The study of the paranormal ? Yesterday and Today

Paranormal investigation was the 19th Century with the founding of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR) is performed. Most of the procedures performed in these days, are still found today in the paranormal investigations. Would members of the SPR to interview witnesses, collect information and keep well organized records of every incident. There was, however, EMF detectors, EVP recordings, or other electrical device you've seen Ghost Huntingor the use of modern researchers of the paranormal. The use of technology is gradually found a way into the paranormal field in the last century.

The first individual who was using the state of the art in a paranormal investigation, someday, a member of the same SPR in 1920. Harry Price would use during his study of spectral devices like a camera with film, to captures images of phenomena, electronic bells, which were used as a movementDetectors and measuring instruments, bows and tape is very similar with the help of modern ghost hunters. Although many are skeptical of his work and he also suspected of fraud, it seemed to the foundation of where modern paranormal investigations from developed to create.

The next technological step is performed, in which they have helped the modern paranormal investigation took place in 1959, when Frederick Gurgenson Phenomena discovered while he was on the tapeRecording bird songs. He began to do a lot of recordings and later wrote a couple of books called Voices from the Universe, and Breakthrough. The discovery of the giant Gurgenson there are websites, books, associations, and very dedicated sound phenomena.

The sparks that seemed to push the technology even more paranormal research occurred in 1980. And success in two parts. First, the movie "Ghost Busters", the moreinspired the use of technology in paranormal investigation and study. He brought the idea that a spirit can be detected and identified themselves with the right technical equipment. We do not yet know how or even if a ghost can be captured effectively, but we believe that we can detect the ghost with the use of the electromagnetic field and the search for unusual places cold with non-contact temperature measurement devices, which brings us to second part. At the end of the technology of 80 years began to passPoint where many people were able to use their own technological equipment they could afford to use their paranormal investigations.

Ghost Hunting has now grown very popular. They are all kinds of tools people use for paranormal investigations. Some of the tools I have not mentioned yet are the electrostatic generator, tone generator, infrared and motion detectors. The final push to the recent rise of interest is the paranormal documentaries andTV shows that are on the hunt for the ghosts and the paranormal. This growing interest in the benefits to the community in which the paranormal is likely to further discoveries may be of the paranormal surface. The main goal is to make the paranormal (should be) available for examination, he was groping about paranormal mysteries that are part of our world to learn.

Climate change threatens Yellowstone region: report (Reuters)

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) ? A warming climate is imperiling the iconic wildlife and landscapes in the Yellowstone National Park region, two environmental groups said in a study.

The report by Rocky Mountain Climate Organization and Greater Yellowstone Coalition released on Tuesday shows temperatures in the past decade in the Yellowstone area have exceeded the rate of warming worldwide compared to the 20th Century average.

Left unchecked, climate change is likely to transform the greater Yellowstone area, which includes parts of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana and encompasses two national parks, six national forests and three wildlife refuges, the report said.

The Yellowstone National Park region is one of the world's last largely intact temperate ecosystems.

The Greater Yellowstone Coalition is a conservation organization that works to protect the lands, waters and wildlife of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. The Rocky Mountain Climate Organization is a nonprofit working to reduce climate disruption and its impact on the interior West.

Warming in the area could increase the frequency and severity of wildfires, strip forests of moisture-dependent trees such as aspen, lower water in mountain streams with world-class trout fisheries and damage areas vital to threatened species such as grizzly bears, the study suggests.

"Threads are already being pulled out of the glorious tapestry that is the greater Yellowstone ecosystem and it has lost some of its luster," said Stephen Saunders, president of the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization and a lead author of the report. "It's up to us to preserve this marvelous, magical place for future generations."

A worst-case projection shows summertime temperatures at Yellowstone National Park soaring by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit by 2099, according to an analysis in the report of government weather data and modeling by top climate scientists.

"That would mean future summers as hot as the Los Angeles metropolitan area have been in recent years," Saunders said in a telephone news conference.

Sweltering summers and dry winters would be devastating to already ailing alpine trees such as whitebark pines, which produce nuts crucial for grizzlies, and rare, snow-dependent animals such as the Canada lynx, said Saunders, former deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Interior Department.

The report, which relied on peer-reviewed research by government and university scientists, should serve as a wake-up call about the Yellowstone area, said Scott Christensen, climate director with the Montana-based Greater Yellowstone Coalition and co-author of the study.

Failing to reverse the trend could damage the region's $700 million annual tourism economy, the authors said.

Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron

WASHINGTON, September 27, 2011 - The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA), its founding members and several community partners are the recipients of a national $500,000 award to fund the Accountable Care Community (ACC) initiative, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced today. ACC is a collective effort aiming to create a healthier community and lessen the burden of disease in the Akron region. The funding is part of a multimillion dollar CDC Community Transformation Program that supports public health efforts to reduce chronic diseases, promote healthier lifestyles, reduce health disparities, and control health care spending.

ABIA -- an unique collaboration of Akron Children's Hospital, Akron General Health System, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Summa Health System, The University of Akron and John S. and James L. Knight Foundation -- is the lead institution on the community grant and will collaborate with all of its founding members on the effort along with community partners, including Summit County Health District and Community Legal Aid Services. The ACC effort, focused on improving the community's health status and health care delivery while lessening the burden of disease, was launched at a national summit held in Akron in June.

"Through our collective efforts, we continue to establish Akron as an epicenter for patient-centered innovation and commercialization. Once again, we are receiving national recognition and support for the transformational power of our community's shared vision to create a healthier and more competitive region," said Dr. Frank L. Douglas, ABIA president and chief executive officer. "The work of this initiative, and that of our founding members, is moving us to improve lives and the productivity of our community."

The project is striving to focus all Akron-area public, private and philanthropic resources toward achieving improvements in population health and to closing gaps in health care delivery, through aligned or coordinated efforts and pioneering approaches. It focuses on chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, asthma and hypertension.

"The enthusiasm and dedication of those involved in this initiative is tremendous," said Dr. Janine E. Janosky, Vice President of ABIA's Center for Clinical and Community Health Improvement (CCCHI), and leader of the ACC initiative. "We are pleased to have more than 60 organizations involved in this effort. Through the ACC, we are gathering a group of health providers who currently engage in disease prevention and health promotion, provide access and coordinate care, and manage chronic diseases. These professionals come from nearly every community outpost that may affect the health of individual residents of the Akron area. When completed the ACC will not only mean a healthier Akron region, but will be replicable to communities across the country."

The grant's funded efforts include fostering of community health leadership development; investigation of regional health programs; analysis of health policy areas including the areas of tobacco-free living, active lifestyles and healthy eating; and identifying the areas of greatest need in Summit County.

The initiative's steering committee continues to develop a community blueprint to guide Akron's development of an ACC that will further expand the efficiency of budgets and resources, and develop research to improve health through community and practice-based interventions.

Utility finds 3 more natural gas leaks in Seattle (AP)

SEATTLE ? Utility crews have found three more natural gas leaks in the north Seattle neighborhood where a home exploded, injuring two residents in a two-alarm fire.

The pipes have been dug up for repair, Puget Sound Energy spokeswoman Martha Monfried said Tuesday.

More than two dozen utility employees were using sniffer equipment to sweep the area within five miles of Monday's blast.

David Ingham, one of the two people injured in the explosion and fire has been released from the hospital, Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said Tuesday. Ingham's wife, Hong, remains in serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Damage from the blast is estimated at $350,000, Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said.

Puget Sound Energy said the leaks were apparently caused by electrical arcing initiated when a tree knocked down a high-voltage power line Sunday.

The utility has 750,000 natural gas customers in five counties.

UFC 135: Did Koscheck end Hughes? career with first-round TKO?

UFC 135: Did Koscheck end Hughes? career with first-round TKO?

It's been a rough 18 months for the UFC's building blocks. Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture are now retired after suffering bad knockouts in their final fights. Now Matt Hughes may have to join them after falling badly against Josh Koscheck as the victim of a first-round knockout at UFC 135 in Denver.

Just Liddell like did in his final fight against Rich Franklin, Hughes was more than holding his own against the younger Koscheck. But when older fighters get popped with a good shot, they can't take it like they used to.

[Related: Complete UFC 135 recap]

Hughes landed some good shots and targeted Koscheck's right eye with some good jabs, but everything turned when he absorbed some nasty right hands in the final minute of the round. Hughes hit the floor in the final seconds. Koscheck jumped on top and poured it on. He landed two big hammer fists with five seconds left and Hughes went limp.

UFC 135: Did Koscheck end Hughes? career with first-round TKO?Hughes wouldn't commit to retiring, but appeared both emotional and really frustrated during his postfight conversation with UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

"I'm not retiring," Hughes said. "I'm going to tell the UFC to put me up on shelf and we'll see what happens after that."

This makes it two straight first-round KO or TKO losses for Hughes, the UFC Hall of Famer and two-time former champ. He lost to B.J. Penn in just 21 seconds at UFC 123.

[Related: Jones defends light heavyweight title in convincing fashion]

Koscheck (16-5, 14-5 UFC) is one of the bigger villains in the sport, so Hughes got a huge ovation from the fans at the Pepsi Center. If this was his last fight, he got a great sendoff in his record 26th appearance in the Octagon.

"I loved the crowd support when I came out," said Hughes.

Koscheck talked a lot of trash before the fight claiming that Hughes had been ducking him for years, but he was nothing but respectful after the victory.

"Thanks to Matt Hughes for taking this fight late in his career. He's a legend. I'm really happy that I had the opportunity to fight a legend like Matt Hughes," said Koscheck.

[Related: After yet another thorough win, can anybody stop Jon Jones?]

Hughes was the UFC welterweight champ on two separate occasions from 2001-06, piling up a 12-1 record during that period.

This was a must win for Koscheck, since he had everything to lose. Koscheck dropped a title shot against Georges St-Pierre, the current UFC 170-pound champion back in April. He had the orbital bone around his right eye broken. Koscheck went on the shelf for three months and had to limit all physical activity. He was targeting Nov. 19 for his return when he got the call less than three weeks ago to fill in for Diego Sanchez against Hughes on this card.

"It was actually nice being on shelf. I got to focus on other areas. I'm growing as a person and as a fighter," said Koscheck.

The upside of economic worries: Lower gas prices (AP)

NEW YORK ? Soaring gasoline prices are in the rearview mirror.

For the first time in months, retail gasoline prices have fallen below $3 a gallon in places, including parts of Michigan, Missouri and Texas. And the relief is likely to spread thanks to a sharp decline in crude-oil prices.

The national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.51 per gallon, down from a high of $3.98 in early May. Last week's plunge in oil prices could push the average to $3.25 per gallon by November, analysts say.

Economist Philip Verleger equates it to "a stimulus program for consumers," leaving them more money for clothes, dinners out and movies. Over a year, a 50 cents-per-gallon drop in gasoline prices would add roughly $70 billion to the U.S. economy.

Arthur De Villar, a 48-year-old safety inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration, paid $2.96 for gasoline near his home in Manchester, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis ? and he recently replaced his SUV with a four-door sedan.

With three boys at home between the ages of 11 and 14, the money De Villar saves on gas still gets spent. But it goes to the amusement park, a Cardinals baseball game or the movie theater.

"It's far better to be able to put (the money) anywhere other than in the gas tank," he says.

Prices for oil, gasoline and other commodities dove last week along with world stock markets over concerns the global economy is headed for another recession. When economies slow, demand for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel falls as drivers cut back on trips, shippers move fewer goods and vacationers stay closer to home. Oil fell to $79.85 per barrel Friday, a drop of 9 percent for the week. Oil reached a three-year high of $113.93 on April 29.

Economists caution that gasoline savings, while welcome, won't matter much to people if the worst economic fears come to pass.

"Yes it produces some relief, your bill at the gas pump goes down, but it's going down because there are worries that people won't have jobs," says James Hamilton, an economics professor at the University of California, San Diego. "The news has not been good."

And gasoline prices remain historically high. Gasoline has averaged $3.56 this year, the highest yearly average ever. Americans have cut back driving in the face of high prices, but they are likely to spend more on gasoline in 2011 than ever before ? close to $490 billion, according to Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Kloza says the latest drop in prices will stick around through most of the fall. And while that may only add $20 a month to a typical commuter's wallet, drivers say it matters.

Pat Wolf, 60, a retired information technology professional from East Lansing, Mich. responded with a "Holy Mackerel!" when he got a text from his wife Friday morning that said a station nearby was selling gas for $2.98 per gallon.

Wolf said prices in the area were $3.49 earlier in the week and he had no hope that they'd fall below $3. "It's one other thing in the back of your mind if you are deciding whether to buy some gizmo or other," he says.

Aureleano Duran, a house painter in Dallas, gave the cashier at a RaceTrac gas station $55 to fill up his red Dodge pickup Friday night, but the tank began to overflow before he shut off the nozzle ? at $49.21. Duran plans to sock away roughly $30 a week in gas savings. "I'm trying not to spend a lot of it," he said. Then he excused himself: "I've got to go get my change."

Gasoline prices have always varied from state to state, but the gap now is especially big. Drivers along the coasts are paying significantly more than drivers in the middle of the country, analysts say. California drivers are paying the highest average price in the lower 48 states, at $3.89 per gallon on Sunday. Missouri drivers are paying the least, $3.21 per gallon, according to AAA, OPIS and Wright Express.

Differences in state taxes explain much of the gap. Another factor is that most of the oil used by refineries on the coasts comes from overseas, making it far more expensive than oil piped to refineries in the middle of the country from places such as North Dakota and Canada. The coastal refineries must compete with the growing economies of Asia for shipments of oil.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy.com, says that while he expects the national average to fall to between $3.25 and $3.50 between now and Thanksgiving, some areas could hit $2.50. He says prices in Lansing, Mich., and St. Louis had fallen below $3 already. A price war between filling stations near Bridge City, Texas, pushed prices to $2.62 last week.

"In some of these areas prices are collapsing," DeHaan says.

The trend could reverse, analysts say, if the world economy does not descend into recession. That's because the growth in oil demand from China and other developing nations will more than make up for falling demand in Europe and the United States.

The investment bank Goldman Sachs forecasts that oil will rise to $120 per barrel within the next six months. That's a jump of 50 percent from last week's closing price of just under $80 per barrel.

"Whatever we see gas prices falling to, it won't be the new normal. It will be a launching pad for winter and spring prices," says Kloza, from Oil Price Information Service.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama charged Sunday that the GOP vision of government would "fundamentally cripple America," as he tried out his newly combative message on the liberal West Coast.

Aiming to renew the ardor of Democratic loyalists who have grown increasingly disenchanted with him, the president mixed frontal attacks on Republicans with words of encouragement intended to buck up the faithful as the 2012 campaign revs up.

"From the moment I took office what we've seen is a constant ideological pushback against any kind of sensible reforms that would make our economy work better and give people more opportunity," the president said at an intimate brunch fundraiser at the Medina, Wash., home of former Microsoft executive Jon Shirley.

About 65 guests were paying $35,800 per couple to listen to Obama at the first of seven fundraisers he was holding from Seattle to Hollywood to San Diego on Sunday and Monday. The three-day West Coast swing, ending Tuesday in Denver, offered him the chance to try to reassure some of his most liberal and deep-pocketed supporters.

The trip comes as Obama has shifted from focusing on compromise with Republicans on Capitol Hill to calling out House Speaker John Boehner and others by name. The president has criticized them as obstructionists while demanding their help in passing his $447 billion jobs bill.

The revamped approach is a relief to Democratic activists fed up by what they viewed as the president's ceding of ground to the GOP on tax cuts and other issues while the economy has stalled and unemployment is stuck above 9 percent.

Obama said 2012 would be an especially tough election because people are discouraged and disillusioned with government, but he also said he was determined because so much is at stake.

The GOP alternative, Obama said, is "an approach to government that will fundamentally cripple America in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. And that's not the kind of society that I want to leave to Malia and Sasha."

Obama got a friendly welcome from invited guests at his first stop. But elsewhere liberal activists were making plans to greet the president with demonstrations criticizing his policies or reminding him they want him to do more.

"We want to see Obama stand up as strongly as he can to fight for the people of this country who are working out there to make ends meet," said Kathy Cummings, communications director for the Washington State Labor Council. The council was helping organize a demonstration outside Seattle's Paramount Theater, the site of an Obama fundraiser later Sunday.

Obama and the Republican presidential candidates are working overtime to raise campaign cash ahead of an important Sept. 30 reporting deadline that will give a snapshot of their financial strength. Obama's West Coast visit was heavy on fundraisers: two each in Seattle and the San Francisco area Sunday, followed by one in San Diego on Monday and two in Los Angeles.

He's meeting with the Silicon Valley and Hollywood elite, including an event Sunday night in Atherton, Calif., at the home of Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg.

The expected haul from all seven events: $4 million or more.

In addition to the fundraising, Obama scheduled a town hall-style event Monday in Silicon Valley, hosted by social networking company LinkedIn. The trip ends Tuesday with a speech to supporters in Denver, where he accepted the Democratic nomination three years ago.

Obama was pushing throughout for his job proposal, which combines tax cuts, unemployment benefits and public works spending. The bill faces a hostile reception on Capitol Hill, particularly because Obama wants to pay for it with tax increases opposed by Republicans.

A top aide, David Plouffe, said the White House expects a vote in the Democratic-controlled Senate in October. Despite reservations even from some in the president's own party, "I think it's got a very good chance" of passing, he told ABC's "This Week" on Sunday.

If he can't persuade Congress to pass the bill, Obama has said he wants to make sure the public knows who's standing in the way.

Jobs are a major concern in California, where unemployment stands at 12.1 percent, highest of any state except Nevada.

Mark DiCamillo, director of California's Field Poll, said that's contributed to a softening of support for Obama among Democratic and independent voters. Obama's job approval rating dropped to 46 percent among Californians in a Field Poll this month. Among Democrats it was 69 percent, but that was down 10 percentage points from June.

"Californians voted for him by 24 points in 2008 and the Democrats and nonpartisans were the backbone of his support and he's losing some of that now," DiCamillo said. "I think there's a lot of frustration in California about Washington. ... They're looking for Obama to do something."

The summer's nasty debate over raising the government's borrowing limit turned off voters. Many liberals bemoaned the deal that cleared the way for a higher debt ceiling, with Obama agreeing to Republican demands for steep budget cuts without new taxes.

But Democratic supporters are heartened by the jobs plan and Obama's insistence that Congress must raise taxes to pay for it. Now they're hoping that the confrontational Obama they're seeing now is the same one they'll see through the 2012 campaign.

"We wish that his fighting spirit had been there a few months ago, but it's here now," said Rick Jacobs, head of the Courage Campaign, a progressive online organizing network in California.

Top 5 reasons your grandma will love paperless wedding invitations from Gl?

We've told you all about Gl? paperless invites before, now here's Taryn, the founder of Gl?, to assuage you fears about the older generation when it comes to online invites.

So, you've decided that paperless wedding invitations are the way to go. After all, they're gorgeous, streamlined and eco-friendly ? what could be more modern-minded? Plus, you've got better things to do with your time besides ripping your hair out while you stuff and address envelopes, lick foul-tasting stamps and coordinate RSVPs by hand. You did not say "yes" to paper cuts on your tongue.

But now you wonder: "What in the hootenanny will I do about Grandma?"

The easy response is that you'll send email wedding invitations to 99% of your guests and a handful of matching paper invitations to Grandma and your other older relatives. You can always ask your parents or a well-meaning aunt to RSVP on Grandma's behalf on your wedding website.

But guess what, your Grandma might actually surprise you. A Gl?bie once told me that her 80+ year old Irish grandmother got an email address JUST to receive her email wedding invitations. How wicked-crazy-cool is that?

So in honor of cyber-grannies everywhere, I bring you the top 5 reasons why YOUR grandma will probably go gaga for your paperless wedding invitations:

Here's an example of a beautiful and personalized paperless invitation from Liz and Christina's Festival of Love!

1. They are beautiful and personalized

Even Grandma knows that paperless invitations have come a LONG way since e-vite. Check out some examples and see what I mean.

2. She'll get more time to spend with you

Let's be honest, you're super-freaking busy. Your life did not grind to a halt just because there is a wedding to plan. You can save countless hours by doing online invitations. Now those hours can go toward planning a killer menu, building a rock-a-biliy DJ list, or chillin' with Grandma on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

3. She'll get bragging rights about her tech-genius grandchild

After all, Grandma doesn't need to know that the slideshow, pac man game, video and countdown you added to your website required little more than cut, paste and click. Plus when Grandma calls ten minutes after you click send, she'll be flabbergasted that you already knew she had viewed your invitation. (What she WON'T know is how you've been jumping up and down like a madwoman and squeeing with glee as you reload your "who's viewed" and RSVP response pages over and over and over again.)

4. She'll be guilt-free

Grandma won't need to stress about calling you at 7am on a Sunday to tell you she spilled tea on your RSVP card. While you're snoring away like a banshee. Your database will record that she RSVPed "yes" for her and Grandpa, that they're staying at the main hotel, are allergic to nuts, won't need a babysitter, and request that the DJ play something catchy by those nice people from the village. If Grandma wants to come back another day and switch her dinner request to the curry, your database will seamlessly update her response while she continues to "not burden or bother you." Score.

5. Bigger bang for her birthday check bucks

There's nothing better than the check or crisp green $5 bill that falls out of grandma's birthday card. But when postage alone for 150 invitations and RSVP reply cards costs around $150, and the average couple spends hundreds on paper invitations, your savings account can dry up fast. Whether it goes towards extra food and wine, a killer DJ, or the pink pony you've wanted since you were five, Grandma will be pleased about the moolah you save on your paperless invitations and spend on something you really wanted instead.

Want to take Grandma a step farther into the techno-fabulous word? Just get her involved! She can help you choose a gorgeous Gl? design or serve as art director if you decide to create and upload your own design. You two can even spend some bonding time looking over a few real Gl?-bie stories or discovering ways to
spice up your site.

Just don't be surprised when Grandma asks why she hasn't seen you on Twitter lately, invites you fan her Facebook page, or proudly announces she's the mayor of Thursday night bingo. After Grandma masters the double-click and two-fingered swipe, there'll be just no stopping her. And now there'll be no stopping you ? get amazing paperless wedding invites from Gl?!

401k study: Help can improve performance by 3 pct. (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Sometimes it pays to get help. A new study of 401(k) accounts provides further evidence that workers who get help pocket higher returns than those handling their own investment choices.

The study by human resources consultant Aon Hewitt and investment adviser Financial Engines shows that workers who received some form of help experienced annual returns on average of 3 percent better than workers who handled their own accounts.

But it's important to clarify what's meant by "help." Workers who used target-date mutual funds, professionally managed accounts or accessed online advice were all deemed to have used help for purposes of this study. Their behavior from 2006 through 2010, and how it affected account risks and returns, was studied.

Target-date funds automatically set the mix of stocks and bonds according to a worker's risk tolerance and years until retirement. Managed accounts are those with professional manager so the accountholder doesn't have to make ongoing investment decisions.

Based on the returns estimated in the study, the difference that 3 percent could make over 20 years is striking. If two accountholders ? one who sought help and one who did not ? invested $10,000 at age 45, the person who got help could have $71,400 saved by age 65. That's 70 percent more than $42,100 of the worker who handled their own affairs.

The study looked at eight large 401(k) plans representing more than 425,000 individual participants with $25 billion in assets.

It should be noted that Financial Engines' services include managed accounts and advice services. Aon Hewitt offers companies retirement plan options including self-directed brokerage accounts and financial planning help services.

The difference in performance can be attributed to common mistakes made by 401(k) accountholders managing their own investments.

GETTING OUT

Getting scared and pulling money out of stocks when the market tumbles, and then failing to reinvest before the market recovers hurts many retirement investors. This behavior was very damaging in 2008, when the Standard & Poor's 500 index fell nearly 39 percent. Unfortunately many stayed out and missed the 26 percent recovery in 2009.

"When markets are as volatile as they are now there is a substantial opportunity to make some very bad mistakes," said Christopher Jones, chief investment officer for Financial Engines. "Particularly if you're a near retiree. That can be very damaging."

TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE RISK

Choosing an inappropriate level of risk for a worker's age and years until retirement is another common error. Leading up to the market collapse in 2008, many workers within five years of retirement carried too much risk, keeping a large portion of their money in stocks. When the market dropped, on average, 401(k) investors lost a third of their account balance. Those who were close to their planned retirement didn't have time to make up the losses and in many cases had to continue working.

Younger workers who are too cautious and shy away from stocks can cut their earning potential significantly over time.

COMPANY STOCK

Another common costly mistake is investing too much money in the employer's company stock, Jones said. Many workers believed their own company stock was less risky than other choices. When the market plunged in 2008, many of these stocks fell as much as 70 percent. This led to a devastating loss for heavily invested workers.

REBALANCING

Failure to periodically rebalance a portfolio can also hurt returns. By rebalancing, investors adjust the allocation between stocks and bonds in their portfolios to ensure their investments reflect their appetite for risk. For instance, in a market where stocks surge, a portfolio can become too heavily invested in stocks unless the accountholder moves some of that money from stock funds into bonds or other assets.

Failure to rebalance after a market surge or drop leaves a portfolio at risk to underperform.

COMPLACENCY

A large segment of 401(k) accountholders have historically been complacent about their investments, failing to do anything with their account for years.

"Rather than do something wrong they're just not doing anything," said Pamela Hess, director of retirement research at Aon Hewitt. "With all the volatility in the last few years, I think folks don't know what to do and a lot are just doing nothing."

More workers with 401(k) accounts are using some form of help, Hess said. An earlier study of 401(k) accounts indicated about 25 percent of workers used help with their investments in 2009. As of the end of 2010, about 30 percent of workers were using help.

Hess points out it, however, that still means about 70 percent of workers don't get help.

"This study really quantifies the fact that he gap between doing things on your own and what you can get with professional help does in fact get substantially wider during periods of volatility and economic stress," Jones said.

While acknowledging that some forms of help including managed accounts carry higher costs, Jones said the difference in performance outweighs the increased cost.

Managed account fees typically range from 0.20 percent to more than 1 percent of the account balance. Target-date fund fees can range from around 0.18 percent to more than 1.5 percent of assets.
