Opticians see advertising gold in Korean flag flap

LONDON (Reuters) - A British chain of opticians saw publicity gold on Friday after Olympic officials blundered by showing the South Korean flag instead of North Korea's at a women's soccer match.

Opticians Specsavers took out adverts in national newspapers with the North Korean flag above the South Korean one and, written in Korean, a message suggesting the officials should have visited them for an eye test.

The company's regular tagline, used in commercials featuring embarrassing cases of mistaken identity, is 'Should have gone to Specsavers'.

The gaffe in Glasgow on Wednesday caused a diplomatic incident, with the North Koreans walking off the field and delaying the kick off by more than an hour.

Organizers LOCOG apologized and promised the mistake would not happen again.

Telefonica dividend a victim of wider Spanish crisis

MADRID/PARIS (Reuters) - Telefonica's decision to scrap its dividend for the first time since the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s reflects wider concern across companies that Spain's deepening economic crisis may render heavy company debt unsustainable.

Telefonica, a corporate stronghold both in Spain and abroad, shocked investors late on Wednesday with the surprise move intended to slash its debt pile and protect its prized investment-grade rating, now under threat from two agencies.

As well as cutting the dividend for 2012, Telefonica cancelled its share buyback program and trimmed top management's salaries, though remuneration remains above industry standards.

The plan will help Telefonica confront its 57 billion euros ($69 billion) of debt, and was welcomed by analysts and rating agencies. The company's shares closed up 3 percent at 8.9 euros, having initially fallen more than 8 percent at the market open.

The firm has taken action ahead of heavy debt redemptions early next year, with a 1.5 billion euro bond maturing on February 14 and a 1.2 billion euro bond repayment due on June 12.

The cost of insuring against Telefonica's five-year debt using credit default swaps (CDS) has jumped around 170 percent in the last year to over 550 basis points.

The firm's CDS has increased 11 percent since the beginning of the month, while Spain has struggled to avoid taking a full-scale sovereign rescue.

"I see the risks at present for this and other Spanish companies - especially those with consistent refinancing needs - are around liquidity and making sure they can fund themselves internally at least through 2013 and potentially beyond," said Stuart Reid, senior director at Fitch, which rates Telefonica two notches above junk with a negative outlook.

"Telefonica have recognized and responded to this, although there is still more to be done."

The telecoms giant, alongside other Spanish bluechips like oil firm Repsol and bank Santander , long boasted that a global footprint spared them from domestic woes in an economy reeling since a property bubble burst in 2008.

But as Spain has become the new frontline in the euro zone debt crisis, its companies have been struggling to access funding on international markets and now are racing to cut massive debts accumulated during a decade-long boom.

Spain's total corporate debt, including real estate and construction companies, is 1.2 trillion euros, or 120 percent of its Gross Domestic Product.

The country's borrowing costs, to which top companies are closely tied, eased on Thursday after euro zone policymakers hinted at a solution to Spain's funding woes. They remain at a level seen unsustainable in the medium term, however.

FEELING THE HEAT

Other Spanish firms are feeling the heat - Repsol vowed "to do whatever it takes" to save its investment grade rating on Thursday, pushing ahead with plans to raise up to 2.5 billion euros with disposals such as liquefied natural gas assets or the redemption of preference shares.

Santander reported a halving of first-half profit after it wrote down losses on bad property investments in Spain dating from a housing and construction boom that crashed in 2008.

For Telefonica, the key question is whether the dividend cut and an ongoing program of asset sales will be enough to allow it to keep its credit rating.

Standard & Poor's downgraded its debt to BBB in May and Moody's put it on review for downgrade.

The company, which needs to raise 7-8 billion euros a year through 2015 to cope with debt maturities, said preliminary talks with ratings agencies showed they welcomed the move.

If it lost its investment grade rating, raising such massive sums would be harder and cost more. Many bond funds buy only investment grade debt, so the pool of buyers for Telefonica's debt would be sharply reduced if its debt was cut to junk.

"The risk is you purchase the new bond issue and then they become a sub-investment grade issuer," said Louis Gargour, chief investment officer at London-based hedge fund manager LNG Capital, which is neutral on Telefonica.

Telefonica has already paid out around 2.8 billion euros in dividends this year, and should save around 4.2 billion euros compared with 2011 by scrapping remaining payments.

GOING FURTHER?

Analysts welcomed Telefonica's plan as prudent but also underlined the company had little choice, given the severity of its situation.

"They've done what shareholders, the markets in general and credit rating agencies were asking them to do," said Ivan San Felix, an analyst at Renta4 in Madrid.

They also said the company had bought itself more time to sell assets and list its German business on the stock market before facing a cash crunch later this year.

Telefonica said in an analyst presentation it would list O2 Germany in the last quarter of 2012 and remained committed to asset sales. It hopes to raise up to 1.5 billion euros from the sale of call centre business Atento and other units.

But liquidity pressures beyond next year mean the company could still have to do more.

"At best, these will further reduce cash payments to shareholders, at worst they could require further asset disposals," said Ian Kelly, fund manager on the Schroder ISF European Dividend Maximiser, which does not currently hold stock in Telefonica.

Telefonica's 0.75 euro per share payout in 2013, halved from the previously announced 1.5 euro per share, will still give a dividend yield of 8.6 percent, higher than the sector average of 8.1 percent, according to Deutsche Bank.

Telefonica, which made its dividend announcement along with the surprise early release of its first-half results on Wednesday, also said it would slash salaries by 20 percent for board members and around 30 percent for top management.

The move is emblematic of the widespread belt-tightening at the company, whose shares have lost 37 percent since the start of the year.

Telefonica Chairman Cesar Alierta's total salary should fall to around 4.8 million euros this year, still significantly higher than the 1.52 million in gross compensation paid to France Telecom boss Stephane Richard in 2011.

($1 = 0.8248 euros)

A Fabulously-Perfect, Summer Stay-cation for our Family ...

Most of you know that I recently returned from ten days on a mission trip, in New Orleans. ?Prior to making that trip, however, I had the most delightful ?stay-cation? experience, right here in Nebraska! ?My family and I had a great weekend and a fabulous stay at the Lincoln, NE Embassy Suites. ?This wonderful hotel quickly moved to the TOP of our list of favorites and will be the one we think of whenever we are looking for a high-value, affordable family-vacation stay.

(I need to also mention that I was sick with grief that I lost dozens of photos of this trip, when our phone carrier ?lost? them in moving them from my phone to our account. ?Happily, our ten-year-old had her camera along with her, so many shots were recovered from her unique perspective and I?m so grateful to have them.)

marquee

There is no doubt that we were expected, and received VIP treatment at the Lincoln Embassy Suites, however; after only a brief time at the hotel, it was also obvious that everyone staying there was given amenities and attention we have not experienced with any other hotel chain. ?We pulled up to the front of the hotel and were treated to valet parking. ?We walked through the doors into a modern and beautifully decorated lobby and THEN ? we turned to our left, and the entire room opened up into a gorgeous atrium, (nine stories high), filled with trees, plants, streams and waterfalls and sprinkled with dining tables and chairs! ?In the center of the atrium, we could look straight up to the giant sky-light that flooded the entire area with natural light. ?The atrium was surrounded, on three sides, by balconies in front of the picture windows of the guest rooms, rising all the way to the top floor. ?It was really quite beautiful, and yet, we immediately felt welcome and ?at-home?. ?The space was as comfortable and inviting as it was ?beautiful. ? Hotel staff remembered, (and called us by), our names, each time we passed; always checking to make sure ?that we wanted for nothing, throughout our stay.

suites

The beautiful atrium area. At the top of the picture you can see there is a small bar and grill where guests can order and then enjoy their drinks or food in the atrium. Just to the right of that, there is a full, sit-down restaurant with an extensive menu available. Whenever we would step out of our suite and look down, this was our view over the balcony. So pretty!

After we breezed through the simple registration process, at the front desk, we stepped into one of three glass elevators that overlooked the atrium and enjoyed the wonderful view as we were lifted up to the eighth floor and our spacious and comfy two-room suite. ?The suite had a HUGE bathroom, a bedroom with two full-sized beds, a desk, large closet and flat screen tv. ?The living area also had a flat screen tv and all the hook-ups to have?accommodated?our son?s gaming systems, though we didn?t think to bring them. ?Wi-fi was included with our room, as well, and was the perfect companion to the large dining/table desk area that made it easy to get work done or sit down to enjoy a snack with the kids. ?The kitchenette area had a sink and ample counter space with a coffee maker, mini-fridge and microwave, plus a safe for any valuables we needed to leave in the room. ?What a treat to open the fridge and find that it had been stocked for us with milk, chocolate milk and many varieties of soda, as well as a gorgeous tray of snacks that included fresh strawberries and cream cheese dip, apple slices, brownies, cookies and more! ?There was a note on the counter inviting us to enjoy these complimentary refreshments and my crew didn?t take long accepting that invitation. ?Delicious!

A well-laid out "kitchen" area gave us the opportunity to store and enjoy refreshments in our room.

Each suite has a separate living area with a flat screen TV. Ours also had a table/desk, a pullout sofa and an arm chair with an ottoman.

The accommodations were spacious and comfortable. While not dissimilar to many other "suites" we have stayed in, the Embassy Suites rooms were clean, well cared for and included amenities we did NOT have at any other "suites" chain. We loved our stay here!

After getting unpacked and freshening up, my ten-year-old and I decided to walk around and take a little tour, before the family went down for the free Manager?s Reception. ?And since it was one of her most favorite things, our tour HAD to include another ride in the glass elevators! ?We noted that there were not only ice and soda machines on each floor, but that using our key card access, we were able to open large, well-kept laundry facilities, as well. ?We scoped out the location of the pool and hot tub, for later, and discovered a weight and exercise room, plus a nice gift shop. ?There is even a full restaurant, inside the hotel! ?We took some extra time to stroll through the atrium, cross the footbridge over the stream and just enjoy the pretty space and the soothing sounds of the water tumbling over rocks in the falls.

At the Manager?s Reception we enjoyed chips and salsa, pretzels and other finger food snacks along with free beverages ? sodas, and if wanted, mixed drinks for the adults. ? The setting for the reception was the atrium we had toured, earlier, and there was ample room for all the guests as it is dotted with dozens of dining tables and chairs, plus conversation areas and other seating. ?It was a casual and comfortable gathering where guests had the opportunity to relax and visit.

We walked to the Haymarket, a local historic area of the city, full of restaurants, antique shops and art galleries, for dinner. ?It was great that it is so close to the hotel and we didn?t even have a need for the car. ?There is actually quite a lot to do in downtown Lincoln, that is within walking distance of Embassy Suites. ?We could have taken in a movie at the Grand Theatre across the street or checked out the latest concert or play at the Lied Center. ?And it would be impossible to go hungry with the number of available restaurants, serving everything from smokehouse barbecue, to pizza to Indian cuisine. ?The possibilities will?tantalize?your?taste buds?as you walk the Haymarket and smell all the delicious aromas.

walking to dinner

Walking to dinner in the Haymarket. There was so much that was in walking distance of the hotel!

After dinner, we walked back to the hotel and were surprised to find we had the gorgeous pool, sauna and spa area all to ourselves. ?It was such a fun evening and once, again, the staff at the hotel was cordial and attentive, acknowledging us by name and then later on, quickly responding to a request for fresh towels in the pool area. ?We finished off our fun at the pool and headed back upstairs to our suite, where the kids pulled out the hide-a-bed and curled up to enjoy a movie, while David and I were able to watch a movie of our own, in the other room. ?Two TV?s turned out to be a great feature!

pool

We enjoyed getting to swim in the gorgeous pool area during our stay!

The next morning, (You know, the point that is usually a mad scramble to choke down a couple granola bars or a tub of yogurt, pack and be out before check-out time.), we were able to wake up, get ready for our day and then head back downstairs to the beautiful atrium at the center of the hotel. ?Two professional chefs were busy taking personal orders for custom omelets, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes and other delicious fare at absolutely NO EXTRA COST ? totally FREE ? included in the price of the room for our entire family! ?There was also a generously stocked buffet line with cereals, fruit, donuts, muffins, bagels, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy and more ? also free. ?We were so shocked and pleased at the wonder of it all, I forgot to take any pictures of the extraordinarily delicious food! ?I enjoyed a delicious sausage and cheese omelet with green peppers, onions and cheddar cheese. ?The person behind me in line, ordered an egg white omelet with peppers and cheese. ?My daughter ordered a ham and cheese omelet with a side of bacon. ?My husband ordered?.well, you get the idea. ?There must have been eight or ten individual omelet skillets going at all times. ?We placed our orders for our customized breakfast and watched as the pro chefs prepared each one individually and perfectly! ?Yum! ?What an extraordinarily delicious breakfast experience! ?If we had gone to a restaurant to order this meal, we would easily have spent $50 or more for our family to have food that probably would not have approached the quality we received at Embassy Suites. ?Can you believe that was all included in the price of our already very reasonably priced suite? ?Amazing value!

made-to-order breakfast

The made-to-order custom breakfasts were scrumptious and the entire breakfast "spread" was plentiful and had so many options! just to the right of this area, was where the two professional chefs could be found, creating breakfast masterpieces for each guest!

?

After breakfast, we checked out and the valets brought our van right to the front door, where we loaded up to continue the rest of our brief stay-cation. ?We live so close to Lincoln and had taken our older daughters to visit some of the great frugal, family fun spots, but our ten-year-old hadn?t experienced several of those, yet. ?So, we strolled through the Sunken Gardens (completely free), visited the giant sculpture fountain in the zoo park, checked out a few interesting shops at the mall and then took her to tour the State Capitol building. ?It was a fun, educational and budget-friendly family weekend that created some great memories and we?re so grateful to Embassy Suites for making it special!

Biostar?s Hi-Fi A85X AMD FM2 Trinity Mobo Gets Windows 8 Compatibility Certificate

Veteran motherboard company Biostar has decided to get back in the high-end computer mainboard market segment and launched back at Computex 2012 a new line of AMD FM2 ?Trinity? mainboards. The most capable model is the Biostar Hi-Fi A85X, which has received a Windows 8 compatibility certification from Microsoft. The motherboard comes with four DIMM slots able to handle up to 32 GB or DDR3 2400 MHz + memory.

There is a total of three PCI-Express x16 slots, but when all of them are occupied, the first two will be set in x8 mode and the third is an x16 slot connected to the FCH that only has 4 PCI-Express lanes available for data transfer.

AMD?s FM2 socket is powered by a 10-phase VRM which can only improve overclocking results.

There are seven internal SATA III ports and an eSATA port on the I/O panel. We will also find a DVI connector, a VGA port, HDMI and DisplayPort, on the same I/O panel.

There is also the Hi-Fi audio panel, four USB 3.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet connector and a legacy PCI slot.

Biostar wants to reinvent itself on the high-end market and has designed the entire Hi-Fi motherboard line with lots of useful quality features.

The Hi-Fi line from Biostar comes with a high SNR CODEC likely manufactured by Realtek and with OPAMP circuitry that uses higher grade electrolytic capacitors.

The entire audio circuitry uses a separated PCB base and is isolated from the ground layer of the rest of the mainboard. This will help lower the interference from other components on the motherboard like most high-end audio solutions require.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels fired at tanks in Damascus residential districts, armored vehicles blocked the main entrances to a neighborhood and protesters briefly barricaded a main highway into the city with bricks and burning tires, leaving hundreds of cars backed up in some of the worst clashes to hit the tightly controlled capital since the uprising began 16 months ago.

The scenes from the second straight day of fierce clashes in Damascus, unfolding in amateur videos posted online, were the latest evidence that Syria's conflict is fast devolving into a civil war that is moving ever closer to the seat of President Bashar Assad's power.

Plumes of black smoke drifted over the city skyline and gunfire could be heard throughout the capital, even in the upscale cafes in downtown frequented by members of Assad's regime. The fighting left many streets deserted in a string of neighborhoods on the city's southwest corner where the fighting was focused. Many families have fled, and fear grips many who remain behind.

"It is a war here, a war," said a woman reached by phone in the Midan neighborhood who said her 5-year-old son had not stopped screaming since the clashes started. She didn't give her name for fear of repercussions from Syrian security.

"It seems there is a new strategy to bring the fighting into the center of the capital," Mustafa Osso, an activist inside Syria, told The Associated Press, referring to the rebels who fight under the banner of the Free Syrian Army. "The capital used to be safe. This will trouble the regime."

The violence in Syria has grown increasingly bloody and chaotic in recent months as the uprising has morphed from a peaceful revolt into an armed insurgency aimed at toppling Assad's regime.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the West of using blackmail to secure a new U.N. Security Council resolution that could allow the use of force in Syria. A Chapter 7 resolution authorizes actions to enforce sanctions that can ultimately include the use of military force, which U.S. administration and European officials ? for now ? are playing down as a possibility.

U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan was expected in Moscow to discuss the Syria crisis with Russian leaders on Monday. The meeting ? the latest in Annan's efforts to save his faltering peace plan ? comes a day after the conflict crossed an important symbolic threshold, with the international Red Cross formally declaring it a civil war, a status with implications for potential war crimes prosecutions.

Monday's fighting in Damascus was concentrated in the neighborhoods of Kfar Souseh, Midan and Tadamon, according to Osso and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory said there were casualties but did not provide a number.

An amateur video posted online showed several gunmen, some of them masked, as they ran or opened fire in the streets of Tadamon. Other gunmen took positions behind sand bag fortifications and fired toward areas where government forces were said to be taking positions.

Another video showed Kfar Souseh with the sound of intense gunfire in the distance. The presidential palace, on a mountain overlooking the capital, could be seen in the background.

The authenticity of the videos could not be independently confirmed.

There have been sporadic clashes in Damascus in recent months, although President Bashar Assad's forces remain firmly in control of the city. Many of the Damascus suburbs, however, have risen up against the regime, prompting a ferocious response from the military in an attempt to clear out rebel fighters from the towns that ring the capital.

On Monday, activists reported government attacks in the Damascus suburb of Qatana.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, who heads the Observatory, said Monday's fighting was taking place about 2 kilometers (1 mile) from the airport highway.

A Damascus resident who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals said gunfire and sporadic explosions could be heard throughout the morning. The resident said that unlike previous clashes that occurred at night, the recent fighting took place during the day ? a sign that the rebels are becoming more brazen.

Another resident said black smoke could be seen all over Damascus since Sunday. The resident added that shooting and bombing can be heard in Damascus and that security forces deployed along the army all areas in the city.

"People are fleeing from Midan and Tadamon," the resident said. "It is the most serious clashes in Damascus."

The Syrian regime has grown increasingly isolated as it has ramped up its offensive against the opposition, and several Western and Arab nations have either expelled Syrian diplomats or pulled their own ambassadors from Damascus to protest the crackdown.

On Monday, Morocco asked the Syrian ambassador to leave the country, Moroccan Communications Minister Mustapha Khalfi told The Associated Press. Within hours, Syria's state-run TV said the Foreign Ministry declared Morocco's ambassador to Syria persona non grata.

Tunisia was the first Arab country to withdraw its ambassador from Syria in February to protest the harsh crackdown on the opposition and it was followed shortly by the six nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

On Sunday, United Nations observers gathered new details on what happened in a village where dozens were reported killed in a regime assault. After a second visit to Tremseh on Sunday, the team said Syrian troops went door-to-door in the small farming community, checking residents' IDs and then killing some and hauling others away.

According to the U.N., the attack appeared to target army defectors and activists.

"Pools of blood and brain matter were observed in a number of homes," a U.N. statement said.

Syria denied U.N. claims that government forces had used heavy weapons such as tanks, artillery and helicopters during the attack Thursday.

Anti-regime activists estimate that more than 17,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising began.

(AP) ? The head of Egypt's military took a tough line Sunday on the Muslim Brotherhood, warning that he won't let the fundamentalist group dominate the country, only hours after U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton urged him to work with Egypt's elected Islamist leaders.

Clinton's visit to Egypt underscored the difficulty Washington faces in trying to wield its influence amid the country's stormy post-Hosni Mubarak power struggles. Protesters chanting against the U.S. ? sometimes reaching several hundred ? sprung up at several sites Clinton visited this weekend. On Sunday, protesters threw tomatoes, water bottles and shoes at her motorcade as she left a ceremony marking the opening of a new U.S. consulate in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.

Islamist Mohammed Morsi, a longtime Brotherhood figure, was sworn two weeks ago as Egypt's first democratically elected president. Led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, the military handed over power to him June 30 after ruling Egypt for 16 months. The military, however, dissolved the Brotherhood-led parliament and stripped Morsi of significant authorities in the days before his inauguration, while retaining overwhelming powers for itself, including legislative power and control of the writing of a new constitution.

The United States is in a difficult spot when it comes to dealing with post-Mubarak Egypt ? eager to be seen as a champion of democracy and human rights after three decades of close ties with the ousted leader despite his abysmal record in advancing either.

This has involved some uncomfortable changes, including occasional criticism of America's longtime faithful partners in Egypt's military as it grabs more power and words of support for Islamist parties far more skeptical of U.S. intentions in Egypt and the rest of the Middle East.

That has fueled accusations among some Egyptians who back the military or oppose Islamists that Washington is promoting the rise of the Brotherhood to power.

At the ceremony in Alexandria, Clinton denied the U.S. supports any particular party. She also called for religious tolerance and respect of minorities in the new Egypt ? a major concern among the Christian minority, women and secular liberals who fear restrictions if the fundamentalist Brotherhood wields power.

"Democracy is not just about reflecting the will of the majority," she said. "It is also about protecting the rights of the minority."

"Real democracy means that no group or faction or leader can impose their will, their ideology, their religion, their desires on anyone else."

Still, Clinton does want the military to work with Morsi and his Islamist allies on a full transition to civilian rule. But with the U.S. having already approved another massive delivery of military aid, it was unclear what leverage Washington has as it seeks to stabilize Egypt and build a new relationship with America's once ironclad Arab ally.

This weekend, she tried to stake out a middle ground.

Meeting with Morsi on Saturday for the first time, she called for consensus. Without taking a position on the specific disputes, she urged Tantawi to return the armed forces to a "purely national security role," as she termed it.

But her criticism of the military was muted. She commended it defending lives during the Jan. 25-Feb. 11, 2011 revolution against Mubarak and for the progress Egypt made under its interim leadership, which included free and fair elections.

Still, after talks with Clinton on Sunday, Tantawi made clear the military will not allow the Brotherhood to hold sway, though he didn't specify the group by name.

"Egypt will never fall. It belongs to all Egyptians and not to a certain group ? the armed forces will not allow it," he warned in comments to reporters after a handover ceremony for the transfer of command of the armed forces' 2nd Field Army in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.

"The armed forces will not allow anyone, especially those pushed from outside, to distract it from its role as the protector of Egypt," he said. "The army will never commit treason and will continue to perform its duties until Egypt reaches the shores of safety."

The U.S is looking to safeguard its interests in the region ? from counterterrorism cooperation to Arab-Israeli peace efforts. But the deepening paralysis and lack of clarity over the leadership in Egypt has put much of its agenda on hold. Clinton headed Sunday evening to Jerusalem, where she is tackling another realm where Washington's influence has failed to bring a breakthrough, reviving Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

Egypt's military and the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's strongest political force, are in a competition over power that has intensified with Morsi's winning of the presidency last month. Days before he was sworn in, the Brotherhood-led parliament was dissolved and the generals gave themselves legislative and budgetary authority and control over the process of drafting a new constitution, while severely limiting the president's authority.

Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years, is the most senior of the generals who took power after the longtime leader's ouster 17 months ago. Under their tutelage, however, the military came under harsh criticism from the youth groups behind Mubarak's ouster. The military is accused of doing nothing to stop a surge in crime, a faltering economy and of killing scores of protesters.

The military and the Brotherhood have bad blood since the 1950s, when then-president Gamal Abdel-Nasser jailed the group's leaders and hundreds of its members. He ordered another crackdown in the early 1960s, jailing some again and executing a few. Mubarak spent most of his years in office chasing after the Brotherhood, jailing thousands.

Morsi's efforts to reconvene parliament suffered a setback Saturday, when an appeals court said it stood by another court's ruling that the chamber was invalid because a third of its members were illegally elected.

Acting on the Supreme Constitutional Court's June 14 verdict, the then-ruling military disbanded the 508-seat chamber.

Morsi defied that ruling and ordered the legislature to reconvene last week. During a brief session on Tuesday, speaker Saad el-Katatni referred the constitutional court's ruling to the country's highest appeals court for a legal opinion.

After a lengthy discussion on Saturday, the appeals court refused to take up the case, saying it had no jurisdiction over the implementation of the constitutional court's ruling.

It is not clear yet how Morsi planned to respond to the latest setback to his efforts to assert his authority. Another crisis was looming in the run-up to court rulings expected on Tuesday over the legitimacy of a 100-member panel elected by the dissolved legislature to draft a new constitution.

The administrative court on Tuesday is also likely to refer to the Supreme Constitutional Court to rule on the legality of parliament's mostly toothless upper chamber. The higher court is vrtually certain to rule against it because it was elected under the same law declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.

HINDU GODDESS KALI 'S METHOD OF ELIMINATING DIABETES

A recent report by United Press trust of India (UPI) stated that during the past three years more than 2,500 young boys and girls were sacrificed to goddess Kali in India. Another of AFP's recent reports say: hundreds of young boys and virgin girls are sacrificed every month for the deity Kali. In one case Rama Sewak hacked his eight year old son to death in broad daylight in Delhi because goddess Kali had told him he would come back to life and bring him good fortune. Bloodthirsty Kali is worshipped openly the length and breadth of India. Kali's statue stands naked astride the inanimate body of the Hindu deity Shiva, tongue stuck out with blood dripping from fang-like teeth. She holds a noose, a skull-topped staff, a blood-encrusted sword and a severed head. She is also known as Durga, Devi, Shaktima, Uma and Parvathi in other manifestations. The priest of Delhi, Kali Bari, says that a child sacrificed to Kali ensures a man the birth of a son. Human sacrifices are also made to these gods or goddesses, either to appease them or to ask favours of them.

Ouya, Android Game Console Reaches $4 Million On Kickstarter

published: 2012-07-12 13:42:13

With just under a month to go, Ouya, an Android-based home gaming console has surpassed the $4 million mark on Kickstarter (as of the publishing of this article). The initial goal was only $950,000. I guess there are a lot of people out there, 32,062 to be exact, that want something a little different out of their home console gaming experience.

The Ouya is an open-style game console for televisions based on Android's design platform. So if you can make a game for the Android you can make a game for the Ouya. One of the main selling points is that ANYONE can make a game for the Ouya and get it out there. No more retail fees, no more royalty fees, no more massive distribution costs. Effectively, it's a console made for gamers but designed for developers.

I also really love the selling point that hackers are welcome. I nearly chuckled out loud at that statement on the Kickstarter page and when it was mentioned in the promo video, which you can watch below.

Now for everyone thinking "Ohhh, this will murder home console gaming" it's not quite like that. The most core games that will be available from the start are games most mobile gamers will already be familiar with, including Minecraft from Mojang, Shadowgun, and Deadtrigger from Madfinger Games. And speaking of core games...right now the go-to-engine for high-end mobile titles is the Unity Engine, so we can expect to see the Unity tech showcased quite a bit early on in the lifecycle of the Ouya given that most devs don't want to deal with the licensing fees attached to other AAA engines such as the CryEngine and Unreal Engine (although the UDK is still highly supported).

I'm sure the biggest obstacle of the Ouya will be finding a mainstream audience, but assuming that's not the actual goal of the project then I think Ouya will be perfectly fine with a more niche development and support community. I can easily see this becoming the home console rendition of Linux.

The project is also being heavily supported by a lot of indie-devs right now who just want to make and create great games. So even if we're not seeing Uncharted 3 quality titles on the Ouya, you can bet your bottom dollar you'll be seeing plenty of original and creative games nonetheless.

You can donate to the project just for kicks (they've already surpassed their goal by a substantial margin, to say the least) or you can learn more about the open-development platform that could help breathe some new life into the home console arena by visiting the Official Kickstarter Page. You can check out the specs for the console below.

Specifications:
? Tegra3 quad-core processor
? 1GB RAM
? 8GB of internal flash storage
? HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
? WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
? Bluetooth LE 4.0
? USB 2.0 (one)
? Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
? Android 4.0

The wicketkeeper, wearing a cap rather than a helmet, had been standing up to the stumps.

At the end of play South Africa Team Manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said: 'It is a significant injury. Mark sustained a direct blow to the left eye, which resulted in a laceration to the white part. It is what we call an eyeball rupture.

'The ophthalmic surgeon had a look at him at the Accident and Emergency Unit and decided that he needed to undergo exploratory surgery to identify the extent of the damage.

'He will need a general anaesthetic so there has to be a six-hour gap since he last ate a meal. That means the operation will be performed at around 7pm.

'After the operation we will talk to the surgeon again. With eye injuries one cannot make predictions.

'From a medical point of view a lot depends on whether there is damage to the retina, which allows us to see and focus. We won't know about that until after the surgery.

'The surgeons will be able to give us a better indication of the damage after the operation. Then it will take 48 to 72 hours for the swelling to start going down.'

Dr Moosajee was more worried about Boucher's health than his place in the side but a decision will have to be made whether to continue with AB de Villiers keeping wicket or send for specialist replacement Thami Tsolekile.

'The concern at the moment is for Mark Boucher the patient, rather than whether he is going to take part in the rest of the tour,' he said.

'The selectors back home are being kept abreast of what is happening. I don't think he will be ready for the first Test, if the series, but I would like to wait for the information the surgery gives us.'

South Africa coach Allan Donald was distraught for his former team-mate, who had big plans for the current tour.

'He wanted to finish here. He's been talking about maybe going, if needed, to Australia but he wanted to go out on a real high in England,' Donald told Sky Sports News.

'I can't think of a bigger kick in the teeth than that.

'To happen on the first day is a cruel blow. Let's just hope he is going to be okay and take it from there.'

Somerset's Peter Trego, a centurion on the day, said: 'All our thoughts are with Mark Boucher. Sight is such an important thing for a cricketer and we all hope the injury is not as serious as it looked.'
