LG Marquee (Boost Mobile)

Boost Mobile has a number of good smartphones, but they all seem to lack a certain wow factor. The $279.99 LG Marquee probably won't make anyone cancel their current contract and rush over to Boost, but its exceptionally bright, rich display delivers a bit more wow than anything else on Boost right now. It's also an all-around great smartphone, so it earns our Editors' Choice award.

Design, Screen, and Call Quality
A good deal of the Marquee's appeal lies with its design. The phone measures 4.8 by 2.5 by 0.36 inches (HWD) and weighs just 3.95 ounces, so it's thin, light, and comfortable to hold. It's made entirely of black plastic, with a glass screen. The Marquee's 4-inch, 480-by-800-pixel NOVA capacitive touch display looks fantastic. It uses IPS LCD technology, just like the acclaimed Retina display on the iPhone 4S. But the Marquee is even brighter than the iPhone. LG claims the Marquee is capable of 700 nits of brightness, while the iPhone has been measured at 541 nits. The iPhone 4S still looks sharper, but the Marquee definitely looks just as bright. Viewing angles are excellent, and the Marquee is especially readable outdoors. This phone shames all the other smartphone displays currently available on Boost.

The Marquee is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It connected to my WPA2-encrypted Wi-Fi network without issue. Reception is average and call quality is good overall. Voices sound warm and full in the earpiece, but volume is on the low side, and maximum volume actually causes the phone's case to rattle. Calls made with the phone sound clear, provided there isn't too much sound in the background, as noise cancellation is poor. Calls sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and voice dialing worked fine. The speakerphone goes loud enough to use outdoors, but voices sound harsh and distorted at maximum volume. Battery life was fine at 5 hours, 40 minutes of talk time.

Last October, Boost began charging an additional $5 monthly for its unlimited data and messaging services on Android-powered devices like the Marquee. That means plans now start at $55, which are reduced by $5 every 6 months you pay your bill on time, down to $40. Considering that Boost uses Sprint's nationwide network, these are pretty incredible prices, since the same unlimited plan on Sprint costs $99.99 per month.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The Marquee is powered by a 1GHz TI OMAP3630 Cortex-A8 processor and Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). There's no word yet on whether the phone will receive an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). LG has left the OS almost completely untouched, so what you're getting here is nearly a stock version of Android. Mobile ID is installed, which lets you customize your device with downloadable theme packs from Boost that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets.

The Marquee didn't set our benchmark tests on fire, but it demonstrated perfectly acceptable numbers for a midrange Android device. The single-core processor isn't built for high-end gaming, but it should be able to handle most anything else you throw at it. Otherwise, the Marquee is a fairly standard Android phone with all the usual features, including a powerful WebKit browser with Flash support, GPS with free Google Maps Navigation for voice-enabled, turn by turn directions, and access to the Android Market, which features over 300,000 third-party apps.

There's a microSD?card?slot underneath the battery cover, which comes preloaded with a 2GB card; my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well. There's also a surprisingly spacious 2.79GB of free internal storage. Music sounded good through both a pair of wired earbuds as well as Altec Lansing BackBeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to listen to AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA files, but FLAC was a no-go.

All of the video files I tried played back smoothly in full screen at resolutions up to 720p. Unfortunately, while audio was fine through a pair of earbuds, there was a significant delay when using Bluetooth headphones.

The Marquee's 5-megapixel auto-focus camera includes an LED flash. Test photos look good, with average detail, though colors look a touch dull. Recorded 720p (1280-by-720-pixel) videos look good and play back smoothly at 24 frames per second indoors or out. There's also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.

The LG Marquee is one of the best prepaid smartphones out there and the best smartphone available from Boost Mobile right now, so it gets our Editors' Choice. Our previous Editors' Choice, the Samsung Galaxy Prevail?($149.99, 4 stars), is less expensive, but has a smaller, lower-resolution display, slower hardware, and a less impressive camera than the Marquee. The ZTE Warp?($199.99, 3.5 stars) is also less expensive, but has a poor camera and a far less attractive display. The Motorola Triumph?for Virgin Mobile ($279.99, 4 stars) has many of the same features as the Marquee, but for the same price, the Marquee has a better video camera and brighter display. There's also the Huawei Mercury?($179.99, 4.5 stars) on Cricket, which is our favorite prepaid phone available right now. It too has an excellent display, along with a faster processor than the Marquee. In most of the country, it also uses Sprint's network just like the Marquee does. You'll be happy with either one.

From shipwreck in Italy, a treasure now beckons (AP)

ROME ? In the chaotic evacuation of the Costa Concordia, passengers and crew abandoned almost everything on board the cruise ship: jewels, cash, champagne, antiques, 19th-century Bohemian crystal glassware and thousands of art objects, including 300-year-old woodblock prints by a Japanese master.

Now, a veritable treasure lies beneath the pristine Italian waters where the luxury liner ran aground last month.

Though some objects are bound to disintegrate, there is still hoard enough to tempt treasure seekers ? just as the Titanic and countless shipwrecks before have lured seekers of gold, armaments and other riches for as far back as mankind can remember.

It may be just a matter of time before treasure hunters set their sights on the sunken spoils of the Costa Concordia, which had more than 4,200 people on board.

"As long as there are bodies in there, it's considered off base to everybody because it's a grave," said Robert Marx, a veteran diver and the author of numerous books on maritime history, underwater archaeology and treasure hunting. "But when all the bodies are out, there will be a mad dash for the valuables."

The Mafia, he said, even has underwater teams that specialize in going after sunken booty.

The Costa Concordia was essentially a floating luxury hotel and many of the passengers embarked on the ill-fated cruise with their finest clothes and jewels so they could parade them in casinos and at gala dinners beneath towering chandeliered ceilings.

On top of that was the massive wealth belonging to the ship itself: elegant shops stocked with jewelry, more than 6,000 works of art decorating walls and a wellness spa containing a collection of 300-year-old woodblock prints by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese artist most famous for his work of a giant wave framing Mount Fuji in the distance.

"It's now a paradise for divers," said Hans Reinhardt, a German lawyer who represents 19 German passengers seeking compensation for their losses. He said some of his clients traveled with diamond-studded jewels and other heirlooms that had been in their families for generations.

"They lost lots of jewelry ? watches, necklaces, whatever women wear when they want to get well dressed," Reinhardt said. "They wanted to show off what they have."

The massive cruise liner itself is worth $590 million (euro450 million), but that doesn't take into account the value of all other objects on board, said Costa Crociere SpA, the Italian company that operated the Costa Concordia.

Among the sunken objects are furniture, a vast art collection, computers, wine, champagne, as well as whatever valuables were locked away in safes in private cabins, the Costa Crociere press office said.

"Quantifying this is impossible because unfortunately the ship has sunk," Costa Crociere said. "Until the ship is recovered there's no way to know what can be saved and what can't."

The company still legally owns the ship and the passengers own their sunken objects. So any treasure seekers would be breaking the law and subject to arrest ? and the looted objects subject to seizure, the Coast Guard said.

The ship ran aground off the Tuscan island of Giglio after the captain, Francesco Schettino, veered from his approved course, apparently to move closer to entertain passengers with a closer view of the island ? a common cruise ship practice. Schettino is now under house arrest, facing possible charges of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning ship before all passengers were evacuated. Seventeen people are confirmed dead in the Jan. 13 shipwreck, with 15 more still missing.

For now, the ship's wreckage has been impounded by authorities and is surrounded by rescue workers, cleanup crews and scientists monitoring its stability on the rocky perch where it ran aground. Civil Protection, the agency that is running the rescue effort, says there is so much activity surrounding it now that authorities don't see a risk of looting yet. It also says it plans to remove the wreckage before looters can reach it.

After the ship ran aground, authorities passed a decree preventing anyone from coming within a nautical mile of the wreck, a ruling that will be valid as long as the huge liner is still in place, the Coast Guard said.

"The ship is being guarded 24 hours a day. It's not possible to even get close," said Lt. Massimo Maccheroni, a Coast Guard official.

Civil Protection director Franco Gabrielli said recently that it could take seven to 10 months to remove the 950-foot-long (290 meter-long) ship once a contract is awarded for the job.

But Marx, whose 64 books include "Treasure Lost at Sea," says that divers inevitably make a dash for sunken loot, even at great risk, and that they treat shipwrecks as a free-for-all.

He estimates that it will take four to six months before a real treasure hunt will start ? in part because divers will want to avoid the rough winter sea. He said some divers will be put off because the ship is still shifting on the reef it collided into and is considered unstable.

But soon, treasure hunters will go. "Bright-eyed divers will want to make a fortune," Marx said.

Even now, there are those trying to make a profit off the disaster. On eBay, all sorts of trinkets related to the shipwreck have already come up for sale, from coat hangers and medallions embossed with the cruise liner's name to a Costa Concordia desk plan.

Marx said that everything that is pulled up from this now-infamous ship will have value, noting that even coal brought up from the Titanic, which sank 100 years ago, found eager buyers.

"Even the dishes, the crockery inside that ship ? that's going to be worth an absolute fortune," Marx said.

Reinhardt, the German lawyer, says his clients would love nothing more than to get back their cherished valuables, which often carry emotional value. But at this point they are merely counting on a cash settlement.

"They would prefer to get their original stuff," he said. "But they don't have hope."

This is the latest in an?ongoing guest series?brought to you by Southborough?s?Culinary Underground. This week Chef Lori shares suggestions on connecting with your kids in the kitchen, along with a recipe to get you started.

We all know how important it is to feed your kids healthy meals ? we?re bombarded with this message constantly. What is less pervasive is the emphasis on getting the family to sit down all together and actually eat that healthy meal together. The dinner table it the time to reconnect, to converse, and to teach the kids the niceties of social?etiquette. After all, how are you going to stress the importance of healthy eating if you?re wolfing down take out Thai on the run?

That said, we concede that our modern, busy lives make eating en famille difficult. We think you should fight to make this happen at least once at week, though. And to do that, we?d like to throw out another idea: get your kids in the kitchen and cook together. It has been our first-hand experience that when kids and adults cook together, kids?feel a real sense of accomplishment and are more willing to try the food they prepare. Also, parents of teens: guess what? Working side-by-side in the kitchen, your teen may actually talk to you. Shocking!

Here?s a recipe from a recent dad-and-daughter workshops where we prepared a buffet of appetizers.

Buffalo Chicken Bites
(4-6 servings)

4 Tablespoons unsalted butter
2 Tablespoons hot sauce (we like Frank?s!)
1 Tablespoon dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon rice vinegar

2 Cups potato chips
1-1/2 pound boneless chicken breasts cut into small bite-sized pieces

A big bowl of lettuce
Cut-up celery sticks
1 Cup blue cheese dip or salad dressing

Preheat oven to 425OF. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.

Make the sauce by melting the butter in a small saucepan over MEDIUM heat. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the hot sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar until the sugar dissolves. Set aside.

Put the potato chips in a big plastic bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the chips to fine crumbs. Pour them onto a plate.

Now prepare the chicken like this:

• Dip each piece of chicken in the hot sauce
• Then roll the chicken piece in the chip crumbs
• Place the chicken on the baking sheet
• Repeat the with remaining chicken pieces.

Okay, now bake them! Put them in the oven for 25-30 minutes. Remove from the oven. Arrange the chicken on lettuce and put the celery around the edges. Pour the dressing into a bowl. Serve alongside the chicken.
