Linda Evangelista, Francois-Henri Pinault Settle Child Support Battle

Linda Evangelista and Francois-Henri Pinault have reached an agreement to end their contentious, public child support fight, their lawyers said Monday.

The supermodel and billionaire French businessman did not reveal the terms of their agreement, nor did their attorneys after the terms were struck.

“Everybody is very glad that it’s over,” Pinault lawyer David Aronson said.

The settlement came in the midst of a trial over how much, if anything, Pinault should pay toward the care of the former couple's 5-year-old son.

Pinault is the CEO of a company that owns Gucci, Yves St. Laurent and other top-flight fashion lines; he’s now married to actress Salma Hayek.

Both Pinault and Evangelista testified, answering questions that delved into her career, his high-flying finances and his relationship with the boy.

Linda Evangelista had been due to continue testifying yesterday.

The two sides negotiated all weekend and into Monday morning, following the start of the trial last week in which she made explosive allegations.

In legal papers, Evangelista had said she was spending $46,000 a month on armed bodyguards, a 24-hour-a-day nanny and other expenses.

He was born in 2006 after a four-month relationship. Francois-Henri Pinault said he and Evangelista spent only about seven days together in all.

Evangelista’s lawyer said she willingly paid all the child’s expenses at first, back when she was making seven figures, but she now needs help.

Attorney William Beslow said her roughly $1.8 million-a-year income sank last year because a major endorsement contract with L’Oreal ended.

“Ms. Evangelista is not looking to piggyback the lifestyle of Mr. Pinault,” Beslow said last week. He said she wasn’t asking for any particular amount.

As part of the family behind luxury-brands conglomerate PPR, Pinault makes about $4 million a year, and Forbes estimates his net worth at $13 billion.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

We're not sure exactly what the FBI's standard issue kit consists of, but we imagine it has more than a few bits of secret tech. These screen grabs from this week's Fringe, however, would have us believe that the rogue agents like to pick up their tabs with what looks like Google Wallet. We can clearly see a Sprint-branded Galaxy Nexus being used to for a not-so-undercover financial transaction. At least it looks like the agents might have had an upgrade since we last saw them around these parts.

[Thanks, Te-je]

LiveTweet (for PlayStation Vita)

The Sony PlayStation Vita ($299, 4 stars) has numerous apps, such as Netflix (Free, requires subscription from $7.99 per month, 3 stars), Paint Park (Free, 3 stars), and Skype (Free, 3.5 stars), that expand the handheld's scope beyond gaming?the free LiveTweet for PlayStation Vita also falls into that category. This lightweight Twitter client (the only one available on the platform at the time of this review) brings the 140-character social network to the PlayStation Vita without the bells and whistles of a full-fledged desktop app like Hootsuite, but its simple nature brings an ease of use that's excellent for mobile tweeting.

Starting the Conversation
You begin by downloading LiveTweet from the PSN marketplace and authorizing your Twitter account ?for PS Vita use. LiveTweet features a clean interface that's heavy on blue hues, much like Twitter.com itself. You're taken into your Twitter timeline after logging into the app, but can quickly jump to Mentions, Direct Messages, Lists, Trends, and Settings by tapping the appropriate icon in the left column.

Bringing a finger to the message icon in the upper left corner of the screen opens a box that lets you craft a new post, either a public tweet or a direct message. LiveTweet serves up a cool, visual representation of your 140-character limit with a bar that fills as you type. The app also offers a numerical character counter for those who prefer the traditional method.

The virtual keys, thankfully, are large enough to prevent tapping other letters by accident. That said, the placement of the PS Vita's twin analog sticks impeded how I'd naturally thumb-type. As such, I had to reposition my hands into an unnatural angle, which caused some strain during extended tweeting sessions.

Tweet Options
You can't retweet, reply, or read multi-person conversations within the timeline. Instead, you have to tap a tweet, which takes you to another screen that contains the retweet, reply, and conversation icons. Some will decry the extra step, but I liked this implementation, as is keeps the Twitter feed clean. In fact, favorite-ing tweets is the only action you can perform from within the Twitter feed.

LiveTweet lets you attach images stored on your PS Vita, or snap photos with the PS Vita's cameras. You can also pull up a list of trending hashtags (for quick insertion), or people you follow for swiftly inserting their handles into a tweet. You cannot, however, add extra columns or set up a second account. The former prevents you from having a stream dedicated to, say, a particular hashtag of interest. The latter, unfortunately, keeps you from tweeting under multiple handles?a limitation in an age where some users tweet under both personal and professional handles.

Something to Talk About
LiveTweet is currently the only PlayStation Vita Twitter client, which makes it the platform's best by default (you could use the awful PS Vita browser to check Twitter, but I wouldn't recommend it). That, however, is no knock on its quality. LiveTweet does mobile tweeting extremely despite my personal grip issues. I would like multiple Twitter account support, but even as is LiveTweet for PlayStation Vita is a very solid Twitter app.

E-Commerce Business Models ? The Competitive Edge ...

E-Commerce Business Models ? The Competitive Edge

Every day more and more companies, both large and small are attempting to capitalize on their existing capabilities through the use of the internet. This process of leveraging strengths and disturbing habits of the tried and true underlies the migration from ?market place to market space?.?

There are many who still believe that there is no profitable business on the web.? Value to the customer and company are the only two ways of being?successful.? This means a company must understand their customers within the?time frame and context to achieve their business objective.? The internet?gives companies a change to do what they have always done, but in a much?different fashion, further adding value to the business and customer.

There are many business strategies that take advantage of the internet as an?interactive medium to reach many and emphasize communication and community.

Three business models that are working quite successfully for some companies are the auction model, portal model and storefront model.

This article will explore the?three business models.? After reading this? article, you should then be able to determine which business model is most?conducive for operating and growing your business.

The auction model has gained popularity since the inception of e-Bay.

Auction models are those in which the participants bid for products or?services over the internet.? The auction sites sometimes do not own the?products on its site, but facilitates the process of listing and displaying?goods as an affiliate.

Auction models are a marketplace for individuals and businesses to auction?off merchandise or service.??In English auctions, the initial price starts low and is bid up by?successive bidders with the highest bidder winning the bid.? In a Dutch?auction, multiple, identical items are offered in one auction, with all?winning bidders paying the same price, usually the highest price at which all?items will be sold.? Most auctions online currently use the English method.?? (Nissanoff, 2006)?

The advantages of the auction business model include:

No time constraints.? Bidding and posting of items can be completed 24/7.
No geographical constraints.? Sellers and bidders can participate from anywhere in the world.
The large number of bidders.? The potential for low prices, numerous items and services available, easy access, and the social benefit draws a large number of bidders.
Large number of sellers.? The number of bidders brings a potential for high price and reduced selling costs making more sellers choose the auction model.
Network economics.? The more sellers, the more bidders and this cycle continue.? The more the spiral operates, the larger the system becomes, making the business model more valuable for all participants.

The main source of revenue for the auction business model is through?commissions from items sold on their site, advertising and posting?merchandise fees.

Generally speaking, the portal business model is an ?infomediary.? A portal?brings sellers and buyers together by providing content in the form of advice, services, or some other benefit.?

A portal is the gateway for users when they connect to the internet.? Portal?business models provide services such as: latest news, online directories,?personalized advertisements, targeted e-mail newsletters of products and?services and a facility to create an individual company website within the?pain portal making the portal a major commerce facilitator by adding a value?to a particular e-business transaction.

The revenues for portal business model is earned by personalized advertising,?hosting websites, building, designing websites, sponsoring discussion forums?and negotiating a percentage of each transaction that takes place on the?marketplace.

The store front business model is a shopping location that customers can?browse and shop from the comfort of their homes, and where businesses can?advertise their products and services for a fraction of the cost of brick and?mortar businesses.?

The store is entered through a portal or the direct website and upon entering?the store; the customer is shown graphic displays to give a person the chance?to see what the product looks like, just as if he/she were standing in the brick and mortar store.? Once the purchase is made, a form is filled out that will transmit the financial information and issue a receipt to the customer.?

Three types of storefront models are ?hard good, soft goods and services.?? Hard goods are similar to operating catalog sales online.? Selling soft goods or information based goods is perfect for the internet because everything can?be completed and received on the internet.?

Some companies use the storefront models to sell goods, such as e-Bay, others use it to?reduce costs through marketing and customer support, and then others use it?to generate new sales.?Companies that really benefit from a storefront model are those that sell?unique products that are either hard to find or cannot be found in the local?area.?

The advantages to a storefront model includes extended sales and marketing, reduced transaction costs, new product introduction and testing and the?ability to reach specialized markets.

With more than 90 million users on the web; the internet is a fascinating?place to do business.? There are vast variations of companies doing business?on the web.? large, small, or in between, it doesn?t matter because it all?comes to customer commitment.

Dell to upgrade unshipped Alienware orders to Ivy Bridge CPUs for free

Dell to upgrade unshipped Alienware orders to Ivy Bridge CPUs for free

Are you among the Alienware buyers who plunked down cold, hard cash for a new M14X, M17X, or M18X preceding the launch of Ivy Bridge, but can't stomach the thought of being stuck with Intel's second gen CPUs? Good news, gaming friends, because if your laptop was ordered, but hasn't yet shipped, Dell's doing you a solid by upgrading the chip automatically for you. Best part is, the company will swap in "comparably-priced" new silicon for free, which leaves you to spend your money elsewhere to prep for your forthcoming Diablo III launch party.

Demi Lovato: Confirmed for The X Factor?

The i's may not be dotted, nor the t's crossed, but a new report claims Demi Lovato is pretty much confirmed as a judge on season two of The X Factor.

With names being tossed about haphazardly over the past few months, sources claimed this week that the fourth panel spot - alongside Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and $15 million-per-year newbie Britney Spears - had come down to Lovato and Miley Cyrus.

And, if the following E! News item is to be believed, Demi has beat out her fellow young star:

No contract has been signed still, apparently, but that doesn't mean we can't express our take on the possibility: it will be great for ratings, bad for credibility.

The judges are meant to guide the contestants, after all, right? Offer them advice based on their years in the industry? Seems difficult for a 19-year old to do.

What is your opinion? Would Lovato make a strong X Factor judge?
