Toyota kicks off auto show in Toronto : Canadian auto dealer

The popular and electrifying dance troupe iLuminate made their Canadian debut at the Toyota booth.

Toyota Canada officially kicked off the 2012 Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS) in Toronto with an energetic stage show featuring the Canadian debut of the popular dance troupe iLuminate, three new Canadian vehicle debuts, and speeches from senior Toyota leaders.

The high octane, upbeat event was in keeping with the spirit of ?Waku Doki? ? which in Japanese roughly translates into ?heart pumping, adrenaline racing? and which the company says also characterizes the its renewed approach to producing exciting and fun to drive cars.

?Certainly, this is one of the most exciting times of my career. I have been on the job for a little more than one month,? said Seiji Ichii, the new President and CEO of Toyota Canada Inc., who spoke at the opening ceremonies. ?In that time, we achieved our best January ever with a record 10,660 sales. Thank you, Canada, for this warm welcome..?

Three new vehicles, the Prius c, the Scion FR-S and the RAV4 EV made their Canadian debut at this year?s show.

Here?s a quick overview of some of the models Toyota unveiled at this year?s event.

2013 Scion FR-S
A car built in the tradition of lightweight rear-wheel drive performance cars, namely the old 1983-87 Toyota Corolla GT/GTS (Trueno Sprinter in Japan), the Scion FR-S (Front engine, Rear-wheel drive Sport) takes the same approach, optimal balance, low-centre of gravity and predictable rear-wheel drive handling (it boasts a 53:47 front/rear weight distribution, which rivals some exotic supercars). Utilizing a 200 horsepower, 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, which a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions (the latter with paddle shift technology), it?ll serve as a halo vehicle for the Scion brand in Canada and very likely attract new customers into the fold. Although pricing has yet to be announced, expect an MSRP of under $30,000 and a range of personalization accessories to materialize when the FR-S goes on sale across Canada later this year as a 2013 model.

2012 Toyota Prius c
One of the biggest obstacles to Hybrid vehicle ownership for many has been the relatively high sticker price. Toyota is attempting to change that with the Prius c. Standing for ?city? this latest edition to the Prius family sports a MSRP of $20,950, which by the time it goes on sale in March, will make it the lowest priced Hybrid vehicle on the market. According to Toyota Canada Inc. president Seiji Ichii the Prius c is ?priced, styled and packaged to appeal to young [urban] consumers on a budget.? With a projected fuel economy rating of 3.7/litres per 100 km, it also ranks as one of the most fuel-efficient non Plug-in Hybrid vehicles available. Positioning it towards Gen Y customers (which are expected to account for 40 per cent of vehicle purchases over the next decade) it?s introduction could not come at a better time, especially as many auto buyers today are searching for greener alternatives, while remaining very much budget conscious when it comes to actual vehicle purchases.

2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
Perhaps the most obvious approach to improving the efficiency of the existing Prius, is via Plug In Hybrid technology. The resulting Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHV) boosts fuel mileage and reduces emissions, by enabling the vehicle to travel a distance of 25 km (15 miles), on pure electric power alone. Beyond that, Toyota?s Hybrid Synergy Drive system provides a practical and secure alternative to pure electric vehicle driving to ensure that over long distances, motorists don?t suffer from range anxiety. Among Plug-in vehicles, the Prius PHV also has one of the shortest charging cycles on the market (1.5 hours 240-v, 3.5 hours on a standard 120 v household electrical system).

2012 Prius v
Besides improving fuel efficiency, another approach to expanding the Prius range, is by adding practicality and interior room. The Prius v (versatile); does just that, adding much need passenger cargo space. In fact, the vehicle?s luggage swallowing capacity bests many small SUVs on the market by some 80 percent, while offering consumers a much more fuel-efficient alternative (combined city/highway fuel economy is below 4.6 litres per 100 km). Multiple storage areas, including a dual glovebox, as well as additional spaces under the cargo floor and interior sail panels, further add to the Prius v?s practicality.

2012 Toyota RAV4 EV
Although Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid technology is very much a part of Toyota?s strategy as it moves forward to deliver consumers, more efficient, cleaner vehicles, it?s also continuing to explore pure electric propulsion systems. It?s latest 2012 RAV 4 Electric Vehicle project, developed in conjunction with Tesla Motors, also has a Canadian connection, with the vehicles being assembled at TCI?s Woodstock, Ontario facility.

Toyota was also honoured with a number of awards including two ecoENERGY Awards from Natural Resources Canada?s Office of Energy Efficiency for the 2012 Toyota Tacoma and the all-new 2012 Prius v.

Toyota received three Canadian Residual Value Awards from the automotive insights company ALG, for the Toyota Camry in the mid-size car category, the Toyota Tacoma in the mid-size pickup segment, and Toyota Tundra in the full-size pickup category.

Toyota models took the top spots in five categories in the Canadian Black Book (CBB) Retained Value Awards. The winners were: full-size car: Toyota Avalon; small pickup: Toyota Tacoma; full-size pickup: Toyota Tundra; mid-size SUV: Toyota FJ Cruiser and full-size SUV: Toyota Sequoia.
