New Scratch Blocks Plugin

Hello Wikians,

Happy new year!

I've just made some modifications to the wiki. I made & installed a plugin that converts an easy written notation of Scratch scripts into visual blocks as they look in the Scratch application. That means we will not have to take screenshots to include scripts in pages any longer.

We'll soon be deploying this plugin to the Scratch Forums too, and possibly make it available for public use afterwards.

You can use the plugin by typing the Blocks Plugin Syntax in between <scratchblocks></scratchblocks> tags. The syntax page is still under construction, but for now just check out my sandbox, I dropped a bigger script there with the code right below. The syntax should be straight forward enough for you to figure it out?:P There's also a short syntax description in This forum post.

So that means we have a whole lot of work to do now. All scripts in articles and tutorials have to be transcribed: the screenshots have to be replaced with their written representation (just comment out the images for now - you never know).

This should make it a lot easier for everyone to add scripts to articles and edit them afterwards. We should probably still use screenshots for single blocks in their default form, for example the ones in articles about the blocks themselves. (one-block workarounds for example, should be written with this plugin)

Please help by transcribing the scripts and reporting problems you find - I'd really love to push this to the forums (bug free) in a few days. Please share your thoughts?:)

Looks cool, but blocks do not look how they look are Scratch. Are you planning to make it look more like Scratch? I would like to thank you for all the work put into this. I hope it will improve the wiki. Should we start using this in the wiki and replacing scripts now?

During the past year or so, I did my best to make these pure HTML blocks look almost exactly like the blocks in Scratch. I'm always open to improvements, so please share your CSS if you find something that looks better! And yes, you can start transcribing scripts now!?:)

Wow! This is so exciting! The development has been long, but to see it in place finally is quite rewarding. That's not to say there won't be changes or improvements to be made in the future, as we are the first people to be publicly testing out the plugin, before it's added to the forums (hopefully not a long wait). So again, don't be afraid to start making scripts, but if you want to test things out for bugs or anything, use your sandbox?;). We will also soon have to develop an article on the syntax of the plugin, so that we wikians, as well as the forum users, will be able to learn how to use it.

As you can see the <key [__ v] pressed?>'s aren't working as I decribed above. Also the last if statement: <<(scrollz) < [20]> or <(scrollz) > [217]>> does not work. If there is a bug please fix it, or if I am doing something wrong please show me the proper syntax. Thanks.

Thanks for the bug reports Bsteward?:). I suggest that we create an article for bug reports. Probably Blocks Plugin Syntax/Bugs. Also, perhaps I could ask for your advice -- should these pages be "Blocks" or "Block"?

Jonathan Ive, Apple Design Chief, Knighted by iPod User Queen Elizabeth II

Jonathan Ive, Apple's design chief who holds more then 400 patents, has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, 85, an iPod user.

The British-born Ive, 44, who now lives in San Francisco, said the honor was "absolutely thrilling." Ive is senior VP for industrial design at Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple, where he has worked since 1997, long before Apple released millions of iPods, iPhones and iPads for which he was responsible for design.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who died Oct. 5 at 56, was a design fanatic, who early on sought out some of Silicon Valley's best-known design centers, such as Frog Design, for assistance on developing products like the Macintosh computer.

Indeed, Ive's first work for Apple was via London-based Tangerine, an industrial design agency where he was on staff. In 1997, Jobs brought him to Apple fulltime.

At Apple, Ives has his own lab, special team of designers and a degree of independence not known to many other industrial designers. On the other hand, the ease of use, versatility and functionality of products like the iPod has resulted in sales of hundreds of millions of consumer electronics products at premium prices. Apple sold more than 32 million iPads in its fiscal year ended Sept. 24.

Jobs was well-known as a design fanatic who collaborated closely with Ive, who participated in the October launch of the iPhone 4S just before Jobs' death. Not known is how the partnership continues under current CEO Tim Cook, 51.

Ive was previously honored by the Queen: in 2006, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a title that doesn't confer a knighthood. In the Jan. 1, 2012 honors list, he was named a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which adds the title.

Ive is married and the father of twin sons.

Shares of Apple closed at $405 on Dec. 30, up 25.6 percent for the year, during which Apple became the world's most valuable technology company. Its market capitalization is $376.4 billion.

NEW YORK (AP) ? With glittering fireworks and star-studded celebrations from New Zealand to Times Square, the world eagerly welcomed a new year and hope for a better future Saturday, saying goodbye to a year of hurricanes, tsunamis and economic turmoil that many would rather forget.

Revelers in Australia, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific island nation of Samoa, which jumped across the international dateline to be the first to celebrate, welcomed 2012 with booming pyrotechnic displays. Fireworks soared and sparked over Moscow's Red Square, crowds on Paris' Champs-Elysees boulevard popped Champagne corks at midnight, and up to a million revelers were expected to jam New York's Times Square for the famed crystal-paneled ball drop.

But many approached the new year with more relief than joy, as people battered by weather disasters, joblessness and economic uncertainty hoped the stroke of midnight would change their fortunes.

"Once the ball drops, I won't give 2011 another thought," said Kyralee Scott, 16, of Jackson, New Jersey, whose father spent most of the year out of work. "It was a pretty tough year, but God was looking after us and I know 2012 has got to be better."

Some New York revelers, wearing party hats and "2012" glasses, began camping out Saturday morning, even as workers readied bags stuffed with hundreds of balloons and technicians put colored filters on klieg lights. The crowds cheered as workers lit the crystal-paneled ball that drops at midnight Saturday and put it through a test run, 400 feet (120 meters) above the street. The sphere, now decorated with 3,000 Waterford crystal triangles, has been dropping to mark the new year since 1907, long before television made it a U.S. tradition.

As the country prepared for the celebration, glum wasn't on the agenda for many, even those that had a sour year.

"We're hoping the next year will be better," said Becky Martin, a former elementary school teacher who drove from Rockford, Illinois, to Times Square after spending a fruitless year trying to find a job. "We're starting off optimistic and hoping it lasts."

Many expressed cautious hope that better times were ahead after a year in which Japan was ravaged by an earthquake and tsunami triggering a nuclear disaster, hurricanes wreaked havoc across the U.S. and a debt crisis threatened Europe's economy.

"Everybody's suffering. That's why it's so beautiful to be here celebrating something with everybody," said Lisa Nicol, 47, of Melbourne, Australia, who was in Times Square.

For all of the holiday's bittersweet potential, New York City always treats it like a big party ? albeit one that now takes place under the watchful eye of a massive security force, including more than 1,500 police officers.

Dick Clark, who suffered a stroke in 2004, will be back to help host his namesake New Year's Eve celebration with Ryan Seacrest, featuring performances by Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. Gaga will then join Mayor Michael Bloomberg to lead the 60-second countdown to the New Year.

In Las Vegas, police planned to shut down a four-mile (6.4-kilometer) section of the Strip to vehicle traffic six hours before midnight, letting revelers party in the street. Casino nightclubs touted pricey, exclusive bashes hosted by celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Fergie, and fireworks were expected to shoot from the rooftops of eight of the city's most famous casinos.

Atlanta was welcoming thousands to its downtown, where a giant peach is dropped every New Year's Eve at midnight. Fireworks were to be launched from the top of the Space Needle in Seattle; in Houston, tens of thousands were celebrating at a party with country singer Delbert McClinton.

Miami has its own fruit, The Big Orange, a neon citrus with a new animated face that will rise up the side of a downtown hotel as fireworks go off nearby. The town of Eastport, Maine, will lower an 8-foot (2.4-meter)-long wooden sardine from a downtown building at midnight, in celebration of its sardine canning and fishing history.

The first worldwide celebrations started in the island nation of Samoa, which hopped across the international date line at midnight on Thursday, skipping Friday and moving instantly to Saturday.

Samoa and the neighboring nation of Tokelau lie near the dateline that zigzags vertically through the Pacific Ocean; both sets of islands decided to realign themselves this year from the Americas side of the line to the Asia side to be more in tune with key trading partners.

In Sydney, more than 1.5 million people watched the shimmering pyrotechnic display designed around the theme "Time to Dream". In London, some 250,000 people gathered to listen to Big Ben chime at the stroke of midnight. Fireworks were set off from the London Eye, the giant wheel on the south bank of the River Thames.

Hundreds of thousands of people took to Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate for a massive party complete with live performances from the Scorpions and other bands and a spectacular fireworks display.

Revelers in Spain greeted 2012 by eating 12 grapes in time with Madrid's central Puerta del Sol clock, a national tradition observed by millions who stop parties to follow the chimes on television.

Tens of thousands of young people in the Spanish capital gathered at six indoor "macro-parties" the city council had authorized in big venues such as the city's main sports hall.

Milena Quiroga was to be among the many there happy to move on. "I am glad to see 2011 go because it was a tough year; my restaurant laid off almost half of the staff," said the 25-year-old waitress.

World leaders evoked 2011's struggles in their New Year's messages with some ambivalence.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy warned Europe's crisis is not finished and "that 2012 will be the year full of risks, but also of possibilities."

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin wished well being and prosperity to all Russians "regardless of their political persuasion" after large-scale protests against him.

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI marked the end of 2011 with prayers of thanks and said humanity awaits the new year with apprehension but also with hope for a better future.

"We prepare to cross the threshold of 2012, remembering that the Lord watches over us and takes care of us," Benedict said. "In him this evening we want to entrust the entire world. We put into his hands the tragedies of this world of ours and we also offer him the hopes for a better future."

Several people preparing to celebrate the holiday told the AP that they would usher in the New Year hoping the U.S. Congress would become a more cooperative place. Some talked about their hopes for the presidential election. Others said they hoped to hold on to their job, or find a new one to replace one they'd lost.

An Associated Press-GfK poll conducted Dec. 8-12 found that 62 percent of Americans are optimistic that the nation's fortunes would improve in 2012, and 78 percent hopeful that their own family would have a better year. Most wrote off 2011 as a dud.

Japan cult member nabbed after 17 years on the run (AP)

TOKYO ? A member of the doomsday cult behind a deadly Tokyo subway gas attack and other crimes turned himself in to police after 17 years on the run, an official said Sunday.

A Tokyo metropolitan police official said Makoto Hirata, a member of Aum Shinrikyo, conspired with several other members in kidnapping a notary official in 1995 and causing his death. The victim, Kiyoshi Kariya, then 68, was the brother of a follower trying to quit the group.

Hirata, 46, who had been on the run since the summer of 1995, turned himself in at a Tokyo police station and was detained early Sunday, the police official said on condition of anonymity.

The cult also released sarin nerve gas in Tokyo's subway system in 1995, killing 13 people and injuring more than 6,000 in Japan's deadliest act of domestic terrorism.

The cult had amassed an arsenal of chemical, biological and conventional weapons in anticipation of an apocalyptic showdown with the government.

Police say Hirata and other cult members kidnapped Kariya off a Tokyo street and confined him at the group's tightly guarded commune at the foot of Mount Fuji. They allegedly used anesthetics on Kariya to get him to talk about his sister, who escaped from the group after being pressed to donate her land. Kariya died from a drug overdose, police said.

According to court testimony, cult members burned Kariya's body in an incinerator inside the commune and disposed of the ashes in a nearby lake to destroy the evidence.

Public broadcaster NHK said Hirata told police he wanted to "put the past behind him." He was carrying a travel pack containing minimal daily necessities and had Japanese currency worth several hundred dollars in his wallet, it said.

Hirata told police he only drove Kariya to the cult compound and denied other allegations, NHK said.

Hirata was one of the last three wanted cult members. The two others are still on the run.

He is also suspected in the near-fatal shooting of Japan's then top police chief, but the high-profile case was closed last year after the statute of limitations expired.

Nearly 200 members of the cult have been convicted in the gas attack and dozens of other crimes. Thirteen, including cult guru Shoko Asahara, are on death row. No one has been executed.

Hirata's arrest could help fill in missing pieces of the cult investigation.

"As a member of the victim's family, I just want to know the truth," Kariya's son Minoru said in a televised interview. "I hope the new witness will help bring new revelations."

The cult, now renamed Aleph, once had 10,000 members in Japan and another 30,000 in Russia. It remains under police surveillance.

Mark Hurd Scandal Details, Harassment of Jodie Fisher Revealed

A lurid, accusatory letter that led to the demise of Mark Hurd as Hewlett-Packard's CEO in 2012 has been made public after the Delaware Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the infamous letter be released, despite Hurd's strong objections.

The court did not actually release the letter, but it was obtained by several news outlets.

The eight-page account, written in June 2010 by celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred (obviously) depicts in detail the story of Hurd repeatedly soliciting sex from Jodie Fisher, a greeter at Hewlett-Packard events and former reality TV star.

The letter claims that over the course of two years, Hurd pushed Fisher to meet him for dinner, give him hugs, sleep in his room and have sex with him, despite her continuous rejections.

Fisher said in a statement last year that the letter contained "many inaccuracies," and she noted that she believed Mark Hurd's behavior was not "detrimental to HP."

Nevertheless, the scandal eventually led to Hurd's ouster from HP.

Hurd privately settled Fisher's charges, which alleged sexual harassment. The company's board said its own investigation found no evidence of harassment, it noted that Hurd inappropriately used company funds to take Fisher to dinner at non-HP events.

According to the letter, events began to unfold in August 2007, when Hurd's manager Caprice Fimbres suggested that a reality star from the NBC show Age of Love be made Hewlett-Packard's host for several executive events.

Hurd, who is married, and is now president of Oracle, flew from Palo Alto to Santa Monica, Calif., to meet Jodie Fisher personally.

The two met again the follow month in what "felt more like a date," Fisher recalled, and she was hired in October to attend an event in Atlanta.

Following the event, the letter says Hurd and Fisher had dinner, and Hurd asked Fisher to come to his room to see some documents about Madame Wu Yi, the Chinese Vice-Premier, whom Hurd was to meet the next day.

Hurd fondled Fisher and asked her to stay the night, which she nixed. A "clearly miffed" Hurd said he was never rejected, demanding at least a hug.

Fisher and Hurd continued to meet for dinner and he kept wooing her, including by telling her about the various women he has slept with. He also noted that many women were "crazy about him," including singer Sheryl Crow.

Using status and wealth to woo Fisher, the letter accuses Hurd of bullying her.

Hurd often called Fisher in her room to talk about personal and business matters, including revealing that HP was about to purchase services giant EDS, which the company eventually did buy in May 2008 for nearly $14 billion.

If true, it's possible that Hurd illegally leaked insider information.

The letter accuses Hurd of instructing Fisher not to disclose anything "as it would be considered insider trading" if Fisher bought stock in EDS.

In one noteworthy advance that took place in July 2009, the letter says Hurd urged Fisher to "go away with him," and he offered her "anything she needed."

Mark Hurd told her that he believed he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, but "would have to see how the chemistry in bed was."

Fisher declined the sex, the money and the trip.
