Great Books for Kids and Teens: Middle-Grade Review: Okay for Now

Okay for Now, an audio book by Gary D. Schmidt, was one of the winners of a 2012 Odyssey Honor Award for audio books.? The award was well deserved.? This was one of the best middle-grade books I have ever read (or listened to) and one of the best audio book productions I have ever listened to.? It was one of those rare books that I couldn?t wait to finish but never wanted to end.

Doug Swieteck has a rough life: his dad is abusive, his brother is a bully, and his oldest brother is off fighting in Vietnam.? To make matters worse, his father loses his job and moves the family from Long Island to ?stupid Marysville? (as Doug calls it throughout the book), a small town in the Catskills, where there is nothing going on and Doug knows no one.? Even worse, everyone in town seems to assume that Doug is a thug, like his brother.? The only things that make his life bearable are his kind mother (and especially, her smile) and Lil, who teaches him how to drink a really cold Coke and becomes his first friend in Marysville.

Doug is the most endearingly flawed but likable narrator since Tom Sawyer.? Even though it sometimes feels like the whole world is falling apart around him, Doug keeps moving forward.? He discovers the Marysville Library?s greatest treasure, John James Audubon?s Birds of America, with its amazing paintings, and he becomes the town?s new grocery delivery boy on Saturday mornings.? Little by little, he finds things to like about stupid Marysville and becomes a part of the community, but not without plenty of challenges and struggles.

I loved every minute of this audio book that had me both laughing out loud and choking back tears at various points.? It is funny and heartbreaking and heartwarming, all at once, while it recreates a period of time in small-town America that has long past.? Most of all, it is real.? Doug?s ups and downs mirror those every person encounters in real life ? setbacks alternating with moving forward, heart-renching times followed by joys.? Schmidt has created a cast of characters that you really come to care about.? I definitely want to go back and read Schmidt?s Newberry Honor novel, The Wednesday Wars, which introduced Doug for the first time.? Okay for Now is among the best that middle-grade literature has to offer.

Trial begins Monday in Ohio Amish hair: cutting attacks

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the hate crime trial of 16 members of an Ohio Amish splinter group charged in connection with a spate of beard- and hair-cutting attacks on other Amish people last fall.

The 16 men and women, most of them related, are charged in three separate attacks on nine people, including the parents of some of the suspects. The series of crimes rocked the normally quiet, pacifist Amish community in southeast Ohio.

The assaults were considered especially egregious because the beard is a symbol of a man's identity among the Amish, and women in the community do not cut their hair for biblical reasons.

The trial is to be held in U.S. District Court in Cleveland.

Federal prosecutors say the attacks were revenge for a dispute between Samuel Mullet Sr. and other Amish bishops after those bishops disputed the ex-communication of eight families from Mullet's breakaway group.

Authorities accused Mullet, 66, of being the ringleader of the assaults, although they say he was not present during any of them. Authorities said conversations recorded in jail before federal charges were brought revealed that he was planning more attacks.

Mullet and the others face 10 counts, including obstruction, conspiracy and a federal hate crime, "for willfully causing bodily injury because of actual and perceived religion."

Two defendants, Mullet and Lester Miller, have filed motions arguing that the hate crime statute, which carries a possible life sentence, does not apply to intra-religious disputes and is a violation of the separation of powers.

Seven defendants, including Mullet, have been in custody since their arrest in October.

Last week, Judge Dan Polster ruled that prosecutors are not permitted to refer to Mullet's community using terms that may be derogatory, like "cult" or "sect," but they will be able to present evidence of Mullet's sexual "counseling" of female members of his group even though he has not been charged with a sex crime.

Another earlier ruling allows the defense to argue that the cutting of a person's hair or beard does not constitute bodily harm even though the Amish believe married men and women must abstain from cutting their hair.

Members of the Amish community will not be required to be sworn in before testifying because oath-taking is considered a violation of their religion.

The judge has banned cameras and blogging from the courtroom during the trial.

General: Ramadan factor in Afghan insider attacks

(AP) ? The rising number of attacks on U.S. troops by Afghan police and soldiers may be due in part to the stress on Afghan forces from fasting during the just-concluded Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Thursday.

Marine Gen. John R. Allen, speaking to reporters at the Pentagon from his headquarters in Kabul, said the reasons behind the attacks are not fully understood and likely can be attributed to a variety of factors, including Taliban infiltration of the Afghan security forces.

He cited Ramadan and the requirement for Muslims to not eat or drink during daylight hours as another factor.

"It's a very tough time for these (Afghan) forces," he said, particularly since they were fasting during the heat of the summer and the peak of the fighting season and have been facing combat strains for many years.

"We believe that the combination of many of these particular factors may have come together during the last several weeks to generate the larger numbers" of attacks, he said. Already this month there have been at least 10 "insider" attacks by Afghans, killing 10 Americans. The latest was Sunday when an Afghan police officer opened fire inside a police station in the southern district of Spin Boldak, killing a 55-year-old U.S. Army soldier.

The general said that roughly 25 percent of insider attacks can be linked to the Taliban, who in some cases have impersonated members of the Afghan security forces and in some cases have co-opted them through threats.

Allen was asked about an assertion by the office of President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday that the insider attacks can be blamed on the brainwashing of Afghan recruits by foreign intelligence agents.

"I'm looking forward to Afghanistan providing us with the intelligence that permits them to come to that conclusion so that we can understand how they've drawn that conclusion," Allen said.

Offering an overview of the war effort, Allen said the strategy of handing off security responsibilities to the Afghans is on track.

"It's been a highly successful summer," he said.

"Coalition and Afghan forces have maintained unrelenting pressure on the insurgents, and we have denied and disrupted their operations and have largely pushed them out of the population centers," he said. "We've limited their freedom of movement, and we've interdicted their logistics. We've taken scores of their leaders and fighters off the battlefield, and we've systematically separated the insurgents from more and more of the Afghan population."

(AP) ? Voters in this presidential election may face the starkest choice ever on the hot-button social issues of same-sex marriage, abortion rights and access to birth control.

Even as most voters tell pollsters the economy is their chief concern, advocacy groups on the left and right are in high gear ? with bus tours, YouTube videos and fundraising ? pointing out the sharp differences between the parties in the current phase of the culture wars.

Indeed, President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party seem increasingly eager to raise these issues proactively. They are touting their support for same-sex marriage and accusing the Republicans of waging a "war on women" by opposing abortion rights and federal programs to boost women's access to birth control.

Republicans have responded by accusing the president and his party of waging a "war on religion" via the portion of Obama's health care law that requires contraceptives to be available for free for women enrolled in workplace health plans. Many Roman Catholic and evangelical voters contend that this mandate violates religious freedom because some faith-affiliated employers would have to comply.

Such wedge issues can be pushed to the forefront of the campaign unexpectedly. That occurred this week when the Republican Senate nominee in Missouri, Rep. Todd Akin, referred to women's bodies as being able to prevent pregnancies if they are victims of "a legitimate rape" while explaining why he opposed abortion in all circumstances. Republicans as well as Democrats criticized Akin severely.

Obama called Akin's views "offensive" and said the idea of distinguishing among types of rape "doesn't make sense to the American people and certainly doesn't make sense to me." Republican candidate Mitt Romney called Akin's comments "insulting, inexcusable and frankly wrong." While Akin apologized and said he would remain in the race, GOP officials made it clear they wanted him to quit.

The upcoming nominating conventions will highlight the contrasts between the parties on abortion and other issues.

The platform for the Democratic National Convention is expected to put the party on record, for the first time, in support of same-sex marriage, echoing the stance taken by Obama in May.

Romney and his newly chosen running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, favor a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. The speaker list for their convention includes former Sen. Rick Santorum, a hardline opponent of abortion and gay marriage, and Mike Huckabee, who recently helped engineer an "appreciation day" for the Chick-fil-A fast-food chain after gay-rights groups protested its president's stance against gay marriage.

The nationwide show of support produced record sales, according to Chick-fil-A.

Ryan, though best known for his economic proposals, is at least as conservative as Romney on social issues. He has voted against allowing same-sex couples to adopt and opposed repealing the ban on gays serving openly in the armed forces.

Ryan, who told the Weekly Standard in 2010 that he was "as pro-life as a person gets," has earned perfect scores from the National Right to Life Committee and other anti-abortion groups. He co-sponsored measures asserting that life begins at the moment of fertilization and ? like Romney ? favors repeal of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established a right to abortion.

Abortion-rights groups were quick to assail Ryan.

"Make no mistake about it: Ryan is 100 percent behind the war on women agenda," said Nancy Keenan of NARAL-Pro Choice America.

Social conservatives welcomed Ryan's selection, even though it remains to be seen how outspoken he'll be about various hot-button topics.

"Paul Ryan's philosophy clearly includes the understanding that America's financial greatness is tied directly to its moral and cultural wholeness," said Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council.

Some political analysts suggest that the Democrats might see an advantage in shifting the campaign conversation away from jobs and toward divisive social issues.

"Social issues are the best ammunition the Obama campaign has to pull independents away from Romney," conservative columnist Kathleen Parker wrote this week. She faulted the GOP for giving too much power to "a certain faction that insists on purity pledges."

The presidential race is not the only one where a culture clash is at hand this year. Four states have gay-marriage measures on their ballots. In Minnesota, the vote is whether to put a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution, while voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington will decide whether to legalize gay marriage.

National gay-rights groups are pumping millions of dollars into these state campaigns, hoping to end a long losing streak. Thus far, gay marriage has been rebuffed in all 32 states that have held referendums on the issue.

Meanwhile, the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and affirms the right of states to refuse to recognize such marriages, is under criticism in courts. Several federal judges have ruled it unconstitutional.

The Obama administration is no longer defending the act, and has asked the Supreme Court to settle the legal fights over it.

Robert George, a conservative professor of jurisprudence at Princeton University who opposes same-sex marriage, said the issue could be pivotal in a few crucial swing states where a majority of voters in the past have endorsed bans on gay marriages. Among them are Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio.

"Back in 2008, Obama was able to keep the issue out of the campaign, as he wanted to do," George said. "Now it will be an issue. Romney's position is clear and consistent, and there's a big distinction between the candidates."

North Carolina, one of the battleground states, had a referendum in May in which voters approved a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

The issue remains lively there, perhaps because it's more clear-cut than the economic debate, according to Tracy Tuten, a professor of marketing at East Carolina University in Greenville who has studied issues related to gays and mass media. She was struck by the intense responses ? from gay-marriage foes and supporters ? to the recent Chick-fil-A controversy.

"People were leaving work to go buy chicken sandwiches, or to protest buying chicken sandwiches," she said. "It's something they can wrap their head around."

Buying a True Religious Internet Business Option? | michael kors

    Posted on | August 20, 2012 | Comments Off

Lately I was looking on the Internet for an Christian home based business. Naturally, the search was notably unsatisfactory due to the signifigant amounts of web sites all claiming to provide the perfect treatment for my home based business requirements. Regrettably, very few of the firms I investigated were really started by Christians. Fewer still were constructed around Christian business standards and ethics. Nearly all organizations providing home based business opportunities were merely Christian home business owners searching for Christian clients. Sorry, that?s not what I was searching for. Anyone can claim to become a Christian, just as quickly as anyone can claim to be a true Christian business manager. I did not want to become part of an online business opportunity unless it absolutely was undoubtedly a Christian-based business, created by Christians, running on Christian spiritual concepts, and an online business that could allow me to be my own boss.If you research Google for ?christian home based business? a lot of the leading websites aren?t Christian firms at all. The majority are Christian business websites. That?s fine easily were seeking for a typical job working for a normal business, or desired to start a typical mortar? and ?bricks business. But I was trying to find a true home where I might work from home on an or full-time basis centered business. I like the thought of working from the ease of my own home, around my own schedule, and without building a large investment and most of the risk that adopts working an average ?bricks and mortar? businessSo, when you?re like me and wanting to begin your own Christian home based business, let me tell you some things I have discovered. There are a few methods you can start this sort of business, but just one is actually a house based business. You can always look for a specific product or service that will have a broad interest Christians, and then market your business through traditional marketing strategies such as for example produce or media advertising. Obviously the most truly effective marketing tool could be the Internet. But unless you really learn how to make use of the power of the Internet, you are essentially at a loss. Even if you build an internet site, it?ll quickly become lost among the countless similar internet sites on the worldwide web. It?s type of like planting a tree in a rainforest. You need to study all the special ways of generating Internet traffic to your website. The most effective online Christian business opportunity is one that not only gives services or products that appeal to every one ? including Christians ? but which also provides you with an entire turn-key procedure, and will likely then show you anything you need to know about Internet advertising. It must also be economical. It must not cost a small fortune to you to begin with. The up-front costs to getting right into a great Internet business may range from several hundred to well over two-thousand pounds or even more. Often, the more you pay, the more you get. Just make certain there are no additional hidden charges for services you should purchase at a later time. Any additional costs, if there are any, should be purely elective and should not have an adverse impact on your corporations capability to attract buyers if you thought we would choose out of those additional services. Plus, a legitimate on-line business should allow a fairly steady income stream to be generated by you within a reasonable amount of time. Immediate profits can be promised by no Internet business opportunity, Christian or otherwise,. If they do, there?s often a capture. But you ought to be able to start generating true earnings within 4 to 6 weeks after you start ? assuming you?re putting in the time, and following through on all the instruction you have to be a success. But imagine if you are not ?computer literate?? What if you rarely know how to sign onto your computer and search the Internet? Would you still have a successful Christian residence based business online? It all depends when the business opportunity you decide on supplies an undoubtedly complete training curriculum. Needless to say, some internet sites provide services where they do all of the work of talking and advertising to potential customers. But these services price, and may rapidly eat into your profits. If you really would like to become successful in business, specially online, you need to show patience, and take the time to find out how to get it done all yourself. That doesn?t means you need to always get it done all by yourself. You only need to find out how exactly to effectively market your business and speak with prospects. After those skills have been learned by you then you can determine how a lot of your time you want to spend doing those tasks yourself, and how many you might want to outsource to others. Nevertheless the main point here is you need to have a group of true professionals backing you up, and providing you the best and most up-to-date Internet marketing strategies within a comprehensive training program. You not only need to learn strategies and marketing methods that will demand an investment of your personal money, but in addition efficient marketing methods and strategies that are absolutely free. Also, that training should really be open to you 24/7. Beside appointed online training workshops, you ought to have usage of a whole collection of online training programs providing expertise in most aspects of Internet recruiting and marketing. And probably most significant, make sure you likewise have support 24/7. You should be able to have issues settled within 24 to 48 hours of that time period a request is submitted by you. You must also have access to a thorough knowledge base or question and answer selection where you can find methods to problems in your own.The main point here is just this. To find the correct on the web Christian business opportunity will need a lot of homework. You?ll need to approach the entire process fairly. Which means search past all the filler and all the glitz and glamour of claims, and thoroughly examine the fundamentals of the business. Does it provide services and products that have an extensive interest people looking for an online business? Does it offer a turn-key setup that?ll put you into business immediately? Does it allow you to enter into business without a big cost? Does it provide you with a comprehensive training course so you can truly discover all of the ins and outs of Internet marketing? Does it provide a 24/7 customer service and an intensive knowledge base or Q&A collection? And probably most critical of all, can it be a really Christian business? Was it established by Christians, and does it operate on sound spiritual Christian principles of credibility, reality, equity, and the Golden Rule of accomplishing unto others as you would have others do unto you?

Total Recall: Arnold Schwarzenegger's Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Expendables 2 star.

    Arnold Schwarzenegger

He's been a bodybuilder, a bricklayer, a politician, and a restaurateur -- but for our purposes, Arnold Schwarzenegger has always been at his best when he's blowing stuff up in front of a camera, so it's with great enthusiasm that we greet his return to action in this weekend's The Expendables 2. Sure, Arnie isn't really the star of the movie, but with his political career putting his acting ambitions on hold for most of the last decade, we haven't had many chances to celebrate his greatness, and we couldn't resist taking the opportunity here. It's not a tumor, it's Total Recall!

    69%

Luring action fans to the theater in 1985 didn't come much more simply than putting Arnold Schwarzenegger in a sleeveless vest, handing him a weapon, and slapping the poster with the delicious tagline "Somewhere, somehow, someone's going to pay." Commando delivered as promised, starring Arnold as a retired Delta Force op whose daughter (Alyssa Milano) is kidnapped by an exiled Latin American dictator (Dan Hedaya) in an effort to blackmail him into assassinating his replacement. Loaded with heavy artillery and big explosions, Commando provides, in the words of Filmcritic's Pete Croatto, "one of the best arguments available for the action movie as pure entertainment."

    70%

It took a dozen years to make its way to theaters -- and did it without James Cameron -- but thanks to the durable mythology of the franchise and Schwarzenegger's welcome return to the title role, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines proved audiences were still eager for more Skynet-fueled mayhem. Starring Kristanna Loken as the first female Terminator, Nick Stahl as the new John Connor, and Claire Danes as his future bride Kate Brewster, T3 relied more heavily on special effects than storytelling, leaving some critics cold -- but for others, even diluted Terminator was good for a couple more hours of popcorn entertainment. "A sizable quotient of the movie's target audience just wants to see stuff destroyed," sighed the Chicago Reader's J.R. Jones, "and in that regard Rise of the Machines won't disappoint."

    72%

The death knell had sounded for the big, dumb 1980s action movie with 1992's prophetically titled The Last Action Hero -- which, fittingly, also starred Schwarzenegger -- but James Cameron helped revitalize the genre with this light, funny, fast-moving thrill ride that boasted likable performances from not only its well-muscled star, but a crackerjack supporting cast that included Jamie Lee Curtis, Bill Paxton, and Tom Arnold at his funniest. Though it was heavily criticized for being misogynist and racist, True Lies combined with Speed to make the summer of 1994 feel a little like the 1980s never ended, and took Cameron's reign as a Hollywood action king to its logical conclusion while earning the begrudging praise of critics like the Globe and Mail's Rick Groen, who wrote, "However high your ranking on the culture scale, I defy you to watch this and leave the theatre without a whistled 'Wow' followed by a grudging 'That's entertainment.'"

    73%

Say it's the mid-1970s and you're making a movie with a part for an Austrian bodybuilder who plays the fiddle. What do you do? For Bob Rafelson, director of Stay Hungry, the choice was easy: Hand Arnold Schwarzenegger a fiddle. And the results weren't as silly as they might sound, either -- starring Jeff Bridges as the conflicted flunky of some crooked real estate developers who want to strongarm their way into ownership of a Birmingham gym, Hungry earned high critical marks for its assured storytelling and offbeat charm. "When the movie's over, we're still not sure why it was made," admitted Roger Ebert, "but we've had fun and so, it appears, has Rafelson."

    76%

Producer Joel Silver and Schwarzenegger teamed up twice during the 1980s, and the results -- Commando and Predator -- are among any action fan's favorites from the era. Here, Schwarzenegger must lead a team of tough-as-nails soldiers into the jungle on what's believed to be a rescue mission for prisoners of war -- but which quickly turns out to be a bloody fight against a dreadlocked interstellar hunter (played to perfection by the late, lamented Kevin Peter Hall). Silver's pictures from the period tended to follow a certain formula, but at this point, familiarity hadn't yet bred contempt -- and anyway, if Predator lacks a surplus of moving parts, it does what it's supposed to with cool precision. "It achieves a sort of sublime purity," sighed an appreciative Tim Brayton for Antagony & Ecstacy. "It is Action Movie, nothing more and nothing less."

Gavin Newsom Song Will Change The Way You Think About Newsom, Music And Enjoying Things

Isn't it about time someone wrote a song about Gavin Newsom?

The former San Francisco mayor, current California Lt. Governor and Current TV talk show host has always attracted an outsize amount of attention. But up until now, most of that attention has either come from media gadflies or from giant chickens.

Now, a musician has penned an ode to California's best coiffed elected official entitled "Suck This C*ck Gavin." It goes without saying that the song absolutely filthy.

The tune marks the extremely NSFW title track on a new album by Grant MacDonald.

See, MacDonald really doesn't like Newsom, due to his long-standing family connection to the Gettys. SFist explains:

From what we can tell of the 30-second previews, the rest of the album seems an indictment of the Getty family for stealing World War II masterpieces and "supporting Adolf Hitler's oil supply", which is as good a conspiracy theory as any, we guess. MacDonald himself released an entire 45-minute documentary cleverly titled "Gettymovie" back in 2008, detailing Getty patriarch J.P. Getty's involvement with the F?hrer. Surprisingly, and sadly, we can't find any mentions of forbidden love between Getty and Hitler.

MacDonald's website also claims he is suing Getty Oil for $22 billion over WWII war crimes charges.

Other than ranting about the Gettys and penning multiple odes to what he'd do (sexually) to the most telegenic member of the University of California Board of Regents, most of the rest of MacDonald's expansive oeuvre is dedicated to songs about what he'd do (sexually) to various cowboys.

Personally, when it comes to the wide world of Gavin Newsom songs, we prefer "I'm Gavin Newsom, You're A Hipster" by Bang Maiden.

Or, you know, there's probably at least one Joanna Newsom song with a coded reference to her famous political cousin. Maybe this one. Or this one. Or this one.

Actually, we're just going to go listen to a bunch of Joanna Newsom songs now.

Giant Burmese python discovered in Florida (+video)

A newly found Burmese python has broken previous records in size and egg capacity. The discovery is an indication of just how comfortable the invasive species is in its Florida home.?

Heflick and Navarro are joined by Pugsley, a 13 ft. Burmese python.

At 17 feet, 7 inches (5.3 meters) in length, it is the largest snake of its kind found in the state and it was carrying a record 87 eggs. Scientists say the finding highlights how dangerously comfortable the invasive species has become in its new home.

"This thing is monstrous, it's about a foot wide," said Kenneth Krysko, of the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida. "It means these?snakes?are surviving a long time in the wild, there's nothing stopping them and the native wildlife are in trouble."

The giant female python was discovered in the Everglades National Park and had been stored since May in a freezer at the museum; on Friday, researchers at the museum studied its internal anatomy, making the wild discovery.

Florida is the?world capital for invasive reptiles and amphibians, and the Burmese python, native to Southeast Asia, is one of the state's most prominent new residents. The snake was introduced to Florida by the exotic pet trade three decades ago and is now one of the region's deadliest and most competitive predators. [See Photos of Record Burmese Python]

"They were here 25 years ago, but in very low numbers and it was difficult to find one because of their cryptic behavior," Krysko said in a statement from the University of Florida. "Now, you can go out to the Everglades nearly any day of the week and find a Burmese python. We've found 14 in a single day."

Officials worry that the snakes pose a threat to humans, as well as to native, endangered species, which turn up in the pythons' stomachs. This record-breaking, 164.5-pound (75-kg) specimen found in Everglades National Park had feathers in its belly that will be identified by museum ornithologists, the researchers said. Research published this year suggested the pythons are not only eating the Everglades' birds but they're also snatching, and likely?swallowing whole birds' eggs.

Population estimates for the Burmese python in Florida range from the thousands to hundreds of thousands, the researchers said. Studying this massive female specimen with dozens of babies on board could help scientists understand how to curb the spread of the python and other invasive animals.

"By learning what this animal has been eating and its reproductive status, it will hopefully give us insight into how to potentially manage other wild Burmese pythons in the future," Krysko said.

Previous state records for Burmese pythons found in the wild were 16.8 feet (5.1 meters) long and 85 eggs, the researchers said.

Obama opens his Chicago home to supporters

CHICAGO (AP) ? The red-brick Georgian Revival home was gleaming: An American flag extended from the porch, the evergreen trees surrounding the yard were pruned and the red impatiens and begonias were blooming. Guests mingled at tables covered with stylish lime-colored tablecloths and listened to light jazz before their host said a few words.

Just a nice summertime garden party on a Sunday ? along with beefy Secret Service agents, the buzz of a motorcade waiting outside, and a black pole extending high over the corner of the property, dotted with surveillance equipment and cameras.

"Welcome to my house!" said President Barack Obama, greeting donors at his South Side home. "I have to say, the lawn hasn't looked this good in a while. But I figured, but at least Michelle figured, that if everyone was coming over we ought to neaten up a little bit."

Obama opened up his home in Chicago's Kenwood neighborhood for a marquee fundraiser, welcoming about 75 of his top donors who wished the president a belated happy birthday ? No. 51 ? and gave big bucks to his re-election campaign. It was part of a full day of hometown fundraising for Obama, who was expected to haul in $3.5 million to $4 million to fuel his campaign against Republican Mitt Romney.

The president was among friends, noting that many in the audience knew him "when I barely owned a suit," a reference to his time as a community organizer during the mid-1980s. "This place is where I learned about the importance of bringing communities together to solve problems."

Michelle Obama wasn't there, instead raising money for her husband's campaign at events in Los Angeles. But the president reminded guests that she was born and raised in Chicago, where they met and started a family. "I think it's fair to say I'm an adopted son of the South Side."

Obama's weekend fundraising trip had all the trappings of a local homecoming, right down to the crowds gathered by the nearby Pancake House to cheer on his motorcade on Saturday night and a banner hanging on a fence a few blocks from his home that said, "Happy Birthday President Obama."

The weekend offered a rare two-night stay for Obama at his house. The president stayed at a hotel during NATO meetings in June because of security concerns. He arrived on Saturday afternoon and met advisers at his Chicago campaign headquarters, then grabbed dinner with friends at a local eatery called Piccolo Sogno Due, which means "Little Dream 2" in Italian.

During his Chicago sojourn, his motorcade swept past Grant Park several times, letting him look at the park where throngs of supporters cheered his victory on election night in 2008. He could look out the window and see Soldier Field, home of his beloved Chicago Bears, and watch the final day of the Olympic Games on television.

Making his own Olympic analogy, Obama told his donors ? most of whom paid $40,000 per person to attend ? that the 2012 election wasn't going to turn out like a Usain Bolt race, referring to the dominant Jamaican sprinter who was so fast he could jog to the finish line. "We're going to have to run through the tape. But we're really well positioned to not just win but to keep America moving forward."

By dusk, with temperatures in the mid-70s, the president was ready for an evening stroll.

His next fundraiser was at the home of Marty Nesbitt, one of his closest friends, followed by another at the home of Barbara Bowman, the mother of Valerie Jarrett, a longtime adviser and friend.

Nesbitt's home was so close that the president decided to walk, slinging his black blazer over his left shoulder while he was trailed by Secret Service agents and his entourage. He shook hands with cheering neighbors and gave a local TV crew a presidential shout-out for his favorite baseball team, the Chicago White Sox.

"Nice to be home?" shouted a member of the press corps.

"It's always nice to be home," Obama said. "A little cooler than Washington, isn't it?"
