President Obama arrives to speak at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee convention in Washington, D.C., on Sunday. Obama tried to defuse the controversy that erupted last week when he argued that Palestinian-Israeli peace talks should begin with Israel's 1967 borders, with mutually agreed upon land swaps.

President Obama told America's pro-Israel lobby on Sunday that his comments last week about Israeli-Palestinian borders was a public expression of longstanding U.S. policy.

In a speech Thursday outlining overall U.S. policy toward the Middle East, Obama argued that Palestinian-Israeli peace talks should begin with Israel's 1967 borders with mutually agreed upon land swaps. Those remarks rankled many of Israel's staunchest supporters.

As one speaker put it on Sunday, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee is "the home of America's pro-Israel movement."

Sitting in the audience of 10,000 on Sunday was Judith Pfeffer, of Warrenton, Pa., who described herself as a huge Obama supporter. But she said his remarks Thursday had left her troubled.

"Although I'm usually more to the mainstream or to the left in Israeli politics, I really understand [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu on this issue," she said.

When the president and the prime minister met in the Oval Office on Friday, Netanyahu looked Obama in the eye and called his proposal "indefensible."

"While Israel is prepared to make generous compromises for peace, it cannot go back to the 1967 lines," Netanyahu said.

On Sunday, Obama tried to defuse the controversy. He told AIPAC that his position is no different from the U.S. position going back to the 1990s.

"What I did on Thursday was to say publicly what has long been acknowledged privately," he said.

He argued his position had been misrepresented. The audience responded favorably when he explained that he wants Israelis and Palestinians themselves to negotiate a border that is different from the 1967 lines.

"That's what mutually agreed upon swaps means," Obama said. "It is a well-known formula to all who have worked on this issue for a generation. It allows the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years."

Obama said the world is changing so fast that delaying peace will only make Israel's challenges grow.

Still, there's no sign of real peace negotiations starting anytime soon.

That left Randall Levitt of Rockville, Md., wondering why Obama decided to wade into this morass now.

"My general feeling is that it's completely unnecessary and ill-timed and I'm really unable to understand why he created a conflict and disagreement with a close ally at a moment in time when there doesn't appear to be any possibility at all for meaningful negotiations," Levitt said.

Whether the controversy is authentic or manufactured, as Obama claims, Sunday's speech does not seem to have made it go away.

More than a dozen big tech companies, including Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), Google (NSDQ: GOOG), Cisco (NSDQ: CSCO), Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN), Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE), Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT), Verizon, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), and others. Those companies are believed to be ?licensees? as well as investors. That is, they paid money for patent licenses so that IV would never sue them; and they?re also being promised something on the back-end, so that if IV makes money licensing from others, these companies profit.

However, the tech companies on the list should be considered in a different light than the other investors. They invested under duress, and knew that litigation with IV might be the end result if they didn?t pay up to become an ?investment.? Also, some of these companies, including Google and Cisco, have been investors for many years, and in the early years IV had a very different tone. Back then, the giant patent-holding company, which was founded by ex-Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold, billed itself as a ?patent defense fund.? (Clearly, it hasn?t turned out that way. )

One strange twist is that Xilinx itself is also an investor, even though it?s engaged in litigation with IV. Perhaps Xilinx only licensed a portion of IV patents, and could still be sued under others; either way, it suggests a major falling-out between two entities that at one point were able to strike a deal.

?? Eight major research universities are on the list, as is the Mayo Clinic and Grinnell College in Iowa. These research institutions appear to have simply invested cash hoping for a return. While many (if not all) of these institutions own patents, they don?t appear to have transferred any to Intellectual Ventures.

The universities are unlikely to have been threatened with infringement lawsuits like the tech companies might have been, so they were likely simply pulled in by IV?s sales pitch.

?? Many top-tier technology investors are also involved with IV, including VC firms like Charles River Ventures and charitable foundations like the Hewlett Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Overall, the presence of the universities and foundations on this list is a somewhat unsettling revelation. It isn?t clear that IV?s patent-licensing behavior?and now, litigation?is good for innovation in any way. IV claims it ?invests in invention,? but there aren?t any successful spinoffs that have spawned from IV funding or technology, and the social benefits of simply amassing patents are highly questionable, at best.

SALT LAKE CITY ? When Josh Ferrin closed on his family?s first home, he never thought he?d make the discovery of a lifetime ? then give it back.

Ferrin picked up the keys earlier this week and decided to check out the house in the Salt Lake City suburb of Bountiful. He was excited to finally have a place his family could call their own.

As he walked into the garage, a piece of cloth that clung to an attic door caught his eye. He opened the hatch and climbed up the ladder, then pulled out a metal box that looked like a World War II ammunition case.

?I freaked out, locked it my car, and called my wife to tell her she wouldn?t believe what I had found,? said Ferrin, who works as an artist for the Deseret News in Salt Lake City.

Then he found seven more boxes, all stuffed full with tightly wound rolls of cash bundled together with twine ? more than $40,000.

Ferrin quickly took the boxes to his parent?s house to count. Along with his wife and children, they spread out thousands of bills on a table, separating the bundles one by one.

They stopped counting at $40,000, but estimated there was at least $5,000 more on the table.

Ferrin thought about how such a large sum of money could go a long way, pay bills, buy things he never thought he could afford.

?I?m not perfect, and I wish I could say there was never any doubt in my mind. We knew we had to give it back, but it doesn?t mean I didn?t think about our car in need of repairs, how we would love to adopt a child and aren?t able to do that right now, or fix up our outdated house that we just bought,? Ferrin said. ?But the money wasn?t ours to keep and I don?t believe you get a chance very often to do something radically honest, to do something ridiculously awesome for someone else and that is a lesson I hope to teach to my children.?

He thought about the home?s previous owner, Arnold Bangerter, who died in November and left the house to his children.

?I could imagine him in his workshop. From time to time, he would carefully bundle up $100 with twine, climb up into his attic and put it into a box to save. And he didn?t do that for me,? Ferrin said of the man who had worked as a biologist for the Utah Department of Fish and Game.

Bangerter purchased the home in 1966 and lived there with his wife, who died in 2005.

After most of the money was counted, Ferrin called one of Bangerter?s sons with the news.

Kay Bangerter said he knew his father hid away money because he once found a bundle of cash taped beneath a drawer in their home, but he never considered his dad had stuffed away so much over the years.

?He grew up in hard times and people that survived that era didn?t have anything when they came out of it unless they saved it themselves,? Kay Bangerter, the oldest of the six children, told the Deseret News. ?He was a saver, not a spender.?

Bangerter called the money?s return ?a story that will outlast our generation and probably yours as well.?

?I?m a father, and I worry about the future for my kids,? Ferrin said. ?I can see him putting that money away for a rainy day and it would have been wrong of me to deny him that thing he worked on for years. I felt like I got to write a chapter in his life, a chapter he wasn?t able to finish and see it through to its conclusion.?
