brown has been promoting "Truth and Consequences" since the summer, when it alerted booksellers that an untitled book, by Anonymous, would be coming out in the fall and would tell "the inside story of life with one of the most controversial figures of our time."

Stores were thus asked to blindly order the book, knowing neither the author nor the title, a sales technique reserved for high-profile releases. Sandell had extensive access to the Madoff family and interviewed Ruth Madoff, Andrew Madoff and his fianc?e, Catherine Hooper.

The book presents a complicated portrayal, showing family ties that were seemingly both a blessing and a burden. It recounts their reactions to the news that their world was built upon a lie as well as the aftermath, and the damage it did to their relationships with each other. It features moments like the one when Andrew Madoff remembers his mother shouting at him over his and his brother's refusal to sign onto his father's bail agreement, as well as his sister-in-law's refusal to allow his mother at Mark Madoff's memorial.

"Truth and Consequences" comes out 11 days after Stephanie Madoff Mack's "The End of Normal: A Wife's Anguish, A Widow's New Life." Mack was the wife of Mark Madoff, who killed himself on the second anniversary of his father's arrest.

"I hated Bernie thoroughly and deeply from the instant Mark told me what he had done," Mack wrote.

Mark Madoff hanged himself by a dog leash last year on the anniversary of his father's arrest. Like his parents, he had swallowed a batch of sleeping pills in a failed suicide attempt 14 months earlier, according to his widow's book.

Bernie Madoff was arrested on Dec. 11, 2008, the morning after his sons notified authorities through an attorney that he had confessed to them that his investment business was a multibillion-dollar Ponzi scheme and he had cheated thousands of investors.

Madoff ran his scheme for at least two decades, using his investment advisory service to cheat individuals, charities, celebrities and institutional investors.

An investigation found Madoff never made any investments, instead using the money from new investors to pay returns to existing clients ? and to finance a lavish lifestyle for his family. Losses have been estimated at around $20 billion, making it the biggest investment fraud in U.S. history.

China sees fuel shortages, warns against hoarding (AP)

SHANGHAI ? China's chronic fuel shortages are worsening with the onset of winter, as output lags behind surging demand following price cuts that are worsening refiners' losses.

The shortfalls are worst in eastern and central China, where some filling stations have run out of diesel fuel and authorities are warning against hoarding.

A surge in demand due to the end-of-year rush of construction projects and factory deliveries, the autumn harvest and transport of coal suppliers for winter heating has been worsened by hoarding following a recent cut in the government's wholesale price for fuel products, analysts and government reports said Thursday.

"Some companies expect supplies to be tight and they are storing the oil to boost profits because they know demand will be stronger in this season," said Lin Boqiang, an energy professor at Xiamen University.

In a notice on its website Thursday, the government in Hunan province called on local authorities to prevent illegal sales and hoarding of fuel to ensure "orderly supplies."

"Short supplies persist and the number of filling stations that have suspended sales has increased," the notice said. The last three months of the year account for nearly a third of annual fuel demand, according to the Hunan government.

The persistent shortages reflect the limitations of China's system of centralized control of fuel prices. Because individual producers don't set their own prices, many often cut production to limit losses when domestic fuel prices are lower than what they must pay for imported oil.

In 2009, the government began changing domestic refined oil prices to reflect trends in international prices. In its first price cut in over a year, earlier this month the government announced a reduction in wholesale prices for diesel and gasoline, by 300 yuan ($47) per ton.

The shift was expected to aid the government's effort to cool inflation. But since then, prices for crude oil have rebounded, to above $92 a barrel Thursday from about $75 two weeks earlier.

Refiners are now under pressure to raise output at a time when rising costs are once again forcing them to produce at a loss.

China faces similar side effects from its controls on coal and power prices, which in turn can aggravate fuel shortages when manufacturers turn to diesel generators to make up for power outages, said Lin.

Apart from goading refiners into raising output, "The government needs to guarantee enough power in the winter ... to push power plants to work hard and produce enough electricity," he said.

State-owned Sinopec, Asia's largest refiner by capacity, announced earlier this week that it has been operating at full capacity trying to keep up with demand and planned to raise its output by 2.8 percent in November, processing 18.3 million tons of crude oil.

It said it was adjusting its production mix and postponing planned maintenance in some refineries to ensure higher capacity for diesel production.

Sinopec says it sells an average 413,000 tons of refined fuel a day, with a record high 284,000 tons going to its own filling stations and the rest going to other operators, who reportedly have been complaining they are unable to get supplies.

"We do sell to the other gas stations," Huang Wensheng, a Sinopec spokesman, said Thursday.

But China's independent refiners have more leeway to cut production when prices fall and are holding back, waiting for fuel prices to be adjusted upward again.

"Some private oil companies are not so willing to produce since imported crude oil is getting expensive, so they are just using 40 percent of their capacity," said Han Xiaoping, chief information officer of the energy website China5e.com.

"It's just because some companies expect to make more money when prices are raised again soon, so they are hoarding oil," said Han.

"The supply shortage will be solved when the next adjustment, which I expect within about a half a month," he said. "Once the price is raised, the problem will be solved."

(AP) ? A high school teacher was convicted Thursday of having sex with five students, some of them football players, after a judge rejected an insanity defense that argued the teens took advantage of her.

Stacy Schuler was sentenced to a total of four years in prison for the encounters with the Mason High School students at her home in Springboro in southwest Ohio in 2010. She can ask a judge to free her from prison after six months.

The 33-year-old Schuler, who could have faced decades in prison, cried as she was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom.

The five teens testified that Schuler, a health and gym teacher, had been drinking alcohol at the time of the encounters and was a willing participant who initiated much of the contact. The teens were about 17 at the time. The age of consent in Ohio is 16, but it's illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student.

"This is a noble profession that you have, and I've heard a lot of good things about you, but I know that you had the opportunity, as all teachers do, to affect the lives of our children," Warren County Common Pleas Judge Robert Peeler said. "You crossed a line."

Schuler's lawyers argued that she had medical and psychological issues and couldn't remember the encounters.

Before sentencing Schuler on 16 counts of sexual battery and three counts of providing alcohol to a minor, the judge said it would be a "magnificent leap" to believe she didn't know her actions were wrong.

Schuler didn't testify during the four-day nonjury trial, and she and her attorneys declined to address the judge before he sentenced her.

But parents of two of the teen victims made tearful statements.

A father spoke of his son's depression and lost motivation and said the teen almost didn't go to college. He asked the judge to hand down a sentence to send a message that Schuler's acts are not acceptable and there are serious consequences.

"It impacts the teaching community as a whole, how a single teacher who made the wrong decision multiple times overshadows 99.9 percent of the teachers that truly do care, not pretend to care, about their students," he said.

A mother said her son turned to and trusted Schuler during an extremely low period when his father had cancer and related health problems.

"These young men may appear as if they are tough guys, but in reality, they are truly hurting," she said.

"She took advantage of their vulnerability. She crossed the line and it is unacceptable."

Assistant prosecutor Teresa Hiett further pointed out to the judge how the teens have been affected, noting that Mason High School was shut down for the week of the trial because "everyone's been trying to figure out who these five boys were."

Testimony from a defense psychologist had suggested that Schuler's medical and physical ailments, combined with her vegan diet and use of alcohol and an antidepressant, helped impair her ability to tell right from wrong.

A psychologist for the prosecution rebutted that testimony, saying that the use of alcohol does not meet the state standard for an insanity defense and that willingly getting drunk is not a legal defense for a crime.

Two former Mason students had testified that Schuler had devised a plan to enter an insanity plea before she was ever charged. Other students testified on Schuler's behalf, hugging her in the courtroom and telling the judge she was a supportive advocate who kept appropriate boundaries.

Schuler had been a teacher and athletic trainer at the school north of Cincinnati since 2000 before resigning in February after an anonymous tip to the school led to the charges against her.

IndyCar has issues to fix beyond Wheldon accident (AP)

IndyCar made gains this year in building a buzz about the series that many believed would carry over into the 2012 season.

Even so, there was obvious work that still had to be done during the offseason. Though the investigation of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon's death now takes top priority, other pressing issues can't be forgotten.

First up is the 2012 car that Wheldon, the primary test driver, helped develop. The investigation into Wheldon's death ? the result of a 15-car accident in the early laps of the Oct. 16 season finale at Las Vegas ? could reveal information that potentially could be applied to the car.

Four-time series champion Dario Franchitti got his first laps in the car this week during a two-day test at Sebring, and said Thursday that drivers have a long way to go in getting the car ready for next season.

"I'm really appreciative of Dallara naming the car after Dan; he did put a lot of work into it, and he did a really good job of not telling us anything," Franchitti said. "He was very secretive about what went on so he didn't give anyone an advantage, and a few of us tried to tap him for information.

"We're at the beginning of a long development process. ... We still have a lot of work to do. It will be a busy couple of months."

Although the new car has been touted as both safer and technologically improved, Wheldon's accident has led to a call for a variety of new features such as increased horsepower, less downforce and a closed canopy cockpit, which driver Will Power said isn't realistic.

"It's no question better than the old car, a little easier to drive and it's definitely faster," said Power, who has tested. "But I think a canopy itself would be a very long-term project. You've got to be able to get out of the car if there happened to be a fire; you've got to be able to be extracted quickly. It's not something that can be put on in the next three months."

Franchitti also downplayed the calls for a canopy.

"This is the problem with these knee-jerk things," said Franchitti, "how big a canopy would there have had to have been for Dan to survive? How thick would it have had to have been? You know?"

While the teams work on car development, CEO Randy Bernard must address the 2012 schedule, which is unfinished.

Bernard previously had announced that the series will return next season to Detroit's Belle Isle Park, and he's been working hard on a deal to stage an event in China.

Although Las Vegas already had been announced as the season finale, a return to that track or any other high-banked oval is up for debate.

NASCAR five-time champion Jimmie Johnson was blasted by fans for calling on IndyCar to stop racing on ovals, but Johnson specifically meant the high-banked tracks. Franchitti and Power, two of IndyCar's most visible drivers, said Johnson is not off the mark.

"I absolutely understood what he meant, and I think that was totally taken the wrong way," Power said. "But my personal thought is that all those tracks, the high-banked tracks, were built for NASCAR. Las Vegas used to be a track we could race, and then they added the banking. The fact is, a stock car is three times the weight of an IndyCar, and that it makes it very difficult to get the formula right for many of those big ovals."

IndyCar wants to mix ovals with street and road courses as Bernard tries to market the series as the most versatile in motorsports. His struggle now will be finding enough suitable venues. Texas Motor Speedway, a banked oval, presumably will be on the 2012 schedule, but a sanctioning agreement has not been completed yet with a track many consider to be second in prestige only to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage said he wants IndyCar back, and the lack of a deal right now is strictly business related. It doesn't help that Gossage loved Texas running after the Indy 500 ? the date Belle Isle now has.

Penske Racing president Tim Cindric said completing a schedule is paramount.

"There's a lot of priorities, and one is to understand what the schedule is for next year because people have to plan," Cindric said. "We have to establish how we are going to compete so that the manufacturers that have come into the series have a level playing field, and the drivers that are competing in the series are confident that we're going to continue to improve the areas of competition and the areas of safety."

Bernard also has two very serious areas of competition to address.

This past season was controversial as drivers openly complained of inconsistent officiating. Although the politically correct way to fingerpoint was to blame a muddled rule book that leaves much room for interpretation, drivers also lashed out at race director Brian Barnhart.

In August, Power jumped out of his car, hopped over a wall and then flashed two middle fingers at race officials following an aborted restart on a wet track at New Hampshire. He later was fined $30,000 and put on probation for the obscene gesture. A month later, three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves called Barnhart a "circus clown" during a Twitter rant about a penalty imposed on the final lap at Japan. He also was fined $30,000.

Before the season ended Bernard promised an offseason "scrubbing" of the rule book. In a recent interview, he told The Associated Press that's still the plan.

"Our goal was always to have this done by mid-December, but it might take an extra couple of weeks with the investigation now being the priority," he said. "We know we need to tighten the rule book, and we'll debrief over the next few weeks with many people in the series and react with an appropriate plan."

Bernard would not speculate about Barnhart's future.

"We're debriefing on all elements," he said.

Power suggested creating a team of stewards similar to Formula One so that one person in race control doesn't have the authority to make every decision. But even if nothing changed, a tighter rule book could alleviate some of the controversy.

"I'd add people up there to make the decision, to make it easier on the race director so he doesn't have to do everything. It will make things easier and make the decisions fair, no question," Power said. "But the rule book absolutely needs to be black and white, clear as day. Whoever is calling the race has to be able to make clear decisions and understand exactly what the penalty is. That's something that absolutely has got to be changed."

Obama college loan plan aims at an old voting bloc (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Seeking to shore up support among cash-strapped college graduates and students struggling with rising tuition costs, President Barack Obama is outlining a plan to allow millions of student loan recipients to lower their payments and consolidate their loans.

Outside of mortgages, student loans are the No. 1 source of household debt. Young voters were an important bloc in Obama's 2008 campaign, and student loan debt is a common concern among Occupy Wall Street protesters.

Obama's announcement, to take place Wednesday in Denver, comes the same day a new report is being released by the College Board. It shows average in-state tuition and fees at four-year public colleges rose $631 this fall, or 8.3 percent, compared with a year ago. Nationally, the cost of a full credit load has passed $8,000, an all-time high.

The White House said Obama will use his executive authority to provide student loan relief in two ways.

First, he will accelerate a measure passed by Congress that reduces the maximum repayment on student loans from 15 percent of discretionary income annually to 10 percent. The White House wants it to go into effect in 2012, instead of 2014. In addition, the White House says the remaining debt would be forgiven after 20 years, instead of 25. About 1.6 million borrowers could be affected.

Second, he will allow borrowers who have a loan from the Federal Family Education Loan Program and a direct loan from the government to consolidate them into one loan. The consolidated loan would carry an interest rate of up to a half percentage point less than before. This could affect 5.8 million more borrowers.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan told reporters on a conference call that the changes could save some borrowers hundreds of dollars a month.

"These are real savings that will help these graduates get started in their careers and help them make ends meet," Duncan said.

The White House said the changes will carry no additional costs to taxpayers.

Last year, Congress passed a law that lowered the repayment cap and moved all student loans to direct lending by eliminating banks as the middlemen. Before that, borrowers could get loans directly from the government or from the Federal Family Education Loan Program; the latter were issued by private lenders but basically insured by the government. The law was passed along with the health care overhaul with the anticipation that it could save about $60 billion over a decade.

Today, there are 23 million borrowers with $490 billion in loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Program. Last year, the Education Department made $102.2 billion in direct loans to 11.5 million recipients.

Increases in federal aid have helped ease the burden on students dealing with tuition increases, the White House Council of Economic Advisers said in a report Wednesday.

"Despite large increases in the published price of college over the past four years, the average student has not seen commensurate increases in the net price of college, defined as the published price minus grants, scholarships and tax benefits," the report said.

Meanwhile, the Education Department and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced a project Tuesday to simplify the financial aid award letters that colleges mail to students each spring. A common complaint is that colleges obscure the inclusion of student loans in financial aid packages to make their school appear more affordable, and the agencies hope families will more easily be able to compare the costs of colleges.

Separately, James Runcie, the Education Department's federal student aid chief operating officer, told a congressional panel Tuesday that the personal financial details of as many 5,000 college students were temporarily viewable on the department's direct loan website earlier this month.

Runcie said site was shut down while the matter was resolved, and the affected students have been notified and offered credit monitoring.

New test can precisely pinpoint food pathogens

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

With salmonella-tainted ground turkey sickening more than 100 people and listeria-contaminated cantaloupes killing 15 this year, the ability to detect outbreaks of food-borne illness and determine their sources has become a top public health priority.

A new approach, reported online Oct. 14 in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiologyby a collaborative team led by Cornell University scientists, will enable government agencies and food companies to pinpoint the exact nature and origin of food-borne bacteria with unprecedented accuracy, says food science professor Martin Wiedmann.

The standard method of tracing food-borne illness involves breaking up the DNA of bacteria samples into smaller pieces and analyzing their banding patterns.

But scientists often find that different strains of bacteria have common DNA fingerprints that are too genetically similar to be able to differentiate between them, making it difficult to establish whether the salmonella that made one person sick was the same salmonella that infected another person. This was the case in a salmonella outbreak linked to salami made with contaminated black and red pepper that included 272 cases in 44 states between July 2009 and April 2010.

To surmount this challenge, Wiedmann adopted a genomic approach.

By sequencing the genome of 47 samples of the bacteria -- 20 that had been collected from human sources during the outbreak, and 27 control samples collected from human, food, animal and environmental sources before the outbreak -- Wiedmann and his team were able to rapidly discriminate between outbreak-related cases and non-outbreak related cases, isolating four samples believed to be connected to the pepper contamination.

In the process of doing so, he also found other links: A Salmonella strain that led to a nationwide recall of pistachio nuts in 2009 turned up in samples from four people -- only one of whom had reported eating pistachios.

Other connected cases suggested smaller outbreaks of which officials had been previously unaware.

"The use of genome sequencing methods to investigate outbreaks of food-borne bacterial diseases is relatively new, and holds great promise as it can help to identify the temporal, geographical and evolutionary origin of an outbreak," Wiedmann said. "In particular, full genome sequence data may help to identify small outbreaks that may not be easily detected with lower resolution subtyping approaches."

Wiedmann, research associate Henk den Bakker and other lab members developed the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) test that is specific to the 2009 pepper-associated outbreak with the help of researchers at Life Technologies Corp. They also collaborated with researchers at Washington State University and departments of health in New York City and New York state.

A similar approach has previously been used in hospital settings to trace pathogenic bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, but this is its first application for food-borne illness. Wiedmann said he is continuing to perfect the method and use it to test other types of bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other agencies are also starting to use similar approaches.

Over the next two years the company will invest approximately $75 million in its European operations, which also includes new network PoPs in Amsterdam, London, and Frankfurt.

New and existing customers across Europe, especially the large corporate enterprises, Internet savvy small and medium sized businesses (SMBs), social media and gaming start-ups that make up SoftLayer?s core customer base, will be able to leverage these new capabilities, which will officially ?go live? at the beginning of November. European customers can now easily order SoftLayer?s unique cloud, dedicated, and managed hosting solutions.

?This launch strengthens our foothold across Europe by bringing our services closer to our existing and expanding customer base,? said Lance Crosby, Chief Executive Officer for SoftLayer. ?Proximity to our customers is crucial to driving innovation and improving a better end-user experience. Currently more than 50 percent of our business is done outside North America. Our continued expansion into international markets gives our customers more control and flexibility in the way they manage and build out their cloud infrastructures and services.?

Today, with nearly half of its 23,000 customers coming from more than 140 countries, SoftLayer has an established international customer base and European demand for SoftLayer?s IT hosting services continues to soar across a variety of industries and countries. Companies like Ultra Knowledge, Flumotion, BaseCase and Magma Mobile, which have all adopted SoftLayer solutions and are able to deploy, scale and manage their Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions based on SoftLayer?s private network.

?We needed a scalable and reliable hosting provider with global network capabilities, more than just standard IT bells and whistles, to meet our growing demands,? said Etienne Jambou, Chief Marketing Officer for Magma Mobile. ?SoftLayer provided us with a complete range of IT infrastructure services from development and production environments to web hosting and database management. Thanks to the robustness of SoftLayer?s infrastructure we have been able to remain focused on our core business.?

With the opening of the Amsterdam data center, SoftLayer will have 13 data centers and 16 PoPs worldwide. Each data center is functionally independent with distinct and redundant resources, as well as fully integrated with all SoftLayer facilities. The company?s global network fully integrates three distinct and redundant network architectures?public, private, and data center to data center?into the industry?s first Network-Within-a-Network topology for maximum accessibility, security, and control.

?The market opportunity for providing hosting and cloud solutions is still in its infancy,? said Melanie A. Posey, IDC Research Vice President, Hosting & Managed Network Services. ?Companies like SoftLayer are taking the lead in establishing a globally accessible network that is helping push the adoption of these computing models to a broader mainstream audience. The addition of the new data center and capabilities will provide a foundation for users to securely run a complete gamut of solutions and services based on SoftLayer?s unique Intellectual Property (IP) and turnkey offerings.?

Magnolia picks up "360" starring Rachel Weisz, Jude Law (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to "360," a drama starring Rachel Weisz, Anthony Hopkins and Jude Law, the company announced Monday.

Ben Foster, Jamel Debbouze and Moritz Bleibtreu also star.

Law plays a businessman who is thinking about a liaison with a prostitute. Weisz plays a married woman who is ending her relationship with a younger man. Hopkins plays a man who is searching for his missing daughter, and Foster plays a sex offender recently out of prison.

The movie is based on "Reigen," a play by the late Arthur Schnitzler. The play is made up of short scenes between lovers -- either just before or after sex.

Meirelles, who directed Weisz in "City of God," shot the movie in Vienna, Paris, London, Bratislava and Rio de Janeiro. Peter Morgan ("The Queen," "Frost/Nixon") wrote the script.

Andrew Eaton and David Linde produced with Chris Hanley, Danny Krausz and Emanuel Michael.

Magnolia plans a theatrical release in 2012. The movie also will be distributed through Magnolia's Ultra VOD program.

Insight: Jobless voters could desert Obama at election (Reuters)

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) ? The slot machines jangle away with the promise of sudden riches, but many visitors to a job fair at a second-tier casino here are hoping merely for a minimum-wage job to snap their losing streak.

The grim economy hasn't been the only disappointment of the past several years for those hoping to find work with the limousine companies, insurance agencies and home healthcare providers that have set up shop at this career fair.

Ask Kimberly Howard who she voted for in 2008, and she glances sideways before confiding what appears to be a shameful secret. "Obama," she mutters.

It's not a choice she plans to repeat next year. She thinks perhaps Republicans will do a better job of fixing the economy. "I hope so. I'm praying so," she says quietly.

In order for President Barack Obama to win reelection next year, he will have to convince voters like Howard to give him another chance, particularly in battleground states with high unemployment like Nevada, which the president visited on Monday.

The unemployed, long an afterthought in political campaigns, could emerge as a surprise swing constituency next year. For decades, conventional wisdom was that the unemployed did not vote as much as those with jobs.

But new research based on the current economic slump shows a different picture. People who have lost their jobs are nearly twice as likely to switch support from incumbents, according to Andrew Healy, an economist at Loyola Marymount University.

Examining local layoff notices around the 2008 election, Healy found in an national study that 39 percent of the newly unemployed who had backed the incumbent party in the prior election switched their support to the opposition, compared with only 20 percent of other voters.

That helped Obama win Republican-leaning states like Indiana in 2008, but could put him on the defensive this time in states like Nevada and Michigan, where jobless households could make up a substantial portion of the electorate.

During the last two elections as the economy has stagnated, those who have lost their jobs have actually voted at a higher rate than the employed, according to national research being developed by Matthew Incantulpo, a graduate student at Princeton University.

UNHAPPY WITH STATUS QUO

He found that those who lost their jobs before the 2008 and 2010 elections had turnout rates roughly 7 percentage points higher than a control group of voters who lost their jobs shortly after the election. In 1996, when the economy was healthy, the newly unemployed had turnout rates 10 percentage points lower than the control group.

The economic downturn has hit especially hard among large swaths of the coalition that powered Obama to victory in 2008, and many of those voters could have a hard time squaring his promises of hope and change with their own struggles.

"I don't see any changes he's made that have been positive for people," Howard says as she fills out an application form. "He keeps saying 'more jobs, more jobs,' but I've been out of work for four months and I'm not seeing any improvement."

The shaky economy is expected to be the dominant issue in the November 2012 election. Those who have personal experience with job loss could make up a significantly larger chunk of the electorate than the official 9.1 percent unemployment rate would suggest.

In last year's congressional elections, a historic rout for Obama's Democrats, nearly one in three voters had experienced a job loss in their households, according to exit polls.

Next year's election could see a similar pattern as the jobless rate is projected to remain above 8 percent.

Obama aims to convince voters he is a better bet to boost the economy than his eventual Republican rival. Since September, he has been campaigning on his American Jobs Act, which has been blocked by Republicans in Congress.

"The President brought the economy back from the brink of another depression and he has fought for a fairer economy that rewards hard work and responsibility," said campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. "He is fighting every day to create jobs and restore economic security for the middle class."

That argument doesn't carry much weight with those at the job fair who backed Obama in 2008.

"He could have done a lot more from what he promised at the beginning and I just haven't seen it happen," says Augistin Zaragosa, 49. "The help that he gave us all a couple years ago, that was basically nothing."

LABOR UNIONS GET INVOLVED

Democrats' traditional allies in the labor movement are trying to mobilize the unemployed.

With the help of the Service Employees International Union, Linda Overby, an out-of-work painter in Las Vegas, has been organizing protests at the local offices of Republican lawmakers who oppose Obama's jobs bill.

Participation has grown as the protests have harnessed the anger many feel about Republican efforts to erode workers' rights, she said, and the Occupy Wall Street has helped to raise awareness as well.

"I am seeing people start to wake up," Overby said.

But increased activism does not necessarily equal increased support for Obama.

The International Association of Machinists counts 10,000 to 15,000 members in its Union of Unemployed, an effort to counteract the sense of isolation that can come with job loss and push for policies that would help those looking for work.

The group views Obama's jobs bill as a mixed bag, and an unscientific survey found widespread dissatisfaction with his presidency, even among Democrats.

"These folks are the swing voters of the next election cycle," said Rick Sloan, the group's executive director. "If they don't see any change in their lives, they're going to vote for a change."

Obama's bill would continue enhanced unemployment benefits in place since 2009 but that would do nothing for those who have been jobless for so long they have already exhausted them, Sloan said.

Sam Guy, a 24-year-old who hopes to find work in the insurance industry, said he hasn't decided how to vote next year. But his enthusiasm for Obama has waned. "I'm not rolling around with a bumper sticker this time," he said.
