ScienceDaily (Mar. 31, 2012) ? A species of lizard is now extinct from the Hawaiian Islands, making it the latest native vertebrate species to become extirpated from this tropical archipelago.
The copper striped blue-tailed skink (Emoia impar) -- a sleek lizard with smooth, polished scales and a long, sky-blue tail -- was last confirmed in the Na'Pali coast of Kauai in the 1960s. But repeated field surveys on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawai'i islands from 1988 to 2008 have yielded no sightings or specimens.
"No other landscape in these United States has been more impacted by extinction events and species invasions in historic times than the Hawaiian Islands, with as yet unknown long-term cascading consequences to the ecosystem," said U.S. Geological Survey director Marcia McNutt. "Today, we close the book on one more animal that is unlikely to ever be re-established in this fragile island home."
"This skink was once common throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and in fact the species can still be found on many other island groups in the tropical Pacific," says Robert Fisher, a biologist with the USGS Western Ecological Research Center. "That's what makes this extinction so intriguing: if an otherwise common animal can be completely extirpated from one island ecosystem but not others, then what does that tell us?"
Fisher and colleague Ivan Ineich of the Mus?um national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris announced their findings on E. impar this month in the international conservation journal "Oryx," published by Fauna and Flora International.
Small animals like this skink are prone to what Fisher and Ineich call "cryptic extinction" -- when a species is easily confused with similar species that their extinction can go unnoticed for decades.
"The extinction of native Hawaiian bird species is well documented, partly because their presence and sounds had been so distinctive to humans," says Ineich, who is also a researcher with the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). "But without regular field surveys, we tend to overlook the disappearances of smaller, secretive species, along with the causes of their extinction."
While the exact causes of the skink's Hawaiian extinction is unclear, Fisher and Ineich note that island extinctions around the world often share similar factors, such as the loss of habitat due to uncontrolled human development. Another is competition or predation from invasive species accidentally or intentionally introduced through human migration and activity.
"There's some evidence that an invasive ant was preying on these skinks," Fisher says. "That's a new factor we'll need to examine as we look out for other at-risk species in the Pacific islands."

Chances are, you recently saw a video of a man who appeared to fly using a contraption that allowed to him to flap his wings like a bird. That video turned out to be a hoax, but there are definitely some real flying machines out there that are just as crazy.
Giant paper airplane Tucson?s Pima Air and Space Museum created this massive Arturo Desert paper airplane, which weighs 800 pounds and has a wingspan of 24 feet. Recently, the plane was hauled by a helicopter to an altitude of about 4,000 feet before being released ? resulting in a six-second flight that reached speeds of 98 mph. No word yet on whether or not the military plans to weaponize it as a means of inflicting catastrophic papercuts on enemy forces. Cubiclebot
Back to the Future flying DeLorean YouTuber native118 created this awesome custom-built flying quadrocopter modeled after Doc Brown?s DeLorean from "Back to the Future." Besides sporting LED lighting effects and intricate detail right down to a tiny Mr. Fusion, the model features stabilization control powered by MultiWii, a HobbyKing 12A BlueSeries speed controller, and Turnigy 2204-14T motors. Unfortunately, this isn't a commercial product, so you won't be able to send your action figures back in time on a mission to tell your mom not to throw away all of your original Star Wars toys. Hoverbike Australian Chris Malloy has made himself an actual hoverbike that he claims can achieve speeds of 173 mph and altitudes in excess of 10,000 feet. Of course, the prototype falls a bit short of that mark, having only gone so far as to hover 3 feet while tethered to the ground. So don't expect to be blazing through the forests of Endor anytime soon ??or, as Malloy suggests, using it for "aerial cattle mustering." Still, I have confidence that flying cowboys will one day roam the plains. Hoverbike via Nerd Approved
Tacocopter The company behind the Tacocopter has a simple dream ??to allow customers to order tacos via their smart phone, and have said tacos delivered via an unmanned drone helicopter. But before you get excited about the prospect of flying tacos delivered straight to your door, the plan has a few major obstacles to overcome. For one thing, the government does not currently allow UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to be used for commercial purposes. In addition, there would be a number of logistical hurdles, including avoiding birds, balconies, telephone wires, delivering food to people indoors, delivering food to the right person and protecting the Tacocopters from being attacked by animals and hungry, impoverished college students. e-volo multicopter It looks like something straight out of the margins of one of da Vinci's notebooks, but this German-designed e-volo multicopter is touted as the possible future of flight?? a device that can be piloted "as simple as a car." ?The aircraft is equipped with 16 tiny propellers driven by independent electric motors, and the lithium batteries would allow for 10 to 30 minutes of flight depending on payload and battery capacity ??expending roughly $10 worth of electricity in the process. It's also purported to be fairly safe, and can land even if four of its motors fail. There's also an option of installing a safety parachute. ?e-volo via Nerd Approved
Breakthrough Quadrocopter Mark Cutler and Jonathan P. Howe have developed the first quadrotor drone with variable-pitch propellers, making it possible to do all kinds of aggressive acrobatics. Full-size helicopters have this capability, too, but are not able to match this kind of precise performance. That is, unless you have a pilot with a ridiculous amount of skill. On this jetpack, the engines are attached to your feet with a steering mechanism on your hands Iron Man style ??making it possible to perform crazy maneuvers like diving in and out of the water. But the best news is that you won't need Tony Stark money to enjoy it as the basic Flyboard will set you back around $6600. Zapata Racing

Introduction
Have you ever noticed how sometimes what seems logical turns out to be proved false with a little math? For instance, how many people do you think it would take to survey, on average, to find two people who share the same birthday? Due to probability, sometimes an event is more likely to occur than we believe it to. In this case, if you survey a random group of just 23 people there is actually about a 50?50 chance that two of them will have the same birthday. This is known as the birthday paradox. Don't believe it's true? You can test it and see mathematical probability in action!
Background
The birthday paradox, also known as the birthday problem, states that in a random group of 23 people, there is about a 50 percent chance that two people have the same birthday. Is this really true? There are multiple reasons why this seems like a paradox. One is that when in a room with 22 other people, if a person compares his or her birthday with the birthdays of the other people it would make for only 22 comparisons?only 22 chances for people to share the same birthday.
But when all 23 birthdays are compared against each other, it makes for much more than 22 comparisons. How much more? Well, the first person has 22 comparisons to make, but the second person was already compared to the first person, so there are only 21 comparisons to make. The third person then has 20 comparisons, the fourth person has 19 and so on. If you add up all possible comparisons (22 + 21 + 20 + 19 + ? +1) the sum is 253 comparisons, or combinations. Consequently, each group of 23 people involves 253 comparisons, or 253 chances for matching birthdays.
Materials
??? ?Groups of 23 or more people (10 to 12 such groups) or a source with random birthdays (see Preparation below for tips)
??? ?Paper and pen or pencil
??? ?Calculator (optional)
Preparation
??? ?Collect birthdays for random groups of 23 or more people. Ideally you should get 10 to 12 groups of 23 or more people so you have enough different groups to compare. (You don't need the year for the birthdays, just the month and day.)
??? ?Tip: Here are a few ways that you can find a number of randomly grouped people: Ask school teachers to pass a list around each of their classes to collect the birthdays for students in the class (most schools have around 25 students in a class); use the birthdays of players on major league baseball teams (this information can easily be found on the Internet); or use the birthdays of other random people using online sources.
Procedure
??? ?For each group of 23 or more birthdays that you collected, sort through them to see if there are any birthday matches in each group.
??? ?How many of your groups have two or more people with the same birthday? Based on the birthday paradox, how many groups would you expect to find that have two people with the same birthday? Does the birthday paradox hold true?
??? ?Extra: In this activity you used a group of 23 or more people, but you could try it using bigger groups. If you use a group of 366 people?the greatest number of days a year can have?the odds that two people have the same birthday are 100 percent (excluding February 29 leap year birthdays), but what do you think the odds are in a group of 60 or 75 people?
??? ?Extra: Rolling dice is a great way to investigate probability. You could try rolling three 10-sided dice and five six-sided dice 100 times each and record the results of each roll. Calculate the mathematical probability of getting a sum higher than 18 for each combination of dice when rolling them 100 times. (This Web site can teach you how to calculate probability: Probability Central from Oracle ThinkQuest.) Which combination has a higher mathematical probability, and was this true when you rolled them?

In-demand producer/DJ also talks to MTV News about upcoming projects with No Doubt, Snoop Dogg, more. By Zachary Swickey
Diplo performs in Madison, Wisconsin on Tuesday Photo: Evan Scott/MTV News
MADISON, Wisconsin It was just four years ago that Diplo put his production prowess on full display with M.I.A.'s mega-hit "Paper Planes." Since then, the DJ/producer has become a go-to producer for major acts like Usher, whose latest single, R&B jam "Climax," features work from the Philadelphia native.
On Tuesday, MTV News hit up the first stop on the campus-themed AXE One Night Only Tour in Wisconsin, and we caught up with the headlining DJ to talk about his upcoming projects.
"We got really luck on that one," he said of the track from Usher's upcoming album. "We just had great chemistry. I was super-nervous working with him the first two days. ... The way we did it, it was just a super-open format. He was down to do whatever we were excited about.
"I love Usher," Diplo gushed. "I'm an Usher fan. I love him for records like 'Confessions Pt. II' and 'Burn,' those are some of the first R&B records from my generation that are still lasting forever. And we did some uptempo stuff too. I don't know what'll make the album, but I think there are definitely three songs that'll make it."
Diplo is currently involved with a number of projects and luckily he was willing to dish. After working last summer with No Doubt on their upcoming record, the producer revealed he had good news to share.
"We just finished. I was actually in Jamaica last month and I went in and did some extra stuff on that record," he told us. "I'm super-excited. It's probably going to be a single for their album. They've been [tweeting] about the song, so they're excited about it. I think it's going to be a 'No Doubt featuring Major Lazer' record, because we were producers, and there's another artist on it, too, that we recorded in Jamaica.
"But you'll have to wait," Diplo warned, "I don't know how far off that record is, but every song I've heard is a bona-fide hit. '
The superstar DJ also recently took to his Facebook page and casually mentioned that he's already started production on 18 tracks for a record with Snoop Dogg.
"Snoop Dogg is an icon, man; he's bigger than the music," Diplo said. "What we're doing is a reggae record. It's like Snoop Dogg and Major Lazer together. It's all reggae and he's singing and he's doing a f---ing awesome job and I never knew it, but he had his heart in every song. ... We're going to get back into the production of it next month, and I'm really proud of that record. It's the first record I've ever executive-produced and his crew is amazing.

You?ve ?u?t bought a new car but d?f?n?tely feel th?t th? factory-made rims ?nd wheels hav? to go. For starters k??? in mind th?t the price ?f ???h set of wheels will vary depending on th? manufacturer and ?r auto shop you buy th?m from. A general rule ?f thumb i? th?t ?f ??u pay le?? that i? wh?t y?u w?ll ultimately get. We ?r? n?t advocating buying expensive custom wheels r?ther you ne?d t? be careful ?f wh?t you buy be??u?? ?ou w?nt to watch out for quality. It w?uld b? ap?r??r?ate ?f at th?? point ?n time ?ou start thinking ?f ??ur budget f?r ?our custom wheels. How much are ?ou will?ng t? pay for them?
Additionally, d?d ?ou know th?t b? changing y?ur cars? wheels and rims, ?ou ?ould unintentionally ??u?e ??ur car manufacturer?s warranty t? b?come null ?nd void? This ?? th? reason wh? ?ou n??d t? select ?n auto shop whi?h ??n give ?ou the be?t advice ?nd information if ??u w?nt to purchase custom wheels. You d? n?t w?nt to accidentally purchase wheels that l??k gorgeous but d?n?t fit the specifications ?nd end up w?th m?re troubles ?n the end. First off, h?v? a l?ok at your vehicle. Depending ?n how heavy ?t is, y?u n??d t? select suitable wheels that ?an bear ?t? weight. A wheel wh?ch ?? t?? big might c?us? problems to y?ur car?s brake system wh?le one which i? t?o small ??uld v?ry w?ll make ?t difficult for y?u t? turn. Typical custom wheels th?t ??u ?an choose w?uld be made ?f alloy or steel. Light alloy wheels will reduce the ov?r?ll weight ?f your vehicle ?nd that ?n turn means ?our vehicle i? now consuming l?s? petrol.
These type ?f wheels w?ll also be a good choice for you if y?u frequently encounter stop-go traffic while on the roads. You will n?t face ?ver heating ?f u??ng light alloy wheels b???u?e the? ?llow air to flow ?nto ??ur brakes. On th? other hand, if ?ou plan to u?e y?ur vehicle f?r heavy lifting ?r if ?ou will frequently us? back roads t? transport items, ?ou should opt for custom wheels made ?f steel b?caus? th?? ar? sturdy. Before a?tuall? purchasing y?ur new set ?f custom wheels, th?r? ?re s?me technical details ?f your car wh??h ?ou should b? aware of. What ?? th? maximum load rating ?f your car? Your n?w wheels ?h?uld b? compatible with that b???u?e ?f it isn?t, problems w?ll occur in th? future. You m?ght n?t th?nk much of it but ?a?h part of the car plays ?t? own role. A tiny or slight variation fr?m that w?ll affect the performance ?f y?ur car.
As such, when buying wheels, make ?ure th?t th?y have th? ??me bolt pattern ?? the ?nes you alre?d? h?v? ?n the vehicle. It w?uld be v?ry strange if ?ou eventually bought custom wheels th?t did n?t fit b?c?use the bolts ar? n?t ?n the ??m? place. Now th?t ?ou h?ve ? general idea of y?ur budget ?nd th? technical aspect of purchasing custom wheels, y?u ??n relax ? littl? ?nd think ab?ut th? style ?f wheels and rims that y?u w?nt ?n y?ur car. After all, that is th? reason why y?u decided t? g?t ? new set of wheels in the f?r?t place. You w?nt ?om?thing th?t mirrors ??ur personality ?nd give? y?ur car a l?ttl? bit of th?t extra jazz. If you ?re ?onsid?ring showing y?ur classic car then be ?ure ??u kn?w th? judges rules on custom rims.

The idea of creating a will and planning for the end of your life is never a fun experience. Even if you are not bothered by the idea of your own life ending, your family may have a hard time coping with the planning and it will be an altogether unpleasant experience. While you may not feel like planning for your death is a walk in the park, it is a necessary evil that will put your mind at ease and help your family cope with a difficult time period. A lawyer will be able to help you with the planning. If you have worked with an attorney concerning expense reduction or contract negotiation issues, that same attorney can probably help you with creating a will. Creating a will is fairly easy and some people do it without even using a lawyer, but it is probably better to have a professional look over your final documents just to be sure things are in order and your family will not face any problems. It is important for your intentions to be clear.
A will helps you ensure your family is protected. If you have any assets whatsoever, they are at risk when you die. Most people assume their assets will automatically pass to their spouse or their children without much interference. Most of the time, this is the case. But there are situations in which other family members get greedy or scam artists use the death of a loved one to take advantage of a family. You can ensure this does not happen to your family once you are gone by making your intentions for your assets clear in your will. Having a lawyer to back up your wishes will protect your family from any risk they may face after your death.
Wills prevent family members from arguing about things once you are gone. While you may love your family dearly and assume they will all be exactly who they are at this very moment, the truth is, people change. They may find themselves falling on hard financial times or they choose to marry someone who is not as scrupulous as you are. To avoid problems with your relatives, outline your intentions in your will. This legally binding document will prevent arguments and fighting once you are gone. While there is no telling how your family will cope with your death emotionally, at least you can remove financial issues from the equation.
While your main concern may be how your family is going to respond to your death, it is important to realize the government is going to want a piece of your pie once you are gone. The laws are constantly changing for inheritance issues, but if there is any way for the court system to prove something does not legally belong to your relatives, they will confiscate it. Protect your family from the intrusive efforts of the government following your death.
Finally, create a living will as part of your end of life planning strategy. Living wills make clear and legal your desire to have or not have life support. Creating a living will saves your loved ones the painful task of deciding whether or not to remove life support.

Novel drug in pill form safer than standard approach to treat blocked lung blood vesselsPublic release date: 26-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Simpler regimen should facilitate initial management on outpatient basis
CHICAGO -- A novel oral anti-coagulant outperformed the injected standard therapy on important safety measures for initial and long-term treatment of pulmonary embolism a blockage of lung blood vessels usually caused by a clot and showed comparable efficacy, according to data from the EINSTEIN-PE trial presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session. The Scientific Session, the premier cardiovascular medical meeting, brings cardiovascular professionals together to further advances in the field.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blot clot generally occurring in the legs, constitute the two categories of a condition called venous thromboembolism (VTE). VTE is the third most common cardiovascular disease, and PE is the third most common cause of hospital-related death. EINSTEIN-PE is one of a series of large international phase III clinical trials of the anti-coagulant rivaroxaban to treat VTE or prevent a recurrence in patients with acute PE or DVT. The Food and Drug Administration has approved rivaroxaban as the only oral anti-coagulant for prevention of VTE in patients who have knee or hip replacement, procedures that carry clotting risks.
The trial compared rivaroxaban with standard therapy injection of the anti-coagulant enoxaparin, followed by a vitamin K antagonist (VKA; either warfarin or acenocoumarol) chosen by each participating site to demonstrate that the oral drug as a single agent is equivalent to the complicated two-drug standard therapy. In the standard regimen, enoxaparin must be given as an injection, and the VKA must be monitored with blood tests to make sure the dose is adequate and safe, because common drugs such as antibiotics, alcohol and some foods interact with VKAs. The monitoring measure is INR, an expression of the time it takes blood to clot: the higher the INR number, the higher the risk of bleeding.
"If you give standard treatment in the right way, it's a perfectly effective drug with almost 90 percent reduction in recurrent thrombosis, but it has to be well controlled," said Harry R. Buller, MD, PhD, professor of vascular medicine at the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, who chairs the program for the three EINSTEIN studies. "The reason people look for alternatives is that it's a nightmare to give. Rivaroxaban makes things easier for everybody patients and physicians. Our major aim was to show that it's at least as good as standard care."
The study, conducted at 263 sites in 38 countries, randomly assigned 2,419 patients to the rivaroxaban arm and 2,414 to standard treatment. All enrolled patients had a primary diagnosis of PE, and 25 percent in both groups also had DVT. Patients were treated for three, six or 12 months (average, seven) as deemed appropriate by each clinician before randomization. The rivaroxaban group received 15 mg twice a day for three weeks followed by 20 mg once a day. In the standard-therapy arm, the regimen was enoxaparin at 1.0 mg per kg of body weight twice daily, continued at least five days and stopped when the INR was 2.0 or more for two consecutive days, plus a VKA started within 48 hours after randomization with dose adjustment to maintain an INR of 2.0 to 3.0.
Rivaroxaban's efficacy was highly significant for non-inferiority with 2.1 percent recurrences (50 events) vs. 1.8 percent (44 events) in the standard-therapy arm. On safety measures of bleeding, rivaroxaban did much better: principal safety measure of major or clinically relevant bleeding, 10.3 percent vs. 11.4 percent for standard treatment; for major bleeding alone, 1.1 percent vs. 2.2 percent for standard therapy. Rates for primary endpoints were similar in both study arms regardless of patient characteristics.
"Physicians want to know about major bleeding, the most important safety outcome, and rivaroxaban was highly significantly superior. This was our most astonishing finding," Dr. Buller said. "Rivaroxaban is just as good as standard treatment for PE these data are pretty convincing and this is an oral-only approach, which makes it very simple. The subcutaneous injections can be hazardous as well."
Researchers also will be doing a subgroup analysis of the 8,200 patients in the EINSTEIN-PE and EINSTEIN-DVT trials to see if they can identify a risk profile for patients who are likely to have bleeding problems on standard treatment or the new drug.

The trial was sponsored by Bayer HealthCare and Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Buller is reimbursed for patients who participate in the study, travel costs and administrative time, and those funds go to the hospital.
This study will be simultaneously published in the New England Journal of Medicine online at the time of presentation and will appear in the April 2012 print edition.
Dr. Buller will be available to the media on Monday, March 26, at 9:45 a.m. CDT in Media Room #1, McCormick Place North Level 1, Hall C1.
Dr. Buller will present the study "Oral Rivaroxaban Alone for Symptomatic Pulmonary Embolism: the EINSTEIN PE Study" on Monday, March 26, at 8 a.m. CDT during the Joint ACC/NEJM Late-Breaking Clinical Trials in the Main Tent of McCormick Place North.

Pervasive Computing Technology: A Glimpse of the Next Generation Computer
Article by Mazliza Othman
What is pervasive computing? It all started in 1991 when Mark Weiser envisioned the next generation computer that weaves themselves into their environment. The next generation computers make themselves invisible and intuitive to use. Computers disappear into the background. If you?re a Star Trek fan, think of the computers in this science fiction series, and you?ll get the idea.
The term coined by Weiser, ubiquitous computing, is now synonymous to pervasive computing.
Computers as they exist today do not integrate themselves into our environment. You?re aware of the fact that you?re using a computer. The PC sits on top of your desk. You carry a laptop or pocket PC around. You need to acquire certain skills in order to use them, e.g. if you want to use a spreadsheet, you have to learn to use it.
Weiser envisioned an environment where computers are integrated into the environment in such a way that users are not even aware of the computers, or that they?re using one. The computers disappear and become unobtrusive.
To illustrate the point, Weiser and his colleagues invented 3 types of devices: a tab, a pad and a board. The devices have no individualized association in they way that you associate a PC or laptop to a particular user, e.g. you can grab a tab and use it without having to figure out how you?re going to configure or personalize it to your needs. A tab is a handheld device and can be easily carried around. You can use it to access your email, chat, or to pop up a reminder for you to ask a colleague to confirm next week?s seminar if you run into him in the hallway. You?d have dozens of this in your environment.
A pad is kind of a digital version of a paper. You can spread it on your desk in the same way you spread papers on your desk.
The digital board replaces today?s whiteboard. When a group of people gather in a room, the system detects that they belong to a project group and automatically downloads the previous discussion points on the board. You can write on the board using a digital pen while sitting a few meters away from it ? just point and write.
Pervasive computing integrates computers and a smart environment, and blends them into the background. This technology is changing the way we work, live, and interact with each other.
Let?s look at a few more examples of applications of this technology.
Cowboys on horsebacks herding cattle might one day become a feature of a bygone era as the introduction of virtual fences allows farmers to herd their cattle from the comfort of their homes. The virtual fence is downloaded to the cows by transmitting GPS coordinates to head-collars worn by the cows. The dynamic virtual fences are moved along desired trajectories. The collars are equipped with a Wi-Fi networking card, a Zaurus PDA, an eTrex GPS unit and a loudspeaker that transmits occurring sounds (for example, roaring tigers, barking dogs) when a cow strays from the intended path. This multi-disciplinary project, the brain child of a biologist, is made possible in collaboration with computer scientists.
Sensor technology can potentially play an important role in search and rescue operations by first responders, i.e. emergency personnel, such as firemen, paramedic, and police, who arrive at the scene immediately after an event (e.g. a fire, an earthquake, a building collapse) occurs.
Firemen wear tags to allow easy tracking of their movement in order to coordinate search and rescue operations more effectively. The firemen can be informed if a particular section of a building is found to be unstable and is about to collapse, and is directed to evacuate it immediately. A wireless vital sign monitor is attached to victims found trapped so that their condition can be monitored in order to ensure that they receive the appropriate medical attention as soon as they are rescued.
This non-invasive sensor monitors vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen saturation and serum chemistry measurements. The vital sign monitor helps the paramedic team determine which victims are in more critical conditions so that they can prioritize medical attention to more severely injured victims. The application and architecture required to support this emergency response application is being developed under the CodeBlue project at Harvard University, USA.
Wireless technology is also used in healthcare. The Arrhythmia Monitoring System (AMS) is a medical telemetry (telemedicine) system that makes use of wireless technology to monitor patients suffering from arrhythmia. Among the complications that arise from arrhythmia are the loss of regular heartbeat and subsequent loss of function, and rapid heartbeats.
AMS provides a means for healthcare professionals to continuously monitor a patient?s electrical cardiac rhythms remotely even though the patient is not at the hospital. This technology allows patients to be in the comfort of their homes without jeopardizing their health. It is also useful for monitoring the heart functions of astronauts who are more susceptible to cardiac dysrhythmias when in space.

The best auto repair you can invest in is preventative maintenance. And while many clueless drivers swear by regular oil changes to keep your car smoothly running, that simply isn?t enough. As your car ages, parts begin to loosen and deteriorate. Fluids run dry, causing friction that can put tension on the engine. A simple oil change involves only the most basic onceover of the vehicle for any obvious signs of damage, or more often than not, ways the mechanic can make a quick buck like changing an air filter. So how do you keep your car running at top performance? A good tune up performed in accordance with your car manufacturer?s instructions can help stop small problems from getting out of hand. Dealers and mechanics often have very different views on auto repair. It?s their business to get you in as often as possible. So how do you know when it is time for a tune up? Refer to your owner?s manual. Too often people leave it to collect dust in the glove compartment, but it holds a wealth of information that can help save you some serious coin. For some cars, it may be recommended to get a tune up every 30,000 miles or annually, whichever comes first, while others may suggest the first after 50,000 and then every 30,000 following. Older cars can do with tune ups much more often, and at least once a year is always a safe bet. If you are planning on a long trip, then a tune up is absolutely necessary before you hit the road so you don?t end up stranded on the shoulder. So what should you get when you pay for a tune up? There will be some variation among shops and dealers, but for the most part, you should expect a very thorough inspection of all the parts and overall performance levels. Certain parts should be replaced such as the fuel filter, spark plugs, serpentine belts, and air filter if needed. All fluid levels should be checked and topped off with the proper products (a poorly run shop will simply use the cheapest product for every model, regardless of the manufacturer?s directions). Brake pads, steering, tires, and every other safety aspect should also be inspected for faults. Any unusual noises should be investigated as well. While most tune ups will include some basic auto repair in the price, such as spark plug replacement, if you need a new fan belt, tires, or brake pads, expect to pay extra. The mechanic should inform you of any problems before beginning the job as they need your approval. Keep your records of all past repairs, oil changes, and tune ups so you can make an accurate judgment. If you just had your brake pads changed less than a few months ago and find the mechanic is telling you they need to be replaced again, be wary. Some mechanics count on your ignorance to put more money in their pocket. To find out where, visit http://autorepairinbirmingham.com

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has become a wedding crasher.
The monarch dropped in moments after the nuptials of John and Frances Canning at Manchester Town Hall in northern England on Friday.
The newlyweds said Saturday the queen chatted and posed for wedding photographs. The queen and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, were visiting the venue for lunch at the same time the wedding took place.
"It was very special ? it was so lovely that she took the trouble to speak to us," bride Frances Canning told The Sun newspaper.
The 48-year-old groom knew beforehand that the queen would be visiting the town hall, and jokingly wrote to Buckingham Palace to invite the monarch, the tabloid reported. He received a polite reply declining the invitation, but palace officials secretly arranged the meeting, the paper said.
Canning said he spoke with Prince Philip while photos were being taken.
"He was a charming fella ? for me it was the icing on the cake," he told The Sun.
The 44-year-old bride was impressed the queen addressed them by their first names.
"She said I looked lovely and she wanted to wish us all the best for the future.
"We're going to have to get a bigger wedding album now," she was quoted as saying. "Not many people will have pictures like that."
The British monarch was in Manchester to visit a number of sites, including a new BBC headquarters building in nearby Salford, as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour. The queen is celebrating the six decades since she ascended to the throne in 1952.

Barely two weeks after the New York District Attorney asked Twitter to hand over data about an Occupy Wall Street protester, the company says it will not comply with the request, at least for the time being.
I'm personally waiting for some of LG's, shall we say, more ambitious handsets to make to their way to our shores, but until that happens, we'll have to make do with devices like the LG Lucid 4G. This Verizon-bound handset was first spotted a few weeks back a long with an unconfirmed list of specs, but a newly-leaked LG document has confirmed the goodies to come nestled in the mid-range device.
Welcome to Trademark Law Radio, a top web resource on issues of trademark infringement, trademark licensing, trademark protection, and trademark registration.
My name is Enrico Schaefer and I specialize in trademark and intellectual property issues.? Today, we?re going to be talking a bit about intellectual property and trademark rights.? Some of the questions we receive from clients and prospective clients all the time are, ?what is the difference between the various types of intellectual property??? ?Is a trademark intellectual property?? ?What is the difference between a trademark and a copyright??? ?What is the difference between a patent and a trademark?? ?What is the difference between a patent and a copyright??? Today, we?re going to have a little bit of an intellectual property primer and we?re going to talk a little bit about the differences between various forms of intellectual property and, in fact, what is intellectual property.? Today, we?re going to be dealing with a very broad topic of IP.
Now, if you go to the Wikipedia entry, you?ll see a great rendition of information about intellectual property.? Essentially, intellectual property talks a lot about the exclusive rights that are granted to a person or a company to something that is intangible.? So, when you think about intellectual property, you?re always thinking about this concept of exclusive rights.? In addition, exclusive rights are important because what you?re doing is you?re trying to figure out why this is important.? And the reason it?s important is because when someone has exclusive rights, they?re the only one in the world that gets to use that idea, that name, that brand, that piece of artwork, that photograph, so we?re always dealing with the concept of exclusive rights in dealing with intellectual property.? Moreover, bundled with that exclusive right, which goes to the owner, is the concept that you can license your intellectual property and, more importantly, that you can stop people from using your intellectual property if they do not have permission. Thus, you can send them a trademark infringement threat letter, a copyright infringement threat letter or a patent infringement threat letter.
Let?s talk a little bit about intellectual property law and what that seeks to convey.? Again, intellectual property law seeks to convey exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets.? By intangible assets, we mean something that cannot be touched.? So, for instance, if I have a shoe company and I?m manufacturing shoes, I?d have a tangible asset, the shoe.? But if I idea, then I have an intangible piece of property.? If I have a name that goes with my product, a brand, then that is an intangible asset.? So, there are different types of intangible assets and thus, there are different types of intangible property.? Some types of intangible property deal with copyrights and if we take a look at some of the first examples here of music, literary and artistic works, these are intellectual property rights that are going to be governed by copyright law.? When we look at discoveries and inventions, we are going to be talking about patents and trade secrets, both different types of intellectual property.? If we?re going to be talking about words, phrases, symbols and designs, we?re in the area of law known as trademark law. Trademarks are a type of intellectual property which protect and provide exclusive rights to the use of a word, a phrase, a symbol or design.? The Nike swoosh is a trademark of the Nike Corporation and only Nike can use that swoosh.? American Airlines is the name of an airline company.? It is a word and only American Airlines can use that word.
So, these are the types of things that we call IP (intellectual property).? Today, we?re going to be talking a little bit about a particular type of intellectual property and that is trademark intellectual property.? So, trademark intellectual property is going to be the type of intellectual property that deals with words, phrases, brands, slogans, these types of things.? So, let?s start out by talking a little bit about what is a trademark.
A trademark is something that is going to designate goods or services in the market, so that if you are going by the company name Traverse Legal, people know when they go and see a designation of a website as Traverse Legal, or another use of the word Traverse Legal that they?re dealing with my law firm.? So, Traverse Legal is, in fact, a trademark.? There are lots of trademarks out there.? Everyone who, in fact, uses a brand or a company name is in all likelihood using a trademark.? So, trademark is something that is distinctive.? And by distinctive what we mean is that it?s going to be something that is going to be unique identifier for you.? And a distinctive mark is something different than a generic mark.? So, if I say I?m going to run a tool company and I?m going to sell tools and I named my company ?tools?, that?s not distinctive.? If I?m going to run a tool company and call it Geronimo, that is distinctive, so a brand has to be distinctive in order to have trademark rights.? And it is going to be used by an individual a business, an organization or some other legal entity to identify products or services (goods or services) in the market.? So, it?s going to tell consumers who you are, and it?s going to give consumers confidence to know when they buy something from you, they, in fact, are dealing with you.
So, we?ve got different types of trademarks.? If it?s a common law trademark and you?re not registered yet, you can use the TM designation to say I?m claiming this word as my trademark.? If you are providing services as opposed to selling goods, you can use the SM designation.? And once you get registered with the trademark office, you can use the circle ?, which not only tells someone that you?re claiming a trademark, but also that it is registered and you are going to protect it to the nth degree.
A trademark can be a word or a name, it can be phrase or a slogan, it can be a design or a logo or an image, and all these things can be protected as trademarks. And, of course, if you own a trademark and someone is using something that is confusingly similar, the owner of the trademark can sue for trademark infringement, can send a threat letter alleging trademark infringement, this type of activity is very, very common.? So, obviously, there are lots of trademarks out there and many of them are very familiar to all of us. So, if we get into this little image here, you?ll recognize a lot of these trademarks, right?? You?ve got Coca-Cola, you?ve got Christian Dior, you?ve got Google, these companies have the exclusive right to use these names, these words and the designs that you?re seeing here in commerce and no one can use something that?s confusingly similar.
Keep in mind that trademarks are protected beyond the literal word or the literal design; it really is anything that it is similar.? So, if you were to take a look at Levi?s here.? If you were to start a jean company and use a red logo that was vertical that used this block style of letters, even if you picked a different word altogether, you might be the subject of a threat letter for trademark infringement from Levi.? If you?re software or hardware vendor and you used an Intel type logo or deign for your brand, you might get a threat letter, even if you pick a different company.? And if you are Canon and you?re in the photography and printer business and someone else tries to register a trademark or use a trademark that is Cannon or Cannin, you?re probably going to get a trademark infringement threat letter because trademarks are broader than the actual use of the word and the actual design; they protect around designs.
So, at www.traverselegal.com, we?ve got a lot of information about trademarks.? We encourage you to go to our website and take a look around.? We have everything there that you need to know in order to determine how to register a trademark, to understand what a trademark is, and how to protect or license your trademark.
The key items that I want you to take away for today are that IP (intellectual property) contains a lot of different elements, but if you have intellectual property, whether a copyright, a patent,? a trade secret or a trademark, you have the exclusive right to use that in commerce.? That means you can stop other people from using things that are, in fact, similar.? The other concept I want you to take away today is that a trademark is a name, a phrase, a symbol or design that designates who you are and tells the world your name.? You need to protect it and you need to establish it; you need to grow it as an asset.
My name is Trademark and Intellectual Property Attorney Enrico Schaefer and we will see you next time.? Have a great day!
