Actress Mary Tyler Moore is scheduled to undergo elective surgery to remove a benign tumor located in her brain. While there are conflicting reports as to when the surgery will actually take place, some suggest that she was to go under the knife today. The TV icon is said to have been dealing with the meningioma in her brain for a few years now. Her publicist, Alla Plotkin, told PEOPLE: “At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure.” A meningioma is typically benign and are oftentimes diagnosed in older women. Moore turned 74 in December. We first fell in love with America’s sweetheart when she played housewife Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke Show. She would later have a show of her own, The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It was soon after that show premiered in 1970, when she was 33 years old, that she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
