Family Wants Records About Kathleen High Football Coach in Abuse Incident

The family of a Kathleen High School football player has retained a Tampa-based lawyer to investigate accusations the school's head football coach, Irving Strickland, abused his authority in twisting a teen's nipple to the point of bruising.

A letter delivered this week by the high school senior's lawyer to the Polk County School Board requested all available documents about the pinching, and the internal investigation into the coach accused of doing it.

The records request comesmore than three months after Devarus Robinson, 19, reported Strickland twisted his nipple as punishment for cursing, and then again after Robinson asked for football equipment. In the letter written by Tampa attorney Warren Hope Dawson, the Sept. 23 twisting was described using a riot of adjectives, including "painful," "insulting," and "criminal."

The accusation follows an intense year of prep sports drama, one that saw the arrest of George Jenkins High School head football coach Matt Thompson on charges he had sex with a minor, and the scolding of a Mulberry High School wrestling coach for using inappropriate tactics to discipline his players.

Robinson said Thursday he initially spoke about the bruising to his aunt, who suggested he tell Kathleen High School Athletic Director Gary Lineberger. The complaints spurred an inquiry by school officials, according to an email by Chuck Smith, a personnel investigator for the School District.

When reached by phone for comments about the accusations aimed at him, Strickland declined and referred all questions to his superiors. Lineberger and Kathleen High School Principal Cecil McClellan Jr. did not return phone calls.

"It is my understanding that the investigation revealed Coach Strickland did pinch the student as described and that he did this with the intention of getting the student's attention while speaking to him about making sure he kept his grades up," Smith wrote.

Robinson said the second time Strickland pinched him, the twisting lasted between 15 and 20 seconds.

"When I got home, it was all bruised up," he said. "I tried to take a shower and it just started burning."

Strickland later apologized to the student for his actions and conceded they were inappropriate, Smith wrote. The principal also issued a written reprimand to Strickland in early December, records show.

"I believe Mr. McClellan and Mr. Lineberger felt that the parent of the student was satisfied with this outcome," he wrote.

Not so.

In a Thursday conversation with Dawson, the lawyer decried the twisting as an abuse of power.

"You cross a boundary anytime you strike or hit another person," he said, "and if you do it to a student and you are in a position of authority over the student."

The lawyer said he has acquired photos of the bruising, but doubts they conveyed the pain Robinson may have felt.

Robinson said other players on his team have also experienced nipple twisting at the hands of the coach, but those pinches did not produce as much bruising as he experienced.

Polk County Athletic Director Don Bridges said Thursday the public records request would likely go through Monday, once school staff had returned from the holiday break.

In Russia, a new badge of honor for Putin critics: a jail term (The Christian Science Monitor)

Moscow ? A prison stint in most countries is a disgrace to live down, but in Russia it can be a valuable asset, even a must, on the resume of anyone who aspires to lead an anti-Kremlin protest movement.

Russian security services have always been ready to oblige their worst opponents by tossing them into jail on almost any flimsy pretext, with little regard for legal niceties or human rights conventions.

A century ago most Bolshevik leaders spent time in Czarist prisons, a rite-of-passage that burnished their revolutionary credentials. The Soviet Union attracted the outrage of the world for its treatment of dissidents such as Anatoly Sharansky, Vladimir Bukovsky, and Nobel Prize-winning physicist Andrei Sakharov.

Though the dissident movement was destroyed by KGB repression, most of its leaders forced to emigrate, Mr. Sakharov was ultimately released from his internal exile by reforming Communist leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Sakharov ended his days as a member of the first Soviet parliament and a celebrated symbol of national conscience.

IN PICTURES: Russians protest Putin's party

"This happens in repressive regimes, in which the government is seen as a force that's opposed to the people rather than a force that represents them," says Masha Lipman, editor of the Moscow Carnegie Center's Pro et Contra journal. "In today's Russia, Vladimir Putin's whole period of leadership has been about enforcing his dominance over society."

As a new protest movement swells the streets, Russian authorities, true to form, have been boosting the street cred of several opponents by jailing them for taking part in "unsanctioned" meetings, including former deputy prime minister Boris Nemtsov and radical blogger Alexei Navalny, who suggested Monday that he might be ready to challenge Vladimir Putin if there were fair elections.

"When we get a chance to take part in elections, I am ready to fight for leading positions, including in the presidential vote," Mr. Navalny told journalists.

But the most dramatic case may be that of Sergei Udaltsov, a veteran left-wing street activist who's been arrested more than 100 times in the past five years. He was preemptively jailed on Dec. 4 on a variety of pretexts that seem so outrageous he has begun to attract support far beyond his own small, radical left-wing constituency.

Almost 2,000 people, including many liberals who've only recently learned Mr. Udaltsov's name, have signed a Facebook pledge to attend an unsanctioned rally Thursday in Moscow's downtown Pushkin Square to accuse the Russian authorities of holding Udaltsov as a political prisoner and demand that he be released.

"Udaltsov's arrests look like nothing more than a witch hunt," says Yevgeny Ikhlov, an expert with the Moscow-based grassroots movement For Human Rights. "There has been a whole chain of completely fabricated cases against him. There is no doubt that he's being held to keep him out of the protest movement and to prevent him from putting himself forward as a candidate in the coming presidential election."

Udaltsov was picked up for "jaywalking" on the morning of Dec. 4, Duma election day. When his five-day prison term expired, he was immediately rearrested on charges of disobeying police officers during a previous arrest in October. When he went on a hunger strike, he was hospitalized under heavy police guard. On Tuesday, a Moscow judge postponed his appeal for ten days, requiring him to remain in custody during that time. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7, which is Christmas Day in Russia, suggesting that further postponement is likely.

"All this makes a total mockery of the law, of due legal procedure, and even common decency," says Violetta Volkova, one of Udaltsov's lawyers. "I've been practicing law a long time in Russia, and I know there are honest judges and there can be fair trials. But everything that's happening to Udaltsov seems to go by a different set of rules. I think this is only because they fear that he could be a strong opposition leader, so they are keeping him off the streets by any means possible."

Udaltsov, reached on his cell phone in a prison hospital Tuesday, says he believes himself completely innocent and hopes that public pressure will force the the authorities to change their decisions.

"They may not realize it, but our authorities are setting the stage for a revolutionary situation by their own behavior," Udaltsov says. "My case is intended as an object lesson to the others, to show how they will treat the most radical opposition leaders. They hope to split the opposition by instilling fear in some, making separate promises to others. They are masters of such games. But we should keep together. This all just goes to show that our state needs capital repairs, not just a few cosmetic changes."

Even Mikhail Prokhorov, the billionaire metals tycoon and owner of the New Jersey Nets basketball team who recently announced that he will run in the upcoming presidential election as a liberal alternative to Putin, says he will work to see that political prisoners such as former oil magnate Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Udaltsov are freed.

In a YouTube address to the Russian people posted Wednesday, Mr. Prokhorov said: "I take it as a personal tragedy that some of our citizens will be greeting the New Year in prison. I?m talking about Mikhail Khodorkovsky, Platon Lebedev, Sergei Udaltsov, and many other innocent prisoners.? I am especially sad that I cannot help them now. But when the time comes, I will help."

U.S. extradites woman suspected of Bosnia war crimes (Reuters)

SARAJEVO (Reuters) ? The United States on Tuesday extradited to Bosnia a Bosnian female ex-soldier suspected of murdering six Croatians in 1993 during a war that ripped the region apart, the prosecutor's office in Sarajevo said.

Rasema Handanovic, a 39-year-old Muslim, was detained upon her arrival in Bosnia.

She is suspected of taking part in the mass murder of Croatian civilians in Bosnia-Herzegovina in April 1993, when she was a member of the Bosnian army special unit known as "Zulfikar," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

More than 100,000 people were killed during the Bosnian war of 1992-95. Muslims and Croatians fought each other in 1993-94 even though they had entered the conflict as allies against the Bosnian Serbs.

"Rasema Handanovic is suspected of personally taking part in executing by firing squad three soldiers of the Croatian Defence Council who had surrendered and three civilians ... in the hamlet of Gaj, (in) the Trusina village," the statement said.

The attack on the Croatian village resulted in the deaths of 18 civilians and four soldiers. Several people were wounded, including two children.

Last week, a U.S. naturalized citizen, Edin Dzeko, was deported to Bosnia over his alleged participation in the crime.

The Bosnian war crimes court is currently trying six members of the "Zulfikar" unit for war crimes in Trusina, including the unit's commander, Zulfikar Alispago.

Handanovic is one of only a few females wanted for war crimes committed during the Bosnian conflict. One suspect, Azra Basic, is being detained in the United States awaiting extradition over war crimes against Serb detainees.

So far, the only woman to have been convicted over Bosnian war crimes is Biljana Plavsic, the former Bosnian Serb president who had been a member of the Bosnian Serb wartime leadership.

The Hague-based war crimes tribunal sentenced Plavsic to 11 years in jail in 2003 for persecution of Bosnian Muslims and Croatians and crimes against humanity. She was released after serving two-thirds of her sentence and now lives in Belgrade.

Mom And Baby Held Captive, Rescued After Facebook Status Update

This is the second time in one week that I?m saying this, but thank god for Facebook! Last week, a Chicago man was arrested for child abuse after posting a photo of his young daughter bound and gagged. And now a Utah woman used the social networking site to send a distress signal after she and her 17-month-old son were held hostage for nearly five days.

Hiding in a closet with a laptop, the woman signed into Facebook and updated her status to say that she and her son would be ?dead by morning? if they were not rescued, reports The Associated Press. The post prompted someone to call police, who went to check on the woman and her child.

Officers found the woman at her ex-boyfriend?s home and, when asked if she was okay, she simply shook her head ?no.? The ordeal led to the arrest of 33-year-old Troy Reed Critchfield, who was charged with aggravated kidnapping, forcible sodomy, aggravated assault, domestic violence, child abuse and animal cruelty.

According to AP, the woman told police that she and her son had not been allowed to leave the home (she claims to have been physically assaulted any time she headed to a door). She said she had repeatedly been hit, choked and sexually abused for close to five days, and that Critchfield had also grabbed her son?s arms and treated him roughly.

As of Monday, Critchfield remained in the Salt Lake City County jail without bail. In 2010, he was convicted of a felony-level assault against the same woman and in February of this year, a judge ordered him to serve 120 days in jail and three years probation, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Luckily this woman was able to hide in the closet and access Facebook. I imagine it?s not the first thing anyone thinks of when in a life-threatening situation, but with no phone ? Critchfield had allegedly taken it away from her ? there were few options. It was smart thinking on her part, and I?m just so grateful that someone took her plea for help seriously. I would hate to think of the alternative.

Lower Indian house passes anti-graft bill (AP)

NEW DELHI ? The powerful lower house of India's Parliament passed a contentious anti-corruption bill Tuesday after hours of fierce debate even as a protest leader began a three-day hunger strike demanding Parliament adopt his tougher proposals.

The "Lokpal" or watchdog bill was passed after several amendments suggested by opposition lawmakers. The bill now must be passed by the upper house and signed by the president before it comes into effect.

"Let us pass this bill because the people are waiting for us," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at the end of an impassioned speech.

The bill was passed by voice vote by a majority of the members present. The lawmakers, however, rejected a portion of the bill that aimed to amend the constitution and make the watchdog a constitutional body because the government wasn't able to garner the support of two-thirds of the members voting.

The legislative showdown is the culmination of months of angry political debate and public protests that brought tens of thousands of middle-class Indians fed up with rampant corruption into the streets and put a government battered by scandals deeper on the defensive.

Hoping to defuse activist Anna Hazare's anti-corruption crusade, the government initiated debate Tuesday on a bill to create an anti-graft watchdog. But that failed to satisfy Hazare, who began his fast in India's business capital, Mumbai, demanding the proposed ombudsman be made more powerful.

After close to six hours of debate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rose to defend the government's bill, saying that the powers of the proposed watchdog needed to have checks in place.

"Let us not create something that will destroy all that we cherish all in the name of combating corruption," he said.

"I urge all my colleagues in Parliament to rise to the occasion and look beyond politics to pass this law," Singh said.

Hazare has called the government's anti-graft legislation an attempt to fool the country.

Hazare's main complaint with the anti-graft bill before Parliament is that the proposed corruption ombudsman would not have authority over the country's top investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation. He says the ombudsman position would be too weak without that authority.

In New Delhi, India's Parliament began its debate with the government saying that the legislation maintained the "fine balance" between the powers of the legislature, the judiciary and the executive branch.

Sushma Swaraj, the leader of the main opposition, right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, however, said that as the country waited for a "strong and effective" anti-corruption watchdog, the government was offering a bill that was "so full of holes and flaws that it has disappointed all of us."

Swaraj's party has thrown its weight behind Hazare's protest.

The legislation covers senior politicians and officials. The prime minister's office is under its purview, but with restrictions. But it gives the ombudsman no powers to conduct independent investigations into complaints of graft.

Hazare has fasted three times already. He started with a five-day fast in April, after which the government invited members of his team to help draft the legislation.

In the end the bill that was passed by the lower house kept the CBI free from the control of the watchdog. The changes that the government accepted included Swaraj's demand that the provisions of the anti-corruption law not be binding on state governments, who should be free to enact their own anti-corruption legislation.

Eight hours were set aside for the debate in Parliament's lower house on Tuesday but the debate lasted close to 11 hours. The upper house is set to debate and likely pass the legislation on Wednesday.

At the Mumbai fairground where he is fasting, Hazare told supporters earlier in the day that the proposed bill was a "fraud perpetuated upon the people by the government" and that they would teach lawmakers a lesson.

He said his supporters would travel across the country to campaign against all those political parties who did not support his version of the bill.

He has also asked his supporters to court arrest after he ends his fast on Dec. 29.

Hazare, who claims inspiration from Mohandas K. Gandhi, has called his protest against corruption India's second freedom struggle and has fasted three times already to garner support for his demands.

Thousands of people, many waving Indian flags and wearing the trademark white cap made popular by first independence leader Gandhi and now Hazare, gathered in support. As of Tuesday afternoon, the crowd was thinner than the tens of thousands Hazare drew to an August protest in the Indian capital.

Hazare is not without critics who say his populist campaign attempts to vilify all politicians and hold elected officials hostage.

Dozens of those critics also came out on the streets Tuesday, waving black flags and shouting slogans as Hazare's motorcade passed through the city.

Doctors were monitoring Hazare's health and said that he was running a fever and his blood pressure was high. News reports said that ambulances were waiting on standby near the fairground.

Arvind Kejriwal, a key Hazare aide, said that his supporters had been asking him to break his fast and take medication but until late Tuesday he had refused to do so.

Football Daily Dose: Turner the Decliner

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Remember when Michael Turner was known as ?The Burner?? That?s almost comical now.

At age 29, Turner is a shell of himself. He?s slow in the open field, can?t cut quick enough and almost always gets taken down by the first defender. Frankly, Turner appears chubby. Tack that on to his annual issue of catching no passes and coming off the field on all third-down plays, and what we have is a typical aging running back situation.

Turner isn?t going to turn his career path around at this point. He?s about to go over 300 carries for the third time in four seasons and his offense will only get better through the air. The artist formerly known as the Burner will be on all my ?do not draft? lists once again next year. In fact, he?ll be on my ?never draft again? list.

Here are some others running backs on that list as we begin to look to 2012:
* LeGarrette Blount - Runs to contact, can?t catch passes, has fumbling problem and doesn?t play on third downs or when his team is behind.

* Frank Gore - Will be 29 in May, asked to be an exclusive blocker in the pass offense now and quarterback?s limitations creates stacked boxes.

* Maurice Jones-Drew - His unbelievable 2011 campaign defies all logic. He came into the year with a knee injury, plays with the worst passing offense in football, sees eight men in box on every play and is still the league?s leading rusher. The price tag will not be worth the risk going forward. MJD is over 330 touches for the third straight season.

BREES SETS THE RECORD
With a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darren Sproles in the fourth quarter Monday night, Drew Brees set the NFL record for most passing yards in a single season. He passed Dan Marino?s mark of 5,084 yards, set in 1984.

Here?s a crazy thing to think about on Brees: He?s averaging 339.1 passing yards per game this season and has thrown 41 touchdowns. But he?s still fantasy?s No. 3 quarterback, well behind Aaron Rodgers and just back of Cam Newton.

FALCONS at SAINTS RANDOM THOUGHTS
Lance Moore aggravated his hamstring injury in the second quarter and called it a night. ? Love the way Julio Jones is willing to go over the middle. He?s explosive and will be better than Roddy White next year. ? I don?t know how Tony Gonzalez keeps doing it, but I wouldn?t bet on him doing it again next year. ? The Saints figure to be playing to win next week. If they win and the Rams somehow beat the Niners, the Saints will get a first-round bye.

INJURY QUICK SLANTS: QUARTERBACKS, WIDE RECEIVERS AND TIGHT ENDS ?
Tony Romo (hand) is going to be fine. ? Andre Johnson (hamstring) plans on playing in Week 17. ? Mario Manningham (knee) is questionable for Sunday night?s showdown with the Cowboys. ? Jake Ballard (knee) admitted he wouldn?t be able to play if the game was Monday. ? Anthony Fasano (concussion) still hasn?t been cleared.
?
INJURY CHART QUICK SLANTS: RUNNING BACKS
Kevin Smith (ankle) appears likely to rest in Week 17. ? Chris Johnson (ankle) took an injection to play in Week 16 and figures to do the same Week 17. ? James Starks aggravated his ankle. He?ll sit in the season finale. ? LeSean McCoy (ankle) is in doubt for the finale.

DEPTH CHART QUICK SLANTS? ?
The Lions are expected to play to win in Week 17. They don?t want to go to New Orleans in the first round. ? The Lions signed Joique Bell, who would serve as an emergency back if Kevin Smith (ankle) sits Sunday. ? Adrian Peterson is a good bet to start the 2012 season on the PUP list after testing revealed ACL, MCL, medial and lateral meniscus damage. ? Brandon Saine could be the Packers? featured back in Week 17 with the Packers resting players. ? Stevan Ridley has led the Patriots in carries for two straight weeks. ?

WAIVERS
DEFENSIVE SPOT STARTS
Adding a different defense/special teams each week based on matchups is a fine strategy. Here are units that might be on waivers to consider this week for streaming purposes:

1. BRONCOS vs. Chiefs - It?s do-or-die time for the Broncos, who get their old friend Kyle Orton at Mile High. Denver figures to play very aggressively in this one. ?

2. TITANS at Texans - Houston is locked into the No. 3 seed. They figure to rest most of their plays while the Titans need a win to keep their hopes alive.

3. FALCONS vs. Bucs - The Bucs gave up on their season about a month ago. Going through the motions against this Atlanta defense isn?t going to cut it.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank (AP)

LONDON ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.

Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.

"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the `A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.

Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.

"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think `Why me?' I am not rich."

But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.

Stratfor said in an email to members, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers, that it had hired a "leading identity theft protection and monitoring service" on behalf of the Stratfor members affected by the attack. The company said it will send another email on services for affected members by Wednesday.

Stratfor acknowledged that an "unauthorized party" had revealed personal information and credit card data of some of its members.

The company had sent another email to subscribers earlier in the day saying it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

5Rest assured.
By bobby morrow
This is a fantastic deluxe edition featuring all the 'Break Out' you'll ever need. Both the '83 and '84 versions of the album, loads of extended mixes and single releases, it's a total blast. It's remastered perfectly. There's no compression, just fresh, natural sound.

Even the packaging is lovely. 'Break Out' comes in a six panel digipak sleeve containing a 24 page booklet with loads of great photos from the time and a comprehensive essay on the making of the album featuring interviews with Richard Perry and the surviving Pointers amongst others.

Short of including a DVD (and possibly the lyrics), I don't see how this release could be any better. It's been a long time coming but at last you can obtain the definitive edition of this long-cherished album.

5more complete than we could have expected
By Daniel W. Kelly
Now this is how you do a deluxe edition. It's really all here. Breakout was released twice--the second time round, they replaced the song "Night line" with the newly extended remix of "I'm So Excited", a 1982 song that climbed higher on the charts as a result of its 1984 re-release. For years, "Night Line" became the forgotten Breakout track--until now. You get BOTH versions of the album as well as all the fantastic 12" mixes and even the single edits. Sure, it's a little odd that numerous songs are repeated in the same album version on both discs, but hey, as long as they don't leave anything crucial out from this album's success, I won't complain. But if I have one regret here--and it's not the fault of this release--is that the awesome 12" mix of Baby Come and Get It leaves out the totally awesome line "I think I'll take a bubble bath". WHY??? WHY??????

5Far *Exceeded* My Expectations! BBR Does It Again!
By Alex Honda
I cannot praise Big Break Records (BBR) enough for their exquisite attention to detail and the loving care that they give to their reissues (Never Can Say Goodbye [Expanded Edition], Odyssey, Special Things, Hot Together (Expanded), Contact to name a few) and BREAK OUT DELUXE EXPANDED EDITION 2 CD set from the Pointer Sisters' monster 1984 hit record is no exception.

When I first heard hints that BBR had BREAK OUT on their list of reissues, I was over-joyed. This was my favorite Pointer Sisters album when I was a pre-teen, literally piquing my interest in pop/r&b/rock music, and I have owned it on cassette, record, and CD. I thought that at most, the reissue would include the original album, plus the 12-inch singles that were previously released on The Pointer Sisters - Greatest Hits. In fact, I would've been happy with just a remastered copy and a few extra-tracks!

But Big Break Records went above and beyond what would've made us fans happy, and produced a stellar 2-CD set that features not only the 12-inch extended versions of the hit singles like "Jump (For My Love)," "Automatic," "I'm So Excited," and "Neutron Dance," among others, it also includes alternate versions of the songs, and the 1983 release of BREAK OUT, with the song "Nightline," and the 1984 re-release -- the one I had -- that replaced "Nightline" with "I'm So Excited." I didn't even know there were two different versions of the album.

For those unfamiliar with BREAK OUT or THE POINTER SISTERS, this album was a huge hit for them in the 80s and spawned 4 top ten hits in the USA and garnered them a new generation of fans like myself. Every track on the album was fantastic and the album was solid throughout. It had a dance/electro pop feel (that was very popular in the 80s), almost bordering on new wave, but it never went too far into that 80's synth sound, and it doesn't sound dated listening to it today. Each song is likable, whether a ballad (though there are only two of those) or uptempo dance tunes, and that's really in part to the remarkable talent and sound of Ruth, June, and Anita. And each sister gets to handle lead vocals throughout so there's a wonderful mix here.

The 2-CD set comes housed in fold out box with album cover art reproduced and a booklet. The booklet has an introduction by famed music producer Richard Perry who produced this album and was responsible for marrying the Pointer Sisters' halleluiah-church-like vocals with a hard rock beat on their first pairing with 1978's Energy (not that they needed any help since the Pointers were fully adept to sing almost any type of music from jazz to rock to country to Broadway show tunes to funk). And there's also extensive liner notes by the associate producer on this reissue, writer Christian John Wikane. Both were written in June 2011, and the booklet contains song credits, discography (chart) positions, and color pictures from the BREAK OUT photo shoot and the covers of the singles from various places. The lyrics aren't included, but I'm sure you can find them on the net.

Needless to say, the remastering is fabulous and breathes new life into this classic album. The bass is punchy, the treble is clear, and it sounds as though these songs were recorded yesterday. It's not just louder it's alive with sound! Even on my computer speakers the sound separation is remarkable, sounding as though I'm in the recording booth with them.

If you're a fan of the Pointer Sisters then you should definitely pick this one up. There's enough new stuff here that even if you own the older release of "Break Out" on CD this new BBR version is worth the investment.

And a special shout-out to BREAK OUT's reissue producer, Wayne A. Dickson! Without whom many of these classics would've long been forgotten (but not to us fans).

Amazon may benefit as digital goods sales jump (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Digital goods are the fastest-growing category online this holiday, led by e-books, suggesting Amazon.com Inc's strategy of blanketing the world with cheap e-readers and tablet computers may be producing some early gains.

Sales of digital goods, which also include music and videos, are up about 30 percent this holiday season, compared to the same period last year, according to comScore data.

That is ahead of sales of consumer electronics and jewelry and watches, which are up about 25 percent versus last year's holiday season, and apparel and accessories, which are growing in line with overall e-commerce at roughly 15 percent, comScore data show.

The only other holiday season that digital goods grew the fastest was in 2006, when sales jumped 83 percent from a smaller base, according to comScore. At that time, Apple Inc's iTunes music store drove a lot of the growth of the category.

"Music is a much more stable market at this point. The real new growth is coming from e-books," said Andrew Lipsman of comScore.

"The increased proliferation of devices, such as tablets and e-readers, has led to more forms of digital content being downloaded," he added. "People are downloading e-books in a way they had not previously."

Amazon launched its $199 Kindle Fire tablet ahead of the holidays and slashed prices on its range of Kindle e-readers.

Earlier this month, Amazon said customers were buying more than one million Kindles a week and analysts at Goldman Sachs estimate the company will sell 14 million units during the fourth quarter.

Amazon priced these products aggressively and many analysts estimate the company is making little or no profit on the devices. Instead, Amazon is hoping to make money from higher sales of digital goods, according to Aaron Kessler, an analyst at Raymond James.

"Tablets and Kindles are selling a lot this season and that should ultimately benefit Amazon's digital sales," he said.

A DIGITAL CHRISTMAS

Still, a lot of these devices were bought as gifts this holiday, so the full impact on digital content sales will probably not come until Christmas Day and the weeks that follow, Kessler added.

Indeed, the 30 percent growth rate of digital goods so far this holiday season will likely increase next week, comScore's Lipsman said.

Christmas Day is the heaviest day of the year for digital content sales and downloads. Last year, about $10 million was spent on this category on Christmas Day. The second busiest days were Dec 26 and Dec 27, according to comScore.

Spending on digital goods during the week between Christmas and New Year's last year was three times more than the average week in 2010, comScore data also show.

In the past, such spikes have been caused by people using new Apple iPods, iPads and iTunes gift cards to buy and download music, videos, apps and e-books, Lipsman said.

"We think it will be even bigger this year as more tablets and e-readers make it onto the market," he said. "I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon is a major beneficiary of this."

Historically, Christmas Day is the largest day for digital sales on Amazon.com, followed by Dec 26. Last year, from Christmas Eve through Dec 30, Amazon's digital content sales were over three times higher than the weekly average for 2010.

"With the introduction of Kindle Fire this season, millions more customers will be shopping for new digital content," said Craig Pape, director of music at Amazon.com.

Amazon is planning to run discounts on digital goods, including e-books, music, video, apps and games, on Christmas Day and the days that follow.

How to Build a Bamboo Bike

At the London Stanley Show of 1894, a new form of transportation showed up on the scene: bikes with bamboo frames. The manufacturer offered 12 models of these exotic two-wheelers but closed down five years later, never to be heard from again. Apparently squeezed out by steel-frame cycles, the fad never caught on despite owners' enthusiastic testimonials to the "pleasure" and "durability" recorded in the defunct company's sales catalog.

More than a century later, bamboo is back: A growing number of custom bicycle builders and hobbyists are reviving the craft. Not only are bamboo bicycles visually stunning, but they offer a smooth ride, owing to advantageous vibration characteristics, and provide a tensile (durability) strength greater than steel. So far it's a boutique resurgence, aimed at well-heeled bicycle enthusiasts willing to pay $3000 or more for an artisanal design. But this may soon change.

A team of sustainability researchers from Columbia University envisions bikes built of bamboo as a breakthrough tech for developing countries: Not only could these bikes withstand the wear and tear of rough roads, but building them could become a revitalizing industry that replaces cheap, low-quality imports with domestically built bikes. Moreover, bamboo grows without fertilizers, requires low levels of energy to produce, and is locally available in many parts of the developing world.

Business Model Innovation the Red Sox Way - Scott Anthony ...

Scott Anthony

Scott Anthony

Scott leads Innosight?s Asian operations. His fourth book on innovation, The Little Black Book of Innovation, will be released in early 2012. Follow him on Twitter at @ScottDAnthony.

We entered the EMC Club at Fenway Park on a crisp December evening, about 10 minutes before the scheduled start of Innosight's year-end party. We gaped like little kids at what John Updike memorably called a "lyrical little bandbox of a ballpark" illuminated with wreaths. Then we turned to the scoreboard and saw what seemed a 300-foot-tall sign saying, "Fenway Park welcomes Innosight" (they even had our new logo!).

Why am I writing about Innosight's holiday party? Because Fenway can show us some novel ways to grow a seemingly mature business.

When John Henry and Tom Werner led the purchase of the Red Sox in 2002, pundits believed they had to leave Fenway Park. After all, the tiny stadium built in 1912 lacked many modern amenities and had the second smallest seating capacity in the major leagues. It seemed to constrain the team's ability to generate sufficient revenues to compete against the team's hated rivals, the New York Yankees.

Hosting parties in December is just one example of how the ownership team has found innovative ways to increase the revenues it derives from Fenway. The stadium has hosted entertainers like Neil Diamond and Bruce Springsteen, and events such as the National Hockey League's Winter Classic. The Red Sox have added several new classes of seats, notably seats on top of the iconic 30-foot wall in left field ("the Green Monster"). They received approval from the city of Boston to close Yawkey Way to automobiles on game days, providing increased space for vendors. In dozens of little ways the owners have found ways to squeeze more growth out of the stadium. Of course, a track record of recent success, including two World Series titles (the one in 2004 ending a famous 86-year drought) and six trips to the playoffs in nine years hasn't hurt.

The ownership has introduced other business model innovations. The Red Sox were one of the first teams to invest in the local regional cable sports network, the New England Sports Network (the Red Sox owners control 80 percent of NESN). These networks have turned into significant revenue drivers. The Red Sox also created youth camps to build brand awareness among younger consumers.

Major league owners are famously reluctant to release franchise-specific financial information. However, Forbes estimates that the value of the Red Sox has climbed from about $500 million in 2002 to $900 million in 2011 ? an impressive 7% annual growth.

Companies seeking to revitalize seemingly stagnant businesses can take three lessons from the Red Sox success:

  1. Question orthodoxy. Of course you can't put people on top of the Green Monster. Or host a hockey game in Fenway. Or can you?
  2. Systematically evaluate business model options. A business model describes how an organization creates, captures, and delivers value. Consider all of the different levers at your disposal to create growth.
  3. Look to the peripheries. Cable broadcasting and fan clubs aren't obvious places to look for growth. Growth often comes from carefully examining the edges of your current business.

Just because a business is mature doesn't mean there isn't room for growth. If the Red Sox can find growth in an almost 100-year-old stadium, surely corporations can find growth in products and services that seem to have leveled off.

Brandstack Pulled From The Deadpool, Acquired By DesignCrowd

BrandsWhen design marketplace Brandstack was shuttered last month (with the founder blaming credit card fraud), we figured that was the end of the story. Little did I know things were about to go all M. Night Shyamalan with a last minute plot twist. DesignCrowd, an Australian design crowdsourcing platform that raised $3 million last month, has just announced that they've acquired Brandstack and will integrate it into their service (essentially rescuing Brandstack from the deadpool.)

Russian oil platform capsizes; 4 dead, 49 missing (AP)

MOSCOW ? An oil drilling platform capsized and later sank amid fierce storms off Russia's east coast Sunday, plunging dozens of workers into the churning, icy waters. Four were confirmed dead and 49 were missing.

The Transportation Ministry said the Kolskaya platform started sinking after a strong wave broke some of its equipment and the portholes in the crew's dining room. One 5-meter (16-foot) wave washed away the platform's lifeboats, leaving the crew with no escape.

The Emergencies Ministry said in a statement Sunday 67 people had been aboard the platform as it was being towed about 200 kilometers (120 miles) off the coast of Sakhalin Island.

Fourteen people were rescued from the sea by the ship that had been towing the platform, but further rescue efforts were being hampered by the severe weather conditions, officials said.

A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry in the Far East, told the Associated Press that the rescue team had spotted four lifeless bodies in the water, but had not yet been able to retrieve them.

The Kolskaya was built in Finland in 1985 and is owned by Russian offshore exploration firm Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka. It sank several hours after it capsized, officials said.

There were no immediate reports of environmental damage, and that would be unlikely since the platform was not drilling for oil when it capsized and carried a negligible amount of fuel.

The Investigative Committee on Sunday opened a probe into the accident and said that it might have happened because of a breach of safety regulations or due to the weather conditions.

As oil and gas fields in Eastern Siberia are becoming depleted, Russian oil and gas companies are starting to shift their focus to offshore projects, unveiling ambitious plans to tap the riches of the Arctic.

Earlier this year, Exxon Mobil and Russia's largest oil producer Rosneft teamed up to jointly explore oil and gas fields in the Kara Sea with Exxon pledging $3.2 billion of investment on only three fields.

Alexei Knizhnikov, an energy policy official in Russia for the World Wildlife Fund, told the RIA Novosti news agency that energy companies ought to learn from Sunday's accident.

"This disaster should highlight the high risks of offshore projects," he said. "It's very difficult to conduct efficient rescue operations, whether it's rescuing people or dealing with oil spills, in the weather conditions of the Arctic."
